Biological Hazard in Canada on Thursday, 29 August, 2013 at 03:35 (03:35 AM) UTC.
Description
The Sudbury and District Health Unit and the Ministry of the Environment are investigating a possible blue-green algal bloom at Amphitheatre Beach on Ramsey Lake in the City of Greater Sudbury. The Ministry of the Environment is taking water samples to confirm the presence of blue-green algae. As a precaution, the health unit has posted signs advising the public to avoid swimming, drinking the water, and allowing pets into the water if the algal bloom is present at the beaches. If no bloom is present, water can be used for regular recreational activities. The advisory does not currently apply to Moonlight, Main, Canoe Club, New and Bell Grove beaches on Ramsey Lake. The City of Greater Sudbury is working closely with the Sudbury and District Health Unit and the Ministry of the Environment to monitor the situation. "The Ministry of the Environment tells us that, should it be necessary, the David Street Water Treatment Plant has the technology to provide an effective barrier to all algae and can reduce the levels of algae toxins found in raw water," said Dr. Penny Sutcliffe, Sudbury and District Medical Officer of Health. Blue-green algae could also appear in other parts of the lake. Because blooms are not anchored, they can move from one location to another through wind and water action. New blooms can also form. All residents on lakes or rivers should look for blooms in their area. Blue-green algal blooms have an unsightly pea soup appearance and foul smell, and can produce toxins.

Biological Hazard in Canada on Thursday, 29 August, 2013 at 03:43 (03:43 AM) UTC.
Description
Lac La Biche has been added to the growing list of blue-green algae advisories issued by Alberta Health Services this summer. AHS announced on Wednesday that the toxic algae is present in the lake north of the community of Lac La Biche, 220 kilometres northeast of Edmonton. Residents living near the shore of this lake and visitors are advised to take caution. People are advised to avoid drinking from, swimming or bathing in the lake and not to let pets eat fish that come from it. Blue-green algae produce a toxin that can cause serious illness to animals or humans who drink or have skin contact with water where it is present. Anyone who comes in contact with water containing the toxin may experience skin irritation, rash, sore throat, red eyes, swollen lips, fever, nausea and vomiting and/or diarrhea. The symptoms usually appear within one to three hours after exposure and resolve in one to two days. AHS also warns that children are most susceptible to falling ill from the toxin because they spend more time in the water and are more likely to accidentally swallow it. Anyone drinking contaminated water over time could develop serious illness such as liver disease.

Re: F.O.G.
Power Grid Down Drill To Be Conducted By US Government

Power grid vulnerabilities are finally garnering some attention by government officials.
An electrical grid joint drill simulation is being planned in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Thousands of utility workers, FBI agents, anti-terrorism experts, governmental agencies, and more than 150 private businesses are involved in the November power grid drill.
The downed power grid simulation will reportedly focus on both physical and cyber attacks. The antiquated electrical system in the United States has been one of the most neglected pieces of integral infrastructure.
The EMP Commission , created by Congress, released a report in 2008 calling for increased planning and testing, and a stockpiling of needed repair items.

The SHIELD Act, which is stalled in Congress, is the first serious piece of legislation in many years to attempt to address the vulnerabilities of the power grid in. Recently American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) report gave the power grid a “D+” when grading various pieces of infrastructure and public services in the United States.
The disaster drill is being described as a crisis practice unlike anything the real power grid has ever experienced. The GridEX II drill Nov. 13-14 will focus primarily on how governments will react if the electrical grid fails and, for instance, the food supply chain collapses.
American utility companies are responsible for running approximately 5,800 power plants and about 450,000 high-voltage transmission lines, controlled by various devices which have been put into place over the past decades. Some of the utility companies which oversee the power grid reportedly use “antique computer protocols” which are “probably” safe from cyber hackers,” The New York Times reported.
The Times said experts call the power grid the nation’s “glass jaw.” Even the military gets 99 percent of its power the same way everyday citizens get it – from commercially run companies.

“If an adversary lands a knockout blow, [experts] fear, it could black out vast areas of the continent for weeks; interrupt supplies of water, gasoline, diesel fuel and fresh food; shut down communications; and create disruptions of a scale that was only hinted at by Hurricane Sandy and the attacks of Sept. 11,” The Times said.
Former Federal Energy Regulatory Commission chairman Curt Hebert stated that if the nation fails at electricity, “we’re going to fail miserably” at everything else.
Hebert also noted that during prior power grid drills, the scenario assumed the system would be up and running again relatively quickly after an attack. This drill will assume it’s out much longer.
If the power grid fails, a lack of electricity and food delivery are only the first wave of troubles facing the American people. Police could face major problems with civil unrest. Of course, there also would not be any electric heating or cooling, which easily could lead to many deaths depending on the season.
A 2012 report by the National Academy of Science said terrorists could cripple the nation by damaging or destroying hard-to-replace components, some of which aren’t even made in the United States.
“Of particular concern are giant custom-built transformers that increase the voltage of electricity to levels suited for bulk transmission and then reduce voltage for distribution to customers,” The Times said in a summary of the report. “… Replacing them can take many months.”
Said Clark W. Gellings , a researcher at the Electric Power Research Institute, “I don’t think we pay quite enough attention to the technology fixes that would allow us to make the power system more resilient.”

Colcord, Oklahoma, residents told to watch out for blood worms in water supply

By Jethro Mullen, CNN

August 29, 2013 -- Updated 1334 GMT (2134 HKT)

Blood worms -- small, red insect larvae -- have been appearing in water glasses and filters in the rural town.

Authorities have warned Colcord's 800 residents not to drink, cook with or brush their teeth with the worm-infested tap water.

Schools in the area have been closed since Tuesday as officials try to figure out where the bright-red creatures came from and how long it will take to get rid of them.

There are no known health effects from the worms, which range from about a quarter to a half inch in length. But local officials aren't taking any chances, hand-delivering letters to residents warning them to stick to bottled water for the time being.

Sea ice decline spurs the greening of the Arctic
by Staff Writers
Fairbanks AL (SPX) Aug 26, 2013

Sea ice decline and warming trends are changing the vegetation in nearby arctic coastal areas, according to two University of Alaska Fairbanks scientists.

Uma Bhatt, an associate professor with UAF's Geophysical Institute, and Skip Walker, a professor at UAF's Institute of Arctic Biology, contributed to a recent review of research on the response of plants, marine life and animals to declining sea ice in the Arctic.

"Our thought was to see if sea ice decline contributed to greening of the tundra along the coastal areas," Bhatt said. "It's a relatively new idea."

Re: F.O.G.
Scientist warns magma chamber under Sakurajima is 90% full: a large lava eruption could be imminent
August 29, 2013 – JAPAN - It’s been erupting constantly for nearly 60 years, spewing out smoke and ash and sending shivers through the more than half a million people who live nearby. Japan’s Sakurajima volcano recently blasted 100,000 tons of ash more than five kilometers into the sky, reminding surrounding communities of its power and volatility. Volcanologists warn that the magma chamber beneath the mountain is about 90 per cent full, meaning that a large lava eruption cannot be ruled out. The ABC’s North Asia correspondent Mark Willacy traveled to Sakurajima in south-west Japan to see how people live with this rumbling giant. In legend, this belching giant was named for a beautiful goddess, the divine being venerated as the symbol of delicate earthly life. But Sakurajima is anything but delicate. It is the mother of all Japanese volcanoes. Sakurajima is one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Some years it belches into life or erupts over 1,000 times and this bad-tempered beast is just eight kilometers from the 600,000 residents of Kagoshima. And recently Sakurajima showered this city with 100,000 tons of ash, turning day into night and sending people scrambling for cover. Its 500th eruption of the year sent plumes more than five kilometres into the sky and reminded everyone here just how vulnerable they are to the vagaries of this volcano. But mostly, Sakurajima is just a daily inconvenience. Volcanologist Masato Iguchi has been studying Sakurajima for more than 30 years, and while he’s not worried just yet about another big eruption, he does warn that pressure underneath the volcano is rising. Volcanologist Masato Iguchi said, “The magma level deep within the volcano is back to about 90 per cent of what it was before the 1914 eruption so we do have to worry about a big eruption in the long-term.” And while we were on Sakurajima, the volcano rumbles into life again, spewing out more ash and giving the people who live here some more cleaning to do. Across the small stretch of sea, the people of Kagoshima go about their business. They can only hope the goddess of the volcano can keep her temper for a little while longer. –ABC

"On August 28 at 07:27 UTC (2:27 AM local time in Alabama), all six NASA all-sky cameras in the southeast picked up a very bright fireball," he says. "Its peak magnitude was approximately -11, or six times brighter than the Last Quarter Moon. This may very well be the brightest event our network has observed in 5 years of operation."

"The cameras were completely saturated, necessitating a manual solution of the fireball's trajectory and orbit," he adds. Initial results indicate that the meteoroid massed 45 kg (roughly 0.3 to 0.4 meters in diameter) and hit the top of Earth's atmosphere traveling 23.7 km/s (53,000 mph).

Cooke is currently examining doppler radar records and other data to determine where the fall zone is located.
