Space Storm Could Black Out US East Coast for Two Years
by Karin Zeitvogel for RIA Novosti
Washington DC (RIA Novosti) Jun 12, 2013

Severe space "weather" can knock out satellite communications and GPS systems, expose space tourists and astronauts to dangerous levels of radiation, and even cause massive blackouts on Earth that could last up to two years, scientists and NASA officials warned.

"The United States population that is at risk of an extended power outage from a Carrington-level storm is between 20-40 million, with an outage duration of possibly 16 days to one to two years," said Kathryn Sullivan, the first woman to walk in space and now the acting administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which hosted Tuesday's conference.

"The highest risk of storm-induced outages of these magnitudes in the United States is between Washington DC and New York City," she said, citing a report released last month by global insurance giant Lloyd's of London, which urged businesses to "think about their exposure to space weather."

So far record breaking heat is hitting many areas in Colorado. Winds are gusting 30-50mph. Humidity is only 5%. Guess what that means...yes you are right.

3 new wildfires have started and spreading in CO. If the wind doesn't start laying down for the night, almost 8pm here now and still windy, these fires will have spread big time by morning!!!
 Quoting: whiteangel

Today we broke 100. This is the earliest date for 100+ temps in history for the Denver area.

The fire at the Royal Gorge has burned structures on both sides of the bridge, unk until tomorrow if the bridge it's self was damaged. For those who have been there, the walk way is made out of wood!

The Black Forest fire just north of Colorado Springs is in the area of the large Waldo Canyon fire from last year. So far 10-12 homes have burned or been damaged with a higher total likely come daylight.

You can smell smoke when you go outside! Couldn't smell it earlier today.

I've been super busy but have been following this closely, you be carefull!!!!!!!!

Everyone in Iowa , Ill, hell most of the northeast, be carefull the squall line is just forming and this storm has massive energy behind it. Rotation in a big cell already heading toward northern Chicago.

[link to radar.weather.gov]

This line is now forming, pray for all those people in line of this thing, could be a 600 to 900 mile line with 60 to 90 mph winds.

I am fine. This is 80 miles south of me. It would have to plow through Denver to get to me. My fear is a fire that does hit Denver's foothills. That would be a huge mess.

Difference between the two cities - Colorado Springs in right up into the foothills. Heavily wooded and those trees are brittle dry. For those who know what a pine/fir tree feels like - imagine grabbing the end of a green looking branch and having all the needles crumble in your hands. That is why everything burns up so quickly. We are so dry here it doesn't take much at all for things to go up like paper.

Please be safe in your own mess Shad.

Oh this is really bad!!

WA as you know I live near the foothills, not as close as a few months ago however still very close.

I cannot see the foothills due to the thick smoke!

When I was driving home from work I was getting a headache, now it is just a dull ache.

Couple that with the AC going out and 100 degree weather, sleeping is becoming a luxury I miss very much!! lol

Stay Safe and indoors as much as possible.

You know how everyone was talking about natural gas explosions for awhile??

A little bit ago we heard a boom and windows shook a little. I thought my son might have knocked something over in the basement...no. So looked around outside (like I can see anything through the haze) and nothing.

Was watching the news for the wildfire updates and there was a natural gas explosion and two homes were destroyed, getting more info still.

Here is the kicker, we live at least 10 miles from the explosion!!!

We were clear on smoke smell and haze early this morning and then it started in again a little bit ago. Clouds, the real kind are blowing up also. Storms will be the nasty dry kind that produce high winds, lightning and little to no rain. Just what we don't want!!

That's the kind of weather we had for the last 3 years. Remember your smilie of the earth pole shift? The one of the globe. I wonder if it's shifted enough for our weather conditions to move a little more west? Idk and it's probably too soon to tell. It's just a thought I've had since Jasmine started posting about the New Mexico fires.

polar tilt

A good thought at that. Might have put areas in the desert zone than they were before.

I've got a question. I can't see the you tube squares when they're posted?, its just a black box, how do you fix this?
“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.” – Carl Sagan

I don't know how to fix it, Shad. Several people have commented on the same thing today. Someone did say it was a youtube issue. I guess ask the op's to post the link. People were saying those worked. Hope that helps.
