CBS News: Giant Louisiana sinkhole could continue to grow for years to come - CBS News Leads Sunday Morning Broadcast with Sinkhole Lead- Sinkholes:The hole truth (VIDEO)
[link to www.cbsnews.com]

Officials: “Marked uptick in microquakes in past day” around giant sinkhole — Alert raised to Code 3
The Office of Conservation, in consultation with Assumption Parish Incident Command, is advising the public that the Oxy 3/sinkhole monitoring alert status has been raised to Code 3 – requiring all work directly on the sinkhole, Oxy 3 pad and within the containment berm to cease until further notice. Seismic monitoring had detected a sustained increase in the trend of micro-earthquake (MEQ) activity in the area around the sinkhole and Oxy 3 over the past week, and a marked uptick in MEQs in the past day. This pattern of MEQ increase has been identified as an indicator of likely shifting and sloughing in the sinkhole and the area below it, based on past observations. The seismic activity is limited to the Oxy 3/sinkhole area, showing no indication of impact to the Oxy 1 area. Monitoring is constantly ongoing in the area and Conservation will advise the public of significant changes in subsurface conditions.

Hey, AK! Thanks for the info. I didn't see this so will try to check it out later.
Wanted to tell you guys that on the History Channel's "Swamp People" series the last episode was about the sinkhole. Had some very scary footage of just how much that thing is really bubbling. Troy Landry and his crew hunt gators in that area and they had to get in and get the hell out as quickly as possible. In case you've never seen the program, it is a bit startling and maybe upsetting for people who aren't familiar with gator hunting. Down here it's a way of life. There have gotten to be so many gators, it has gotten to be a danger to the ecosystem, pets, children and folks in general. So there has to be a gator season to "thin the herd".
Check it out.

Love to all!

5/6/2013 — Idaho earthquakes continue — moved from Lava Hot Springs, ID to the Yellowstone magma chamber

On top of the 4.2M and 3.7M earthquakes at Lava Hot Springs, ID…. we’re now seeing movement in North Central Idaho…. directly above the magma chamber for the main Yellowstone Caldera.

Also, just north of Craters of the Moon, and Hell’s Half Acre volcanoes in Idaho.
More here with some eye opening graphics.

Re: F.O.G.
The US government has been running a quantum Internet for over two years
“The basic idea here is that the act of measuring a quantum object, such as a photon, always changes it. So any attempt to eavesdrop on a quantum message cannot fail to leave telltale signs of snooping that the receiver can detect.”

Makes sense, right? Well it’s much easier said than done and has been a desire of computer scientists and cryptologists since the early days of the Internet. A quantum Internet connection cannot be even remotely disturbed without raising a red flag, so data sent over such a network would be transmitted in the most secure form the digital age has ever seen.

“And these are literally completely secure,” wrote Dan Nosowitz for PopSci this week. “Any attempt to eavesdrop is necessarily obvious, because the mere act of eavesdropping physically changes the transmission.”

According to a revelation made by two scientists this week, the era of quantum Internet may finally be upon us.

The Tech Review blog announced on Monday that Richard Hughes and a team of researchers at Los Alamos National Labs in New Mexico have been running an “alternative quantum Internet,” and have been doing so for roughly two-and-a-half years. In a blog post the website broke down the basics of how Hughes and company created a system that works like a hub-and-spoke network in which all messages anywhere in the network get routed from a main node — a central hub.

“The idea is that messages to the hub rely on the usual level of quantum security. However, once at the hub, they are converted to conventional classical bits and then reconverted into quantum bits to be sent on the second leg of their journey,” announced the blog. “So as long as the hub is secure, then the network should also be secure.”

Solar science meets art: Solar storm heading for Earth!

ESA’s Space Science website released an unique portrait of a solar storm heading straight for Earth, based on data collected by the ESA/NASA SOHO space observatory during a coronal mass ejection. Imagery shows a huge cloud of magnetised plasma ejected from the Sun’s atmosphere and launched towards Earth.

The image shows an extreme-ultraviolet view of the solar disc superimposed on a wide-field view of the surrounding solar environment.

WMO dubbed last year as disturbing sign of climate change

The World Meteorological Organisation revealed in Statement on the Status of the Global Climate, that during the August to September 2012 melting season, the Arctic’s sea ice cover was just 3.4 million square kilometres (1.32 million square miles). That is equal to 18% less than record low set in 2007. Last year was the ninth warmest year since recorded history and the 27th consecutive year that the global land and ocean temperatures were above the 1961–1990 average.

Timelapse Video Captures a Year of Incredible Night Sky Views
This beautiful new timelapse video might have folks heading in droves for northern Michigan. Shawn Malone of Lake Superior Photo put together this incredible video — her first attempt at a timelapse compilation, believe it or not — using over 10,000 photo frames showing 33 different scenes of various night sky events from northern Michigan over the past year. “It took a year to shoot and a bit of tenacity and persistence to get this into a form of coherent electrified cosmic goodness,” Malone wrote on Vimeo. And did she ever capture cosmic goodness: auroras, the Milky Way rising and setting, meteor showers, a comet, and even aurora and lightning together in one scene. Just gorgeous….

Just trapped a raccoon, wow is it furious!! Very aggressive and trying to flip the cage over to make her escape. I bet she can do it, too, but I hope not. Its really going to be a chore to get them all, we think its 2 separate sets, one momma and 4 babies (about the size of puppies) and one who is preggers that is scratching in my attic. I had a squirrel get in the trap earlier, released it and now this mean and furious raccoon! No sleep for me tonight, not with all the racquet she is making. Wonder if they wear themselves out and stop with the prison break stuff after a while?

Be Careful TG they can be vicious and are very good at escaping also carry rabies. We had one for a pet someone found him by the road and he wound up at our house. He was so cute when he was little we fed him with a doll bottle. Then he got bigger and fat he would sleep under the stairs and you could hear him snoring. One morning we woke up to find flour and sugar from one end of the kitchen to the other he had opened all the canisters on the counter my mother wanted to kill him. He had grown huge one day he went outside into the woods and never came back guess it was time to find a girlfriend. How did so many get in your attic? You've got enough for a winter coat lol. Re: F.O.G.
A nuclear gauge containing radioactive materials went missing from a job site near Martinsburg last week, and the public's help in requested in finding it. According to a news release from Valley Quarries Inc. of Chambersburg, Pa., a Troxler Model 3430 moisture-density gauge went missing from a job site after an employee used it to take a reading at about 10:40 a.m. Friday. The worker then placed the gauge in the back of his pickup truck and traveled to another work site. Upon arriving at the second site, he discovered the truck's tailgate had opened and the gauge was missing. John Englerth, the company's radiation safety officer, said that an employee from another firm reported seeing someone stop along the route to pick up the gauge and drive off with it. According to the company's website, Valley Quarries is doing paving work on the Interstate 81 widening project north of the city. The missing gauge contains cesium-137 and americium-241. It takes measurements by projecting radiation from those sources into the ground, then displaying the amount of radiation reflected back to the gauge. The gauge has a plunger-type handle protruding from its top, and its rectangular base is yellow. Any attempt to tamper with the gauge in the device could result into the person trying to do so being exposed to unshielded radioactive sources, the company warns, which could result in potentially dangerous radiation exposure. The West Virginia Radiological Health Program Office has been notified about the loss of the gauge.

Wow!
Galaxy Cove Vista
Image Credit & Copyright: Rogelio Bernal Andreo (Deep Sky Colors)
Explanation: To see a vista like this takes patience, hiking, and a camera. Patience was needed in searching out just the right place and waiting for just the right time. A short hike was needed to reach this rugged perch above a secluded cove in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park in California, USA. And a camera was needed for the long exposure required to bring out the faint light from stars and nebula in the background Milky Way galaxy. Moonlight and a brief artificial flash illuminated the hidden beach and inlet behind nearby trees in the above composite image taken about two weeks ago. Usually obscured McWay Falls is visible just below the image center, while the Pacific Ocean is in view to its right.
