Seems we have calmed down for the moment thank goodness...watching Japan

ALASKA VOLCANO OBSERVATORY DAILY UPDATE
Thursday, September 5, 2013 11:25 AM AKDT (Thursday, September 5, 2013 19:25 UTC)

VENIAMINOF VOLCANO (CAVW #1102-07-)
56°11'52" N 159°23'35" W, Summit Elevation 8225 ft (2507 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: WATCH
Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

Continuous seismic tremor continues. The level of seismicity is lower than observed August 30 to September 2. Low-level ash emission from the active intracaldera cone is likely occurring, though the view from the FAA webcam in Perryville is obscured by clouds today. Elevated surface temperatures have been detected over the past 24 hours in satellite images, consistent with lava effusion.

Ash fall from current activity is not expected to be significant and likely will be less than 1/16 inch, although areas within a few miles of the active cone could receive thicker amounts of ash fall. Information about volcanic ash and its potential effects can be found on the AVO web page (www.avo.alaska.edu).

NASA’s Deep Impact spacecraft is spinning out of control
NASA’s Deep Impact spacecraft is in deep trouble. The craft, famous for blasting a projectile into the Comet Tempel 1 in 2005, lost contact with Earth sometime between 11 August and 14 August. Recent commands to put the craft in hibernation, or safe mode, were unsuccessful and Deep Impact is now spinning out of control, says principal investigator Michael A’Hearn of the University of Maryland in College Park. The mission was renamed Epoxi when it was extended to observe comets and stars with transiting exoplanets.

Engineers have traced the problem to a software communications glitch that reset the craft’s computer. They are now working on commands that could bring Deep Impact back in operation. They may try to communicate with the spacecraft this weekend, but the team first has to figure out its most likely orientation and whether to broadcast signals to the vehicle’s high-gain or low-gain antenna.

Mission scientists are racing against the clock because the craft’s batteries rely on power provided by Deep Impact’s solar panels. If the panels on the wayward craft happen to be pointing in a direction where they receive partial sunlight, the batteries could last for a few months. But if the panels are pointed away from the Sun, the batteries would die in just a few days. Once the batteries are gone, Deep Impact can no longer be revived, A’Hearn says.

One casualty of the mishap is that scientists have not received any of the expected image the craft was scheduled to take in August of Comet ISON, the icy space rock that could make a spectacle in the inner Solar System this fall before diving into the Sun, A’Hearn says.

New science proves turmeric does what chemotherapy can’t: Kill multiple myeloma cells
In a laboratory, preclinical study recently published by the journal Organic & Biomolecular Chemistry, Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Cancer Center researchers combined structural features from anti-nausea drug thalidomide with common kitchen spice turmeric to create hybrid molecules that effectively kill multiple myeloma cells.

Thalidomide was first introduced in the 1950s as an anti-nausea medication to help control morning sickness, but was later taken off the shelves in 1962 because it was found to cause birth defects. In the late 1990's the drug was re-introduced as a stand-alone or combination treatment for multiple myeloma. Turmeric, an ancient spice grown in India and other tropical regions of Asia, has a long history of use in herbal remedies and has recently been studied as a means to prevent and treat cancer, arthritis and Alzheimer's disease. According to the American Cancer Society, laboratory studies have shown that curcumin, an active ingredient in turmeric, interferes with several important molecular pathways and inhibits the formation of cancer-causing enzymes in rodents.

"Although thalidomide disturbs the microenvironment of tumor cells in bone marrow, it disintegrates in the body. Curcumin, also active against cancers, is limited by its poor water solubility. But the combination of thalidomide and curcumin in the hybrid molecules enhances both the cytotoxicity and solubility," says the study's lead researcher Shijun Zhang, assistant professor in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry at the VCU School of Pharmacy.

Weird would be an understatement but here goes......I'm sitting on my patio, smoking & reading GLP, seeing occasional lightning strikes, off in the distance when a huge, single, fast, flash(like someone took a pic with an old Polaroid camera) lit up the sky. Not strange but about 5 seconds later the thunder starts & it had a weird, tinny, metallic quality to it, like it happened in a metal shed or something. Very strange indeed.

New Hampshire hospital contacts 8 patients who may have been exposed to deadly, rare brain disease

Officials believe the extremely rare disease caused the August death of a patient who had brain surgery at the hospital in May, and they say there's a remote chance it was transmitted to other brain surgery patients because the abnormal proteins that cause the disease can survive standard sterilization practices.

In addition to the eight Catholic Medical Center patients, up to five more in other states also may have been exposed because some of the surgical instruments were rented and passed on to other hospitals.

Karangetang volcano (Siau Island, Indonesia): incandescent lava at summit, alert raised:
September 5, 2013..
A new eruption could be underway at the volcano. VSI raised the alert to 3 (Siaga, alert) on a scale of 1-4, following the observation of incandescent lava at the summit and glowing rockfalls on the eastern side into the Batuawang ravine. Strong degassing generates a plume rising up to 500 m. Satellite images show a hotspot at the summit as well. These observations suggest that new magma has been arriving at the summit where mild strombolian activity is taking place. If this activity increases, the occurrence of dangerous pyroclastic flows is a likely scenario, similar to what happened at Fuego volcano in Guatemala a few days ago.
