H7N9 bird flu may mutate 8 times faster than regular flu, study finds
The new bird flu could be mutating up to eight times faster than an average flu virus around a protein that binds it to humans, a team of research scientists in Shenzhen says.

Dr He Jiankui, an associate professor at South University of Science and Technology of China, said yesterday that the authorities should be alarmed by the results of their research and step up monitoring and control efforts to prevent a possible pandemic.

With genetic code of the virus obtained from mainland authorities, the team scrutinised haemagglutinin, a protein that plays a crucial rule in the process of infection. The protein binds the virus to an animal cell, such as respiratory cells in humans, and bores a hole in the cell's membrane to allow entry by the virus.

The researchers found dramatic mutation of haemagglutinin in one of the four flu strains released for study by the central government. Nine of the protein's 560 amino acids had changed. In a typical flu virus, only one or two amino acids could change in such a short period of time, He said.

"It happened in just one or two weeks. The speed may not have caught up with the HIV, but it's quite unusual for a flu."

The fast mutation makes the virus' evolutionary development very hard to predict. "We don't know whether it will evolve into something harmless or dangerous," He said. "Our samples are too limited. But the authorities should definitely be alarmed and get prepared for the worst-case scenario."

The origin of the virus was puzzling due to its novelty, but He's research suggested some clues that differ from the mainland authorities' theories.

His team compared the new virus strain to all other H7N9 viruses identified in Europe and in other Asian countries that were cited by the Ministry of Agriculture as possible origins of the new bird flu, but found them all very different.

In fact, the new bird flu was quite similar to some familiar domestic viruses such as H9N2, H11N9 and H7N3 found in Zhejiang and Jiangsu.

He said researchers could not rule out the possibility that the new virus was carried into China by wild birds, but it was more likely to be of local origin.

I have been here lurking every night, as this place is my saving grace when I get home from work. Love all you guys!

I have something to share, and this is the only place I feel comfortable sharing it. Some of you know I started working a month ago caretaking for a gentleman named Carl that needed a liver transplant. He was doing well when I met him, but was bed ridden due to having been in a coma for a couple weeks. He needed to become ambulatory to be considered for the transplant, and we were working toward that goal. I grew to love this man; he was the sweetest most loving person, and I felt honored in a way to be part of his wellness plan. We instantly bonded. Well, he died late today in the hospital, after having complications. Two weeks ago he took a turn for the worse, and our goal of a new liver expired. I was the only one with him when they gave him the news two weeks ago. What I wanted to share, however, is that shortly before he died late today; I was alone with him in his room saying my goodbyes and praying for him. He was on morphine for comfort and not aware (that I know of). The room was dark as the location of the room left little chance for the sun to shine in, or at least it had not for the last two weeks even though it was sunny outside. Anyway, while I was holding his hand talking to him, with my back to the window, there suddenly was a strong beam of light that came through the window and shined on his face and upper body. I turned slowly around and I swear my thoughts were, “you got to be kidding me”. It was like something out of a damn movie! It was quiet, peaceful, and so very beautiful that it stunned me. It may have only been a ray of sun that broke through that gloomy room at the opportune moment, but the feeling for me was more like an Angel came to get him, or something beautiful was happening. I can’t stop crying over it, it was that powerful. I did not tell his family that came in a few minutes later. I was too overwhelmed by the feeling. I am not proud of what my first thoughts were, but it is the truth. I had no grace at that moment just a sense of awe and disbelief.

I lost many people when I was a young girl including my mother, sister, and later my father and boyfriend. I have refused to go to funerals ever since, and shy away from death in general, but not any longer. His death, as painful as it is, also was very beautiful in a way I can never put in words.

I thought of all people, it would be those on the FOG thread that would understand what I am experiencing. Thank you for listening.

This story was just on my local news. they were also talking about the mutations and that it appears to be spreading person to person and this is cause for concern of a world wide pandemic.

For two years I have been watching and reading about the dangers of GMO foods, especially CORN!! It is in everything. High fructose corn syrup has replaced almost all sugar in drinks, candies, bakery goods, and even gum! Not saying that sugar it good for you but it is a LOT better than HFCS! Corn is in pet food. It is everywhere.

Cancer, autoimmune diseases, ADHD, autism and many others are escalating at an alarming rate, yet no one seems to know why. Really? Call me paranoid but I believe they know why and it is from GMO's - or why don't we just call it the poison it is. You think that meat you are eating is GMO free because it was raised organic. Think again. If they field they were grazing on (or stream if fish), is near a field of GMO plant growth, then that so called chemical free field has cross pollinated with the GMO (or into the water).

We can't get away from it. I know home gardeners are now attempting to plant their crops at a staggered timing so their heirloom plants will NOT cross pollinate with GMO crops near by. Some are covering their crops but this isn't going to work either if the bees and birds pollinate their garden after having been in a GMO crop.

It is a battle that I am not sure we can win and that is the scariest part of all. Many people say grace over their food, maybe it is time we all do, to protect us from the poison that is in it.

I know, hot topic for me because it makes me feel so totally helpless.

I believe you are right about the cold...and I do think the "tool" is to get a sampling of the number of folks prepping.

AND...not only could there be power outages associated with flares...but in some places...as we are seeing now with spring storms bringing ice and snow rather than spring rains....the colder weather could generate outages.

I noticed that both here in Arkansas and in Texas the electric company has spent alot of time and money clearing trees away from lines for easier access. They are working so fast they are just butchering them and leaving a huge mess behind for land owners to clear. It did give me pause to consider...if they too are prepping.

The giant structure is cone-shaped, made of "unhewn basalt cobbles and boulders," and weighs around 54,400 tonnes, researchers wrote in the International Journal of Nautical Archaeology.
The mysterious rock pile is 10 metres high and 70 metres in diameter - about twice the diameter of Stonehenge.
Researchers believe the structure is a giant cairn, or rock pile that is often used to mark burials.
"The shape and composition of the submerged structure does not resemble any natural feature. We therefore conclude that it is a man-made and might be termed a cairn," researchers wrote. They speculated it was either built under water to attract fish, or was built on dry land that has since been covered by rising sea levels.
The structure was first spotted during a sonar scan of the Sea of Galilee, prompting researchers to don scuba gear for a closer look. The structure is made up of large boulders around 1-metre long. There appear to be no walls, divisions or construction pattern.
The "effort invested in such an enterprise is indicative of a complex, well-organised society, with planning skills and economic ability," researchers wrote in their paper.
