NASA's Fourth of July rocket launches were part of the Daytime Dynamo mission, a joint project with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency to study how electrical currents move in Earth's ionosphere between 30 and 600 miles (48 and 965 kilometers) above the surface. People on Earth rely on this current in the ionosphere, called the dynamo, every day.

Giant rockfish caught in Alaska could be more than 100 years old
Ten miles off the coast of southern Alaska, an insurance adjuster from Seattle caught a neon orange rockfish that is probably more than 100 years old.

The fish, a type of rockfish called a shortraker, was caught in 900 feet of water, weighed in at 39.08 pounds and is just under 41 inches long. It is the largest rockfish to have been caught by a recreational fisherman in this part of the world and it might be the oldest as well.

[Updated, 10:53 a.m. July 3: For those wondering why the fisherman Henry Liebman did not throw the ancient fish back into the sea immediately after catching it, the answer is that the fish was almost certainly dead by the time he reeled it in.

"When a rockfish caught in 900 feet of water is brought to the surface it usually dies," said Julie Speegle, a spokeswoman for NOAA's Alaska region, in an interview with the L.A. Times.

Rockfish have a gas filled organ called a swim bladder that helps them control their buoancy. When they are brought up to the surface, the gas in the bladder expands and can cause it to burst which can kill the fish.]

Scientists with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game will determine the age of the fish later this week by slicing through its head and removing two small ear bones called otoliths that float in a cavity beneath the fish's brain.

The otoliths have rings like a tree, and scientists can get a pretty good estimate of how old the fish is by counting these rings.

So far, the oldest shortraker on record is more than 150 years old.

Shortrakers live along the ocean floor at depths that range from 84 feet to 4,000 feet. They snack on crabs, shrimp and the occasional small squid.

London man dies of MERS-CoV virus: fourth death reported in two days
July 4, 2013 – LONDON - A man infected with a SARS-like respiratory illness has died in London, officials said. The Qatari man, who was being treated in an intensive care unit at St Thomas’s hospital in central London, had contracted the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus – or MERS-CoV. Hospital officials said that the man, who was 49 when he was admitted, died after his condition deteriorated. The patient, who was suffering from acute respiratory syndrome and renal failure, was admitted to an intensive care unit in Doha, Qatar, on 7 September last year. The man, who has not been named by officials, was transferred to the UK by air ambulance on 11 September. Before he became ill he had travelled to Saudi Arabia, officials said. Despite doctors’ efforts to keep him alive, including connecting him to an artificial lung, he died on Friday last week. A hospital spokeswoman said: “Guy’s and St Thomas’s can confirm that the patient with severe respiratory illness due to novel coronavirus … sadly died on Friday 28 June, after his condition deteriorated despite every effort and full supportive treatment.” In May, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that MERS-CoV – is a “threat to the entire world” and experts have raised concerns that the disease is “emerging faster than our understanding.” Latest figures from the WHO, published before the latest UK death, show that since September last year there have been 77 laboratory confirmed cases across nine countries, which have resulted in 40 deaths. British health officials have been advised to be vigilant for severe unexplained respiratory illness in anyone who has recently travelled in the Middle East, as well as any unexplained clusters of such illness. Coronaviruses cause most common colds but can also cause SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome). In 2003, hundreds of people died after a SARS outbreak in Asia. –Guardian

Nelson Mandela's health 'perilous,' court documents say
Pretoria, South Africa (CNN) -- Ailing former South African President Nelson Mandela's health had declined so sharply last week that his family was considering whether to take him off life support before the government reported his condition had stabilized, according to a court document released Thursday.
The document, known as a "certificate of urgency," was filed on June 26. It stated that the 94-year-old Mandela "has taken a turn for the worst and that the Mandela family have been advised by the medical practitioners that his life support machine should be switched off."
"Rather than prolonging his suffering, the Mandela family is exploring this option as a very real probability," it stated.
The following day, however, South African President Jacob Zuma announced that Mandela's condition had improved to critical but stable. Zuma visited Mandela in the hospital Thursday and said Mandela remains in that critical-but-stable condition, according to a statement from his office.

Mystery extra-galactic radio bursts could solve cosmic puzzle
Ultrashort radio bursts from outside the Milky Way may help locate missing baryons.
Astronomers have for the first time detected a population of ultrashort radio bursts with properties that strongly suggest that they originate from outside the Milky Way Galaxy. Lasting for a few thousandths of a second and estimated to erupt roughly every 10 seconds, the mysterious bursts are likely to be caused by a previously unknown class of radio-emitting phenomenon, researchers report in Science
[link to www.nature.com]

A study

A Population of Fast Radio Bursts at Cosmological Distances

Searches for transient astrophysical sources often reveal unexpected classes of objects that are useful physical laboratories. In a recent survey for pulsars and fast transients, we have uncovered four millisecond-duration radio transients all more than 40° from the Galactic plane. The bursts’ properties indicate that they are of celestial rather than terrestrial origin. Host galaxy and intergalactic medium models suggest that they have cosmological redshifts of 0.5 to 1 and distances of up to 3 gigaparsecs. No temporally coincident x- or gamma-ray signature was identified in association with the bursts. Characterization of the source population and identification of host galaxies offers an opportunity to determine the baryonic content of the universe.

It was large, spherical, luminous and hovering over Empire Bay. Drew Ryan had no idea what it was.

Mr Ryan is a hobby photographer, and managed to snap has numerous images and extensive video footage which he says back up his UFO claim.

"I have seen many unexplained things in the Central Coast skies, but most recently, on Tuesday night I observed and photographed a large luminous ball shaped object over Empire Bay,” Mr Ryan said.

"The ball changed colour several times until it went orange, and then it moved slowly across the sky to hover over Woy Woy for some time.’’

Cluster spacecraft detects elusive space wind by Staff Writers
Toulouse, France (SPX) Jul 04, 2013

"A new study provides the first conclusive proof of the existence of a space wind first proposed theoretically over 20 years ago. By analysing data from the European Space Agency's Cluster spacecraft, researcher Iannis Dandouras detected this plasmaspheric wind, so-called because it contributes to the loss of material from the plasmasphere, a donut-shaped region extending above the Earth's atmosphere....

The wind contributes to the loss of material from the Earth's top atmospheric layer and, at the same time, is a source of plasma for the outer magnetosphere above it. Dandouras explains: "The plasmaspheric wind is an important element in the mass budget of the plasmasphere, and has implications on how long it takes to refill this region after it is eroded following a disturbance of the planet's magnetic field. Due to the plasmaspheric wind, supplying plasma - from the upper atmosphere below it - to refill the plasmasphere is like pouring matter into a leaky container."

The plasmasphere, the most important plasma reservoir inside the magnetosphere, plays a crucial role in governing the dynamics of the Earth's radiation belts. These present a radiation hazard to satellites and to astronauts travelling through them. The plasmasphere's material is also responsible for introducing a delay in the propagation of GPS signals passing through it."

Comet ISON Brings Holiday Fireworks
by Staff Writers
Baltimore MD (SPX) Jul 03, 2013

"Its swift motion is captured in this time-lapse movie made from a sequence of pictures taken May 8, 2013, by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. At the time the images were taken, the comet was 403 million miles from Earth, between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.

The movies shows a sequence of Hubble observations taken over a 43-minute span and compresses this into just five seconds. The comet travels 34,000 miles in this brief video, or 7 percent of the distance between Earth and the moon. The deep-space visitor streaks silently against the background stars."

8th July 2013: New Moon in Cancer
7:15 a.m. GMT by Sarah Varcas on 05/07/2013

The Oak in the Acorn by Sarah Varcas

This New Moon in Cancer speaks of germination and new life. She encourages us to have faith in our potential alongside a deep resolve to ensure that potential is fulfilled. Just as an acorn contains the imprint of the tree it will become, so too do we contain our future selves in nascent form within us, waiting, slumbering, gestating, until the time is right to come forth into life and purpose.

In the darkness of this New Moon we are invited to dream our future selves into being. This is an intuitive Moon who has so much she wants to share and asks us to be ready to receive. She reminds us that no matter how often we may feel the necessary changes are too great for us to implement, in fact the change has already happened. We are already transformed, we just haven’t real-ised it yet. She wants us to stop striving now, to relax, be still and recognise the deep peace within, in which our potential has its being. There is nothing to add, she tells us, nothing to do and nowhere to go. At this moment, right now, we have everything we need to be who we are meant to be. We are already complete.

It can be hard to trust such a message at times when we feel vulnerable, fearful of the future, of the challenges ahead or of losing the securities we have now. It can be disheartening to want something so much and yet see no manageable path from here to there. Sometimes giving up seems like the only sensible approach: settling for the familiarity of a half-lived life rather than risking our current security to pursue the hope of a more fulfilling one. But this Moon exhorts us not to give up or give in, but to simply rest for a while in the knowing that who and what we truly are is already alive within us, waiting to be born.

At the time of this Moon, Mercury is heading back towards her and they meet a few hours later. Retrograde in Cancer, Mercury brings us information about the circumstances necessary for us to fulfil our potential. In order for the mighty oak to flourish certain conditions must be met: sunlight, rain, nourishing soil and space to grow. We are that tree and the woodland is our life, the things we do, the people in it. The ecosystem in which we grow is delicate, requiring close attention and loving care. In the coming few days we are encouraged to give it that care, to rebalance things that have fallen out of kilter, to address the dynamics between ourselves and others, to create more space or use the space we have with more awareness. The time is ripe for these changes now and they will come with ease if we undertake them with an open heart and a recognition that all we truly are is already within us, just awaiting the right time to break out of the acorn and grow.

The gentleness of this New Moon touches me deeply as I write these words. Her whispers are carried through the darkness to remind us that when we cease to strive growth becomes possible. All we have to do is watch and wait. Tend the ground, water the soil and know that life is unfolding exactly as it must – and we with it – into our own unique and radiant majesty: a mighty tree from a tiny seed, all in the fullness of time.

Happy New Moon everyone.
