Anonymous Coward User ID: 1347200 United States 04/18/2011 01:56 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | 7 billion hunter gatherers, huh? that's going to be an interesting proposition. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 904454You didn't really give this a lot of thought, didja? Most would die in the cities pretty quickly from lack of clean drinking water. I'm not sure how it will play out in medium/small towns. Personally, I'm not going to tell people a damn thing about hunting/gathering. Sure, anyone with a rifle can hunt, but I know how to identify all the edible local plants and mushrooms and how to trap small game and fish. I have a detailed topographic map of the state and can go out into the deep forest near a spring if I have to. Most people can only identify common berries and don't have any idea how to set up snares. Most people don't multiple ways to disinfect water for drinking. Most people won't be able to start fires once they go through their matches/lighter. The competition is going to be pretty light after a month or two. After that it'll get safer to cooperate with people, but I still won't tell anyone outside my very close family my secrets. |

Even if you are the best hunter gatherer in the world. There will be too much pressure on the wildlife from all the stupid people that did not prepare. Best bet is, dig in for at least a year before counting on the "nature boy" plan. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. "America is at that awkward stage. I suspect it won't get nearly as bad as you think, but it's a comforting thought to know that you have the skills to get dinner each night. Even in a not-so-good economy, those are valuable skills to have. Good on you. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1323478 United States 04/18/2011 03:22 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | After everything collapses and someone comes up to me with three boxes, one filled with gold, one with silver, and one with paper money, the only thing I would trade for is the paper money. I would give a few chicken eggs for the paper money, because I could light my woodstove with it. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1298593Just about everything the greedy call “valuable” in to today’s world is a total illusion. Sorry, OP...I didn't mean to hijack your thread with my hunter gatherer bullshit... I am just so tired of the charades that we call "life in America". There is no inherent value in gold, silver, or money- it's value is what we make it. A human values gold- what do you think they will be like? A human values love- how much gold do you think he will have? Who is right and who is wrong? I am not breaking it down into right or wrong, just reality. There is no practicality in a hunter gatherer lifestyle at the moment, this is reality, too. Bloody revolutions are what seem to come out of this mess, so get ready to rumble. This is not what I ever dreamed America would come to, but here we are. You would think that somewhere, someday, we would learn from our past, but we are living proof that we are no better or smarter than any generation before us. How can you sleep at night knowing your kids are going to be paying for your mistakes? And not only that, they will perpetuate them because you failed to act, think or listen? |

Best bet is, dig in for at least a year before counting on the "nature boy" plan. Quoting: Epic Beard GuyA couple years? No, not at all, like I said, most people will die of disease and a lack of water in short order. I also live on the edge of relatively sparsely populated town - I could walk to the forest if I had to. Even though I'm in the biggest "city" in the area, every other town in the area is much smaller. Forest is everywhere. Besides, I can live off the plants that few other people will recognize if i can't find any game. Additionally, how many people would know how to preserve meat without using fridges, vaccu-sealers and other modern methods? Sure, some grandma's may still know how to can goods, but not many - and that's only ONE method. |

They'll probably have government soup kitchens and lines at most, but it really depends on the nature of the TSHTF. If it is an EMP over the US then it would definitely play out like that. |
