Dave Tyson says he was astonished to receive his Elections Canada voter information card and read there will be advance polling on Good Friday.

"This truly shows a lack of respect by our government when it selected May 2 for the election," Tyson said in a letter to the Free Press.

"This is just another slap in the face to all Christians in this country, and it's time we stood up and let them know we will not put up with it."

Well, we have no choice but to put up with it this year. The writ was dropped, the date chosen and the rules are clear. Voters have the right to advance polls. The prime minister sets the election date when he visits the governor general to seek the dissolution of Parliament. Once the election date is picked, everything falls into place by statute.

Here are the rules: The Canada Elections Act requires the advance polls to be held the 10th, ninth and seventh days before polling. Therefore, the dates April 22, 23 and 25 for advance voting are set by law.

Those dates coincide with Good Friday and Easter Monday.
