Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1291530LOL. had instant mental picture of cow sitting on a bed in an efficiency apartment, and some poor sap trying to make cheese. |

I though I needed a yogurt machine, but I just surrounded my yogurt with bottles with warm water in a cooler and stuffed the rest with dishtowels...I assume you can use one of those rice filled neck warming things too, or something similar. If you want to learn how to make it, just do a google. Kefir and Filmjolk are also very nice, easy nice things to make out of milk...that you can do at home. It does suck about the irradiation...really sucks. Especially when you have little ones... I've got some dried milk because it was cheaper, but that's not going to last forever.... |

Hubby and I canned butter a few years ago. I think we will do it again with all that is going on. The canned butter is just wonderful and has an extraordinary flavor. Given a choice, everyone in the household would eat the canned butter over fresh because it was so delicious. I know that sounds somewhat ridiculous, but it is the truth. Courage forges a path through all obstacles, while fear is the obstruction of all dreams. If anybody is a painter, the first part of the cheese vid is the beginning of how you make Casein medium. Milk, add vinegar and heat, remove curd, neutralize the remaining acid in the curd with a very small amount of baking soda solution, then press and strain and dissolve the curd into ammonia over heat. Continue to heat this mixture to drive off the ammonia and you end up with a casein paint medium. Basically semi transparent milk glue, similar to Elmers without the additives. Had no idea how hard that endeavor would be. Seems no body wants to get rid of their dairy cows these days...should be no surprise given the price of milk in the stores. Quoting: ^Watcher^Speaking of cows, I ran across this recently. We have the wrong cows in the USA. If you are going to buy a cow you might want to read this. It’s quite interesting: “The trouble is that we have “the wrong kind of cows”. It seems the black and white cows — Holsteins and Friesians — generally give milk that contains a small but significant amount of beta-casein type A1, which behaves like an opiate and which epidemiological studies have implicated in heart disease, Type 1 diabetes, autism and schizophrenia. This is big news, folks. Heart disease is the leading cause of death. This is like cigarettes and cancer. Dr. Thomas Cowan, co-founder of the Weston A. Price Foundation has published this fascinating introduction to the subject in his email newsletter:” [link to thebovine.wordpress.com] Courage forges a path through all obstacles, while fear is the obstruction of all dreams. The only way that anyone gets something for nothing, is that someone else has given up something for nothing. |

It was easy to make and tasted so much fresher than store bought. Then I found out the little buggers were trading their "natural" lunches at school to those that never got anything but processed junk. That ended the butter and bread making, lol. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 287857 United States 04/14/2011 04:29 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It is easy-the radiation free dairy will be rather challenging-it will worsen and the effects will become more pronounced as time goes forward... Making your own horseradish is also easy-shred the root, some vinegar and some salt...can add sour cream or plain yogurt for sauce For mustard, you can buy mustard powder then add a bit of water when you want mustard, this includes the really hot Chinese mustard De hydrate and one can also buy frozen and can it for longer storage-do it correctly!!! Jerky can be made now...learning how to season meats-as even with radiation not everyone will become vegetarian... Soups can be made in large quantity and then canned correctly for long storage...and it gives one fluids as well... Back to basics and plant some heirloom herbs here and there-onions, scallions, leeks, etc are very good Heirloom fruit plants or trees... Mint Mustard Thyme Chamomille Stevia Lemon Balm dill parsley(lots of iron) basil Oregano tarragon and rosemary are great to disinfect as well as flavoring food Even the marrow of the cat tails growing in marshy areas can be eaten-it does not have much flavor...and not packed with nutrition but worth considering what one can safely ingest-dandelions are very nutritious learn how to cook under ground...in leaves(safe leaves) and figure out what you can eat even if not ideal...sap from maple...bark of certain trees or can be boiled making teas or infusions. Learn about poultice application-with mustard or other herbs... Tea Tree Oil is great to have on hand...pine needles can also be used to boil and make a tea, then throwing the needles out Terpens are actually quite good for the body- all kinds of stuff, inform yourself-and be wise in all ways Take care-be good to one another-as all character IS BEING EXAMINED in all ways Do not betray the truth-for it will not serve anyone-so it shall be seen- |

Never knew you could can butter. How long does it keep? One of my biggest regrets in life is that I didn't get my grandmother to teach me how to can. I did not grow up learning to can. I taught myself a couple of years ago by buying the "Ball Canning Book" (can find this a grocery store magazine racks) and watching YouTube videos like the one's I have posted here. It's not too late to learn. Teaching yourself now can mean the difference between starving and living. I bought 10 lbs. of carrots and 20 lbs. of potatoes that I am canning today. Take advantage of the food at the stores while they have food and learn on that until you can grow your own. |
