Here's a problem. If you attempt to bug out and have the only working vehicle, you will probably be shot by a guy who will steal your vehicle, who will be shot by somebody else stealing the vehicle from him, and on and on. Board up the windows and keep your head down for the first few months.

It's simple.

IF your vehicle has a distributor cap, your fine.
IF your vehicle has an ODB I or ODB II port (the port to hook up a scanner) and/yodaor has a "check engine" light, your fucked.

That is all.

1979 Chevy 454 4x4 4-speed, converted to points distributor, which it may have had stock but had been "upgraded" to HEI.

I haven't done it yet, but I plan to convert this truck to run on producers-gas, also known as carbon monoxide generated in a wood-burning stove mounted in the bed. It will then run on scrap wood rather than gasoline.

duh any vehicle with spark plugs would mean that it is not emp proof
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1296582

Wrong.

A car with a points distributor will run just fine. They have to be pre 1972-73 I think... before electronic/CDI ignition.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1287494

^ This is what you probably want to have. Anything newer would have a control module in the distributor for spark control, a circuit board....

I do, it's a 1992 Ford F-250 with all mechanical injection, nothing electronic makes it run. It's a 5 speed 7.3 diesel. I can start it, take the battery out and it keeps running. Anyone else have anything like this?
 Quoting: freedomjesse

Sorry to burst your bubble .

1992 ford has fuel injection .

taking out your battery while it runs destroys your alternator quickly..

your computer brain box/ electronic ignition module will fry if a large EMP hits . You need a points ignition system / pre electronic ignition and you would need extra sets of points because they would burn out when the emp hit..
 Quoting: Nailer45

fuel pump is electronic, as it does not run off the crank. Oh yeah and if a emp hits your crank sensor will fry and so will the glow plugs ..
 Quoting: Nailer45

MORON, Your BUS IS LEAVING! The Transfer pump on a 1992 IS a mechanical unit right in the spot where a mechanical fuel pump would be on a GAS BURNER. Crank sensor - Ain't got one. It WILL however knock out the glow plug relay (little barrel shaped thingy at the rear, driver's side of the engine. A momentary switch and 6 feet of wire and you're still in business, just don't hold the switch down more than 10 seconds as the glow plugs are 6 volt units - chosen so they will burn hotter faster than standard 12 volt glow plugs. Any other questions DUFUS!

Hey OP:

You thread called my attention as this has been a topic of discussion with a person "in the know" that has been spilling some beans around here. Having a completely elcetronics free vehicle will be the only way to move around without resorting to muscle once the EMP's start happening.

Does your vehicle has pre heating plugs? Those should also fail after the EMP.

I was instructed to have some essential electric/electronics carefully shielded as a back up measure.

Unfortunately, finding a good vehicle for WTSHTF is out of my budget by now, so I'll have to use the bike to get to the safe place.

I do. It's a 1977 Chevy Silverado with a standard pre-computer era Quadrajet and a point driven distributor off a '73 chevelle. 38 deg total advance @5800 rpm. Not only will it survive an EMP, it will giddy-up and go. Though no power windows or automatic butt wipers, it does have air conditioning, power steering and power brakes. It looks like a rusty brown turd, which incedently is exactly what I wanted. Got great 10 ply rubber on all fours and liability insurance. This beast has two fuel tanks from the factory. One is like 14 gallons and the other is around 18 gallons. With 323 coggs in the rear, and driving like a white man, she gets 22 mpg. The best part? SHe cost me every bit of 200 bucks, in small bills of course :)

WRONG!

Old Jeeps don't have computers...and even the 60-80's electronic ignition / distributors can be converted back to points and condenser setups.

EMP proof.

Old diesels are the best choice though.

Gotta agree with ya dude. This system is totally mechanical fuel injection. TOTALLY mechanical. It's the same exact concept that was utilized on large deisel engines used in trucks and Catapillar equipment for a great many years. Unless somehow and EMP wave can cause a belt to break, this turd should keep right on keeping on before and after an EMP attack.

One of the things that bugged me about the "cash for clunkers" program were the large numbers of 1980's cars on it that could be retrofitted away from the ECU if given time. Each of those cars was to have resin poured into the engine block by the trading dealership, rendering it useless, even for parts. Just like most government programs, the money comes at too high a price for me.

why not just grounding the truck by the bumpers and the axels and such? i have a 1997 f350 diesel. itd be a bitch to make one of those cages and it already surrounded by metal. im also thinking about when a car getting struck by lightning. itll still run but no radio or lights and such. also i was thinking even about a house in a lightning storm and all chimneys have lightning rods and are grounded. what about connecting a pole from like a chain link fence and connecting it to your concrete driveway (theres metal rebar throughout that) so the emp would transfered from the car to the ground.
