Measurement of Fallout from Nuclear Weapons, Power.

Revised 4 April, 2011 A discrepancy in the figures given in the article and the source cited has come up. It looks like the forecast was 417,000 cancers for Fukushima containment zone, not 17,000 as stated in the article:

[link to www.llrc.org]

Friday 1st April 2011
417,000 cancers forecast for Fukushima 200 km contamination zone by 2061
Scientific Secretary of the European Committee on Radiation Risk (ECRR), Professor Chris Busby, has released calculations of the cancer incidence to be expected in fallout areas of Japan. Using data from the International Atomic Energy Agency and official Japanese web sites he has used two methods to estimate the numbers of cancer cases. He compares these results with estimates derived from ICRP modelling.

Numbers Magic?

"This post is about radio-Iodine but we have doubts about going with it. If the authorities can get us all thinking about Iodine and then reassure us that actually it's not a problem except for people in Japan (which is broadly true) then we might not realise that the really dangerous isotopes - Plutonium, Uranium, Strontium, Tritium in particular - are not even being reported. This is a massive failure of Governments' duty of care.
However, with that caveat, we'll fall into the Iodine trap because we have received many requests for advice since the Fukushima emergency began.
Our early advice on taking stable Iodine is unchanged. It is here.
The European Committee on Radiation Risk has published a method for calculating doses from drinking water or milk contaminated with Iodine 131. ECRR's main message is reassuring about the risks, so far as USA and Europe are concerned. They are not much different from what you hear from official sources."

" Black Ops on CRIIRAD?

In the last few days many websites and newspapers have misreported Iodine dose figures from the French NGO CRIIRAD. It is claimed that CRIIRAD has said if a child under 2 years ingested 50 Becquerels of Iodine 131 the dose would be 10milliSieverts. At best, this is a transcription error; at worst it's a propaganda attack intended to discredit good sources of independent advice by making them look like scaremongers.
CRIIRAD actually said:

Les enfants en bas âge (0 – 2 ans) sont les plus vulnérables : l’ingestion d’une cinquantaine de becquerels d’iode 131 suffit à délivrer à leur organisme une dose de 10 µSv. (Children under the age of 2 are the most vulnerable. Ingesting about 50 becquerels of Iodine 131 is enough to give them a dose of 10 µSv.)
That's 10 microsieverts, a thousand times smaller than 10 millisieverts.

We have checked the calculation. It appears that CRIIRAD has used ICRP dose and risk coefficients and a ten-fold multiplier to correct for the small body mass of these little children. This is reasonable (for any given intake, a small body mass means a larger dose). According to LLRC's arithmetic the effective dose to the child is 11µSv. Using ECRR dose coefficients it would be 27.5µSv.
So beware of nonsense on the net. The micro / milli confusion can arise..."

Dr. Chris Busby On Fukushima Radiation Risk

ECRR Risk Model And Radiation From Fukushima
By Chris Busby

Scientific Secretary
European Committee on Radiation Risk
3-20-11

Radioactivity form the Fukushima Catastrophe is now reaching centres of population like Tokyo and will appear in the USA. Authorities are downplaying the risk on the basis of absorbed dose levels using the dose coefficients of the International Commission on Radiological Protection the ICRP. These dose coefficients and the ICRP radiation risk model is unsafe for this purpose.

An old Prediction method above.

Below is the new model.

[link to www.euradcom.org]

These calculations have been shown to be accurate in the case of the population of Northern Sweden exposed to fallout for the Chernobyl accident, and also are accurate for the increased in cancer in northern hemisphere countries following the 1960s weapons testing fallout (the cancer epidemic). The public and the Japanese and other authorities would do well to calculate exposure risks on the basis of these approximations and to abandon the ICRP model which does not protect the public. This was the conclusion of a group of international experts who signed the 2009 Lesvos Declaration (this can be found on [link to www.euradcom.org)]

Re: Measurement of Fallout from Nuclear Weapons, Power.
"A 400 page report published by UNSCEAR in 2008 devoted a mere eleven lines on just one page to considering and denying DU effects. The UNSCEAR position was based on three cited desktop reviews - the RAND corporation 1999 report, the US Institute of Medicine 2001 report and the Royal Society report, also of 2001. None of these reports was peer-reviewed, and the RAND corporation is believed to be closely associated with the US Pentagon. All were selective in their references. All were out of date. None of them could deal with respirable nanoparticles of Uranium from weapons fallout, since no-one had studied it. Yet all three (and also countless reports from agencies like the World Health Organisation (WHO) employed the ICRP model to show that the doses were too low to be of concern.

It is interesting that the military and the nuclear industry internally take Uranium exposure very seriously as far as handling the material is concerned. Spills, even small ones, have to be dealt with all the rigour associated with contamination by radioactive material. Internal military publications warn of potential health effects. However, in all official reports and denials, Uranium suddenly becomes benign as soon as it has been fired from a gun and has contaminated the theatre of war."

The Publication mentioned above: [link to euradcom.org]

These are then the empirical sources of this conspiracy, the Weapons Manufacturers, and the faulty data which is distributed due to the need for production of Uranium for Weapons and the theory that Nuclear Energy is a bonus that makes more adn more production of Uranium necessary, lack of immediate safety preparation and that Uranium Nucleotides and Transuranics are NOT measured. Perhaps empirical is not the right word. If empiricism is derived from empirical and that outcome is false or fake then >Perhaps genocide is the word. This obsolescence arose just in time for Fukushima and too late for the early Atomic tests, Three-Mile Island, Dirty bombs and cetera.

I can't believe no views or replies on the measurement of radiation. Our measurements are only as good as the tools we use. These are our tools. Fortunately some of them work; but still, if you don't use them, your readings aren't accurate.

IAEA Studies Bikini Atoll.
"Bikini Atoll is one of the 29 atolls and five islands that compose the Marshall Islands. These atolls of the Marshalls are scattered over 357,000 square miles of a lonely part of the world located north of the equator in the Pacific Ocean. They help define a geographic area referred to as Micronesia."
[link to www.bikiniatoll.com]

"IAEA survey of Bikini Atoll" 2010 [link to www-ns.iaea.org]

"In May 1997, the IAEA sent an environmental monitoring team to Bikini Atoll to perform a limited programme of environmental measurements and sampling. Measurements were made of the absorbed dose rate in the air and of the concentration of the most radiologically significant radionuclides in representative samples of soil and foodstuffs.

The purpose of this survey was to validate the data that had been previously collected. Measurements taken during the survey were generally in good agreement with previously reported values.

Conclusions

Based on its review, the IAEA Advisory Group determined that no further corroboration of the measurements and assessments of the radiological conditions at Bikini Atoll is necessary. The data that have been collected are of sufficient quality to allow an appropriate evaluation to be performed. The limited IAEA monitoring of the area provided a good quality assurance verification of the previously collected data.

It was recommended that Bikini Island should not be permanently resettled under the present radiological conditions. This recommendation was based on the assumption that persons resettling on the island would consume a diet of entirely locally produced food. The radiological data support that if a diet of this type were permitted, it could lead to an annual effective dose of about 15 mSv. This level was judged to require intervention of some type for radiation protection purposes. There are a number of remedial actions that could be performed that could lead to permanent rehabitation of the island. These include the periodic application of potassium-based fertilizer where edible crops are grown or the removal of the topsoil from the island. Since most of the radioactivity in the plants is due to the uptake of the radioactive caesium, the potassium would replace this element, thereby reducing the overall exposure to the population. The scraping and removal of the topsoil would cause serious environmental harm to the island and have social consequences."

This is the fallout after the First Atomic tests. As I said before, somewhere; The chief way test results and drift of radiation times were chosen was clmatological. The wind was blowing away from Hawaii or Guam, something like that, so that time and place was chosen, bla, bla. After the tests, there were food and health problems; the government(US) offered (some plan was made) to remove 15 in. of topsoil from Bikini to make it habitable, or to apply Potassium to the soil. The new report says there is no way this is practical.

reparations were made, but now there is a lawsuit filed against the US Government. $724,560,902.
