GreenPeace Chains themselves to Energy Ministers office -> Stop Darlington Nuclear.
Greenpeace activists took over Energy Minister Brad Duguid's offices Tuesday to protest new construction at the Darlington nuclear reactor.

Demonstrators entered around 9 a.m. At least four people chained themselves together, then opened a banner reading “Stop Darlington Choose Safe Green Energy.”

Workers at the Darlington nuclear station filled the wrong tank with a cocktail of water and a radioactive isotope Monday, spilling more than 200,000 litres into Lake Ontario.

Ontario Power Generation is investigating how the accident happened and officials say hourly tests of the lake water show that the level of tritium – the radioactive isotope of hydrogen – poses no harm to nearby residents.

The spilled water contained 0.1 per cent of the plant's allowable monthly release of tritium, said OPG spokesman Ted Gruetzner.

But, surprise, Energy Minister Brad Duguid says the government remains committed to two new units at the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station at a cost of $32 billion (plus).

In light of what we are witnessing in Japan, there is no rationalization for Ontarians to accept the peril and bloated expense of nuclear power plants. This $32 billion could buy 16,000 1.5 megawatt natural gas generators that cost approximately $2 million per megawatt to build, which could be distributed throughout the province. This would produce 24,000 megawatts of electricity, much more than Darlington and plenty to service Ontario’s needs.
