[link to www.adelaidenow.com.au] "Australia understands that Japans focus right now is on managing the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami and on the nuclear disaster." Mostly blah blah...but China won't like it.... "So we had Australian aircraft, working with the Japan Self Defence Force, ferrying Japanese supplies, while using US bases in Japan and with the support of the United States..." ...."It also requires a robust security environment. As staunch US allies, Japan and Australia are as one in welcoming a continued forward presence of the United States in the Asia-Pacific as an important contribution to regional stability." Not surprisingly, the MSM are not reporting anything, except the China angle.... [link to www.heraldsun.com.au] As the rise of China continues to pose a challenge for western leaders, Ms Gillard described Japan as Australia’s “closest partner in Asia”. And her repeated statements on strengthening defence ties with Japan through its tri-lateral arrangement with the US are likely to lead to a frosty reception when the PM flies to Beijing on Monday night. Ms Gillard has previously stated the need for stronger US presence in the region to “counter the rise of China”. The PM confirmed she had raised the issue of China’s role in the region with Japan’s Prime Minister Naoto Kan over dinner last night. |
