There is no ballot box now. These people have effectively lost their elected city government. By decree of the Governor. The people no longer have a say or control.

Interesting statistic: Benton Harbor is 92.4% African American with an annual median household income of $17,471 with 42.6% of the population below the poverty line. St. Joseph, the next city south of Benton Harbor on the shores of Lake Michigan is 90.3% white with an annual median household income of $37,032.

This is the most segregated community I've seen.

The city of Benton Harbor is in the top 3 of the most financially devistated cities in Michigan.
They pay you to bring business in...but eventually someone kills one of the workers and they end up closing down.
For the past few decades most of the government leaders for the city have been busted for fraud, embezzlement or something similar...christ there police officers were busted for selling crack in uniform out of their patrol cars.

Its a shame...Benton Harbor was in competition with Chicago for being the biggest city in the midwest at one point....

I don't know their constitution, but in some states if there is
a city government that is found corrupt the governor can fire them. They may even have an arrest warrant waiting for them.

I live in St Joe, MI and I *also* was shocked to discover that this Rick Snyder is the same guy I worked with years ago at Gateway 2k computers in IA... Yes, we had race riots about 8 yrs ago. Jesse Jackson made a big show during that time.
Yes, BH is troubled-- this areas schools were only desegregated in 1980 (I was also part of this as a child). However, I think that many locals are NOT happy with Snyder's martial law tactics. He cut off the unemployment extension this month as well, not cool with our high unemployment rates and increasing poverty. Many folks I know are going hungry. I've never experienced anything quite so scary. People are leaving the state to find jobs, families are being torn apart... I believe that BH needed help with their issues, but it's kind of like detonating a bomb to exterminate roaches. This turn of events implemented by Snyder is frightening.

I live a little over an hour from there, drive through there often. It is a hell hole. Crime rate is up there..violent crimes.
