Earthquakes are a natural occurance. Especially as we are on major faults and ring of fire with volcanic activity all the time.

It seems strange that no one overseas noticed this before, only now because of the devastating earthquake that hit ChCh and scary recurrent aftershocks. Now we get a prediction of an earthquake and Tsunami hitting the Capital in June.

Wellingtonians have always been aware that a big one could hit at any time, so whats the big deal over that. The elder that predicted this knows very well like the rest of us that this can happen its a matter of when.

If its in June or any other month we aren't going to let it stop us from having a life. We have have been warned and to take the necessary steps to keep ourselves safe and how to survive if we have this disaster strike.

No one can stop this from happening. Its beyond anyones control. As for the spiritual side of things I'd say to that.

I'd help any of my neighbours if they needed help during a disaster and I'd say vice versa that speaks more than words. I'd put Scripture into practise if I was you.

Once again, the fright of a large aftershock has rattled people in Christchurch, and turned out to be the first of a number of New Zealand earthquakes overnight.

The rumbling magnitude 5.3 earthquake hit Christchurch just before 6pm yesterday, causing an influx of calls to our newsroom from terrified locals.

Andrew Britt was walking across a field at the Sumner Rugby Club when it happened. He says his legs just turned to jelly. We have also had reports of terrified people screaming at Riccarton Mall, and on the city's streets.

The shock knocked out electricity for two hours in some places. There have been new rockfalls in Sumner, and fresh liquefaction in some suburbs.

LATEST: A central Christchurch building is being demolished after it was damaged further by a 5.3 magnitude aftershock yesterday, but early indications suggest the city has escaped significant new damage, authorities say.

The quake shook the battered city at 5.49pm yesterday and was followed overnight by a number smaller aftershocks, the largest of which measured 4.1 on the Richter scale.

The aftershock was among the largest to hit the battered city since February 22's deadly 6.3 tremor.

Civil Defence authorities said the Strategy Building in Victoria Street had become too dangerous to remain standing and was currently being demolished. Nearby roads were closed.

Some houses in the Lyttelton, Redcliffe, Mt Pleasant and Estuary Road areas are without water as repairs take place on 12 bursts water pipes.

There are more setbacks for Canterbury following Saturday's 5.3 magnitude aftershock.

Lyttelton Port has suffered more damage, with the reclaimed land the port's built on moving under the structures it's supporting.

The port's engineering manager Neil McLennan says it's frustrating to have another aftershock so close by.

"I don't think any of us actually really believe that we would have a fault line pretty well underneath our facilities," he says. "That is the nature of New Zealand and there are other places that are more exposed than us."

The 5.3 magnitude aftershock that rocked the battered city of Christchurch on Saturday was psychological blow for residents, Civil Defence national controller John Hamilton says.

The quake hit the city at 5.49pm and was followed overnight by a number of smaller aftershocks, the largest of which was a magnitude 4.1.

The aftershock was among the largest to hit the damaged city since the deadly tremor on February 22.

Mr Hamilton told Radio New Zealand the quake, which caused some superficial damage in the central business district, had a "psychological impact".

"People with smiles on faces, people were feeling pretty confident, but this sort of thing just sets everybody back, particularly those residents who have suffered additional liquefaction and flooding.

"I've heard stories of silt in their living room and silt in their garage," he said.

New piles of silt line the streets of the eastern Christchurch suburb of Bexley after Saturday's aftershock as fed-up residents wonder how much more they can take.

For Waitaki St couple, Martin Kraakman, 79, and his wife, Helena, 76, the 5.3-magnitude tremor was another blow, with silt 10 centimetres deep covering the section around the house and the garage floor.

They returned from visiting family in Australia only a week ago.

"It's so frustrating," Helena Kraakman said yesterday.

"I'm ready to just give up. We had such a lovely break from it all. I didn't want to come home."
