Does anyone have this survival knife? | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1294240 United States 04/22/2011 07:53 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I do and I'm impressed with the amount of utility that it has - but only when in camping/survival/"outdoorsing" situations. Otherwise its an overall horrid knife. Its cutting edge needs sharpening ALL the time. Lucky for you it comes with its own diamond strip right in the sheath..ughh. Seems like it would be cool but.. Also.. kind've expensive from Amazon. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1322804Gerber 22-01629 LMF II Black Infantry Knife Actually I was saying that if you bought it from Amazon your going to be paying a bit more. I know for a fact that you can get it for under 40USD from other outlets. Don't try to shop for it in a B&M though. Then your going to be paying worse then Amazon. I'd recommend getting it. This is a solid addition to a Bug Out Bag. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1294240 United States 04/22/2011 08:03 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | If your prepping a bugout bag, I seriously recommend a knife that does NOT have serrations. You'll end up having problems by killing sharpeners, and it really cuts down on your capacity for chopping and splitting wood. Also, get yourself some cordage and make yourself a nice lanyard. There are situations in which you will loose your bugout bag. But you should never be without a solid knife. Ever. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1173336 United States 04/22/2011 08:09 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I purchased that knife (Gerber) and returned it the next day. The first day I had it, the rubber molding (orange part) near the base of the knife started coming off because the sheath was very tight and was pushing the rubber molding back every time I sheathed it. Horrible design. So instead, I purchased a Kabar BK2 "Campanion" knife. It's a heavy duty all around survival knife. It can split wood with ease as it's as thick as a pry bar. It's only about $20 more dollars than the Gerber, but a much beefier design. [link to www.amazon.com] The other option is the BK7 Combat/Utility knife. It's not quite as tough as the BK2, but it is better for hunting type functions (piercing flesh). [link to www.amazon.com] |

The Voice In Your Head User ID: 1282802 United States 04/22/2011 08:21 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have owned many knives over the course of my life (30 years old). While the vast majority have been high carbon stainless steel, I did have one knife featuring a ceramic blade that I became especially fond of. Don't get me wrong, I certainly had good experiences with the others when field dressing game, or what have you. I have to pose the question to you....have you considered looking at a ceramic blade? Make no mistake, there are knives worse than the BG you are looking at, and there are better. Infact, I implore you to look just a little more (and outside of Amazon) for a good, high quality knife. And don't limit yourself to just a brand or two. Widen your scope. For example, here are a few more brands....and these are just a sample: Schrade Buck Gerber Kershaw SOG Cold steel Winchester Browning Certainly not trying to talk down on your initial idea, OP. Take a look around, analyze, do some price and feature comparison. These days you can come across a firestarter for pretty cheap. Hell, I could send ya one for next to nothing. Just don't wanna see ya spend your hard earned cash on a knife, only to come across something of equal or better quality for a little less money. If you look around a little more and the BG knife still tops the others, then go for it. I wish you the best in your search. |

I think that the Ontario spec plus series is amazing an built out of some of the best steel out there. Don't confuse this with the kabar, which is nowhere near as tough. The bear grylls knife is a dumbed down version of a gerber asek. I also think bear grylls is a retard and his ideas will get you killed. |

I sleep beside it. it doesn't cause any bleeding, so it doesn't make any messes - jsut internal bleeding and if a person blocks my strike - as i only swing low near the femoral artery or between the legs, they are going to get a broken hand or arm at the very least. CHEAP AND EFFECTIVE waht do yo guys use knives for? i always just carry a swiss pocket knife for food... LOL and if i was in a fight, i'd use my hammmer any day over a knife... LOL |

No link, leyword search and you'll find it. I own several and use them often including gutting and skinning game. Blades are very tough, hold their edge and good balance. A little pricy perhaps but no question about the quality you get. |
