Operators of the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant in southwestern Michigan removed it from service Sunday morning because of a water leak from a tank, which last year caused seepage into the control room. Operators said they took the plant offline for repairs to the safety injection/refueling water tank. "There is no impact on the health and safety of plant employees or the public," Palisades spokeswoman Lindsay Rose said. The plant is along Lake Michigan in Van Buren County's Covert Township, about 80 miles east-northeast of Chicago.

This plant has been under extra NRC scrutiny after numerous safety issues. It's been shut down nine times since September, 2011, including in February for a separate water leakage problem.


It's on the opposite side of the lake from the plant in Illinois that spewed radioactive steam into the air last month.

The Office of Conservation, in consultation with Assumption Parish Incident Command, is advising the public that the Oxy 3/sinkhole monitoring alert status has been raised to Code 3 – requiring all work directly on the sinkhole, Oxy 3 pad and within the containment berm to cease until further notice. Seismic monitoring had detected a sustained increase in the trend of micro-earthquake (MEQ) activity in the area around the sinkhole and Oxy 3 over the past week, and a marked uptick in MEQs in the past day. This pattern of MEQ increase has been identified as an indicator of likely shifting and sloughing in the sinkhole and the area below it, based on past observations. The seismic activity is limited to the Oxy 3/sinkhole area, showing no indication of impact to the Oxy 1 area. Monitoring is constantly ongoing in the area and Conservation will advise the public of significant changes in subsurface conditions.

Arctic Ocean 'acidifying rapidly'

“Continued rapid change is a certainty,” he said.

“We have already passed critical thresholds. Even if we stop emissions now, acidification will last tens of thousands of years. It is a very big experiment.”
The research team monitored decreases in seawater pH of about 0.02 per decade since the late 1960s in the Iceland and Barents seas.

Chemical effects related to acidification have also been encountered in surface waters of the Bering Strait and the Canada Basin of the central Arctic Ocean.

Scientists estimate that the average acidity of surface ocean waters worldwide is now about 30% higher than before the Industrial Revolution.

The researchers say there is likely to be major change to the Arctic marine ecosystem as a result. Some key prey species like sea butterflies may be harmed. Other species may thrive. Adult fish look likely to be fairly resilient but the development of fish eggs might be harmed. It is too soon to tell.

Explanation: What caused the interestingly intricate tails that Comet Lemmon displayed earlier this year? First of all, just about every comet that nears the Sun displays two tails: a dust tail and an ion tail. Comet Lemmon's dust tail, visible above and around the comet nucleus in off-white, is produced by sun-light reflecting dust shed by the comet's heated nucleus. Flowing and more sculptured, however, is C/2012 F6 (Lemmon)'s blue ion tail, created by the solar wind pushing ions expelled by the nucleus away from the Sun. Also of note is the coma seen surrounding Comet Lemmon's nucleus, tinted green by atomic carbon gas fluorescing in sunlight. The above image was taken from the dark skies of Namibia in mid-April. Comet Lemmon is fading as it now heads back to the outer Solar System.

Yes Dear FOG Family I have insomnia once more! 4:25 AM my time and I cannot sleep as I type I am listening to the Trumpeter Swans on the lake flapping their wings and honking out their mating calls in the dark wee hours...it's Springtime in Alaska.

and for all you fishing enthusiasts here's the creek behind my house that dumps into the lake Salmon go up and down all late summer between my lake and the one across the road and my 'big dummy' who had just seen Salmon for the first time this summer and still doesn't quite know what to think of it all. That's my friend Cheryl narrating and you can hear me talking to Father Flores who stopped by for a visit. We figured out the one's on the bank didn't navigate the creeks bend and wound up there and died. There are thousands of these that come through and then they die in the lake later and it is a stinking mess for a few weeks...

Students who have dined at the Nordstrom Cafe located in the Stonestown Galleria may have been exposed to typhoid fever after a food handler was diagnosed with the bacteria earlier today, according to the San Francisco Department of Public Health. Those who ate at the location on April 16, 17, 18, 20 or 27 may have been exposed to the illness and are urged to seek medical treatment if they have any symptoms. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, typhoid fever is "life-threatening," with 5,700 cases popping up each year. SF State's Student Health Center cites symptoms of the illness as "fever, weakness, stomach pains, headache, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea." In some cases, typhoid fever is known to "cause flat, rose-colored spots on the skin." "We were notified by the San Francisco Department of Public Health about an unusual situation involving one of our Stonestown Galleria employees who has been diagnosed with typhoid fever," a Nordstrom official said in a statement issued today. "This is the first time we've experienced this type of situation and we apologize for any concern or angst this has caused." According to an ABC7 report, Nordstrom said the company is looking through credit card records to find customers and offer them free testing at a select local clinics.

Not sure hon, as I hadn't paid much attention to this. This is the time of year when over half of our planets are on the same side of the sun, including Ceres, only Earth, Neptune, Saturn and Pluto are on the other side.

I had to look it up since Astrology on a deeper level is a blank for me but Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars, Mercury in Taurus, May 8th and 9th. The info appears to be correct.

Okay, this isn't going to happen with Saturn for a long time: Saturn entered Scorpio in October 2012 and will remain until September 2015 as it does about every 30 years.

I've been MIA due to a raccoon invasion in my attic and trying to trap a family of 5 - instead catching possums and armadillos! Good lord, who knew my backyard was wild kingdom! And just for extra drama, my little dog, Lexi bit into a skenk or some odd creature (can't found it) and nearly died of a seizure on Saturday. OMG, its been crazy here!

Florida would be overwashed completely, Shad might be okay after a time, still standing as I understand it.

You’ve heard of the canary in the coalmine. Well, a species called the Gulf killifish might be the fish in the oil well.
Three years ago, the blowout at BP's Macondo well spewed more than 5 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. Despite attempts to recover it, much of that oil made it into sediments. And new tests show that such oiled sediments are bad for Gulf fish. The research is in the journal Environmental Science and Technology.
The Gulf killifish maxes out at about 18 centimeters in length and is ubiquitous all along the U.S. south coast. That makes it a good subject for testing the spilled oil's toxicity.
When a consortium of researchers ran those tests, they found multiple negative effects. The oiled sediments were associated with delayed hatching of embryos, smaller newborns and heart defects. And fewer of the eggs hatched at all, even among those exposed to sediments collected a full year after the oil spill began.
These effects might be found in everything from other fish to the famous Gulf shrimp and oysters. We're just beginning to understand the full price of our oil addiction.

Tsunami threat for entire US West Coast and Hawaii (and of course, Chile, Peru, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, Alaska etc). Repercussions seem to affect other coasts around the world over the following few months up to two years ("oceanic sloshing")

Can't find anything that is showing these quakes!!

Just heard this on the local news so had to look it up. Know quite a few with a stomach bug, but none had seemed really that sick. It is concerning when they close a section down.

DENVER — Part of Children’s Hospital in Denver was shut down Monday morning because of a widespread stomach illness that has had an affect on patients and staff.

As of Monday morning, operations were suspended in the Gary Pavilion, which is in a separate building from the main hospital. A hospital press release said authorities were working to clean up the building, and that none of the reported stomach illnesses were serious.

The main hospital is still open.

“It is safe for children to come to Children’s Colorado,” the hospital press released stated. “The majority of clinical operations are underway in alternate locations until the extensive cleaning is completed. In the meantime, The hospital will continue to collaborate with the state and county health departments.”

Attached is an updated image of the visible solar disk on Monday morning. Solar activity declined to lower levels this morning. Sunspot 1731 is now located on the western limb and will continue to rotate out of direct Earth view. Active Sunspot 1739 is showing signs of decay and may soon no longer be a threat for strong solar flares. Sunspots 1732, 1734, 1738 and 1740 all continue to be stable and quiet. There will remain a chance for at least C-Class flares today.

Wanted to tell you guys that on the History Channel's "Swamp People" series the last episode was about the sinkhole. Had some very scary footage of just how much that thing is really bubbling. Troy Landry and his crew hunt gators in that area and they had to get in and get the hell out as quickly as possible. In case you've never seen the program, it is a bit startling and maybe upsetting for people who aren't familiar with gator hunting. Down here it's a way of life. There have gotten to be so many gators, it has gotten to be a danger to the ecosystem, pets, children and folks in general. So there has to be a gator season to "thin the herd".

"Our number one priority is the safety and well being of students and staff," says Whitsell. Epidemiologist Benjamen Jones says the children's symptoms, primarily nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, are indicative of Norovirus, but the actual cause of sickness is still unknown.
