I know this is negative but it's tough to see the silver lining in this right now. Its “child,” growing five yards (meters) a year, is now 1,320 feet (400 meters) tall and popular among hikers. The mountain’s alert level was raised to the second-highest level last week after the number of volcanic tremors soared from 200 a day to 7,200. A powerful burst could shoot incandescent rocks down its slopes and far into the ocean. Volcano ash still clouds life for some in Argentina - In Villa La Angostura, in Patagonia in southern Argentina, on an almost daily basis, volcanic ash has been falling on the town since the Puyehue volcano in neighbouring Chile erupted in June. Busy September for Costa Rican volcanoes - We tend to talk about three volcanoes in Costa Rica: the ever-active Arenal, the renewed Turrialba and Poás. Now we can add another volcano to the watch list, that being Rincón de la Vieja. Like the other Costa Rican volcanoes, it is a composite volcano with overlapping craters at its summit. It is a hulk of a volcano with a total volume of over 130 km3 |

It separates the Eurasian Plate and North American Plate in the North Atlantic, and the African Plate from the South American Plate in the South Atlantic. The Ridge extends from a junction with the Gakkel Ridge (Mid-Arctic Ridge) northeast of Greenland southward to the Bouvet Triple Junction in the South Atlantic. Although the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is mostly an underwater feature, portions of it have enough elevation to extend above sea level. The section of the ridge which includes the island of Iceland is also known as the Reykjanes Ridge. The average spreading rate for the ridge is about 2.5 cm per year. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge includes a deep rift valley which runs along the axis of the ridge along nearly its entire length. This rift marks the actual boundary between adjacent tectonic plates, where magma from the mantle reaches the seafloor, erupting as lava and producing new crustal material for the plates. Gabe, a quick question from this layman. It seems as if, and as you are indicating, there is a significant build up in magma both inland and undersea. Would it be less of an impact on the planet (and it's inhabitants) if the pressure release occurred under the ocean rather than on land, or would it destroy enough sea life that this too would be catastrophic, of course dependent on the intensity of such a release ? |

This is quite a feat given that we are in the tail end of the monsoon season, when clouds are abundant in this area. The news reports and photos from the site have suggested multiple landslide occurrence in the earthquake, so of course an image is a good way to look at this. Gabriel (OP) User ID: 2601857 United States 10/06/2011 06:55 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Iceland's massive volcano Katla appears on the brink of a major eruption just days after officials confirmed that over the summer they had detected the start of eruptions. Measuring devices Wednesday morning picked up a large earthquake swarm, usually a tell-tale sign of a potential volcanic eruption. The intense swarm of earthquakes started at midnight and dozens of tremors were been recorded - the strongest with a magnitude of 4.1 at around 3am. The Icelandic Government last month announced it was increasing the monitoring Katla, which is one of Europe's most feared volcanoes, following a consistent and strengthening spike of tremors and quakes. And last week, officials at the Iceland Meteorological Office confirmed a series of smaller eruptions had occurred in July. They said the high seismic tremors recorded on July 8 and 9 confirmed Katla had become active and had started small eruptions. Evidence gathered by geophysicists showed the magma had risen to the height of the glacier ice above the volcano causing it to melt. It is believed that four eruptions that have taken place in the last fifteen years, are the beginning of an active period, during which major eruptions may be expected every two to seven years. Data provided by the Icelandic Meteorological Office confirms seismic activity has been increasing in the region in recent years, indicating the entry of magma. According to the report, the Hekla volcano is expected to erupt in the near future and an eruption in Katla is also impending. Katla, which has not experienced a significant eruption for 93 years, is the second largest volcano on Iceland and its eruption will be felt across Europe. Last year, the country's president warned "the time for Katla to erupt is coming close, Iceland has prepared and it is high time for European governments and airline authorities all over Europe and the world to start planning for the eventual Katla eruption". Katla is much larger than its neighbouring Eyjafjallajokull – which erupted last year - with a magma chamber about 10 times the size. Volcanologists warn that if Katla does erupt, the combination of the magma and the large ice sheet covering the volcano could lead to explosive activity and an ash plume for weeks, if not months. |
