A White House plane with first lady Michelle Obama onboard narrowly avoided a collision with a 200-ton military cargo jet after an air traffic controller made a mistake, forcing her aircraft to abort its landing at Andrews Air Force Base, the Washington Post reported Tuesday.

Obama was aboard a Boeing 737 Monday, returning from a television appearance and other events with second lady Jill Biden in New York when the mistake happened on final approach to Andrews, the newspaper reported.

The White House plane aborted the landing because controllers feared the cargo jet would not clear the runway in time, officials told the Washington Post.

The incident is the latest embarrassment for the Federal Aviation Administration which is dealing with the fallout over several air traffic controllers falling asleep this year, some while planes try to land.
