Feds delay approval of new Monsanto crops over environmental concerns

Too Little Too Late? Perhaps someone is listening....
The US Department of Agriculture announced Friday that they’ve ordered additional environmental impact statements (EIS) for herbicide-resistant crops that have been waiting for federal approval. Now Monsanto and the chemical company Dow will have to sit anxiously and await the results of those assessments before they are given the go-ahead to sell genetically-engineer plants that have raised serious environmental issues.

At stake is the future for a variety of corn, soybean and cotton crops that have been genetically-engineered to resist two heavy-duty pesticides, namely 2,4-D and dicamba. Both Monsanto and Dow have been hoping to get the go-ahead to sell these crops, but ordering further testing will set the release date back to perhaps 2015.

2 Alaska volcanoes on alert as lava flows
"We think of the Aleutian Islands as being remote and desolate" Power explained, "but when you come up to 30,000 feet we are talking about 20 to 30,000 people there every single day."
Power described Pavlof as "one of the most historically active volcanoes in the Northern Hemisphere. Cleveland is also "very active," having last had a large eruption in 2001.
A complicating and potentially troubling factor for Cleveland is it's not monitored with ground instruments, like Pavlof. Years of declining budgets have made adding such technology, to such a remote locale, increasingly challenging..
And all of it means it takes longer for anyone to realize Cleveland erupts, which could prove hazardous for any planes flying through.
"For instance, ... on May 4, we had a sizable eruption, and we weren't even aware for about 40 minutes," Power said.

First proof of patient-to-nurse infection of coronavirus: WHO
This is the first time health care workers have been diagnosed with nCoV (novel coronavirus) infection after exposure to patients," the WHO said in a statement.

The two health care workers were among six new cases announced by the Saudi health ministry on Tuesday.

The UN's health body said that while other health care workers had contracted the deadly disease in Jordan, there had until now not been clear evidence that they had been infected by patients carrying the virus.

"This is the first time we have pretty hard and fast evidence of it," WHO spokesman Gregory Haertl explained to AFP.

UPDATE FROM AVO
The eruption of Pavlof Volcano continues. Elevated seismic activity persists and a steam and ash cloud are visible in web camera images rising occasionally up to about 20,000 ft. above sea level. A diffuse ash plume was reported late last night at an altitude of 15,000 above sea level and extending downwind to the northeast for up to 100 miles before dissipating. A recent pilot report today indicated a dark ash cloud extending east-northeast at an altitude of 20,000 above sea level. National Weather Service issued a Sigmet yesterday that remains active today.

Residents of Cold Bay, located 37 miles southwest of the volcano, observed incandescent glow at the summit during the night. Pilot reports and photographs from yesterday afternoon indicate that the lava flow extending down the northwest flank is still active and has generated debris-laden flow deposits, presumably from interaction of hot lava with the snow and ice on the flank.

Officials: Multiple fatalities, 100 injuries in severe Texas storm
Several people were killed and more than 100 were injured Wednesday night when a possible tornado cut a wide swath through north Texas, officials said.
Kathy Jividen, a spokeswoman for the Hood County sheriff's office, said there were "multiple fatalities" in the wake of the storm that touched down in Granbury.
Matt Zavadsky, spokesman for MedStar Mobile Healthcare, said there were reports of at least 100 people being injured. He said the tornado touched down several times in Hood, Tarrant, Dallas and Parker counties.
There were reports of homes in Granbury being flattened with people inside, Hood County Judge Darrell Cockerham said.
City officials were sending school buses to affected neighborhoods to help with evacuations.

hi So glad you and yours are OK. Here's a pic of tornado they said it was a mile wide and a wedge tornado-eerie picture. We had twin tornadoes come through my neighborhood when I lived in TX a lot of people died. Scary things still remember the horrendous train like roar and the green/black sky. I lived in Tarrant Cty it looked like a war zone.
Take care hf
