IMPROVE GAS MILEAGE!!! THE SECRET GAS COMPANIES DON'T WANT US TO KNOW!!
Gas prices are on the rise and there's no end in sight...
A fuel additive that has been used for decades by everyone from race car drivers to MILITARY SUBMARINES is out there, but the gas companies are doing everything in their power to discredit this info to the public. If a secret like this got out, that would mean billions for them.
Acetone.

Acetone (CH3COCH3) is a product that can be purchased inexpensively in most locations around the world, such as in the common hardware, auto parts, or drug store. Added to the fuel tank in tiny amounts, acetone aids in the vaporization of the gasoline or diesel, increasing fuel efficiency, engine longevity, and performance -- as well as reducing hydrocarbon emissions.

How it Works

Complete vaporization of fuel is far from perfect in today's cars and trucks. A certain amount of residual fuel in most engines remains liquid in the hot chamber. In order to be fully combusted, the fuel must be fully vaporized.

Surface tension presents an obstacle to vaporization. For instance the energy barrier from surface tension can sometimes force water to reach 300 degrees Fahrenheit before it vaporizes. Similarly with gasoline.

Acetone drastically reduces the surface tension. Most fuel molecules are sluggish with respect to their natural frequency. Acetone has an inherent molecular vibration that "stirs up" the fuel molecules, to break the surface tension. This results in a more complete vaporization with other factors remaining the same. More complete vaporization means less wasted fuel, hence the increased gas mileage from the increased thermal efficiency.

That excess fuel was formerly wasted past the rings or sent out the tailpipe but when mixed with acetone it gets burned, though the engine still thinks it is running straight gas.

Acetone allows gasoline to behave more like the ideal automotive fuel which is PROPANE. The degree of improved mileage depends on how much unburned fuel you are presently wasting. You might gain 15 to 35-percent better economy from the use of acetone. Sometimes even more.

This is just a short excerpt from the page, here's the link with all the info...

DO NOT PUT ACETONE IN ANY NEWER VEHICLE....It will ruin the fuel delivery system...ie fuel pump, o-rings and seals...

I know of several guys that bought into this back during the last high priced gas debacle....several hundred dollars later they got their cars and trucks into running shape again

I know everyone is looking for a way to save $'s on fuel right now, but sorry OP this in not the way....good luck

How Much to Use

Add in tiny amounts from about one part per 5000 to one part per 3000, depending on the vehicle -- just a few ounces per ten gallons of gas. This comes to between 0.0003 % to 0.0025 % acetone maximum or approximately 1/15th of one-percent. Note that is around .78 cc per liter or one ounce per 10 gallons. Not more than three oz. per 10 gallons.

I'm sorry to burst anyone's bubble...on a up note if you have a older car/truck with a mechanical fuel pump (older chevy/ford) then you may see some luck as those types of pumps do not contain o-rings and plastic parts like all the newer cars do...

for anyone who disagrees do a test for yourself...get a small bottle of acetone and pour a little on some junk plastic and see what happens for your self...good luck, at 5+ dollars a gallon we are gonna need it

It's very possible they didn't use the acetone properly as there is TONS of misleading information about how to use it out there, more then likely put out there by gas companies themselves.
At 2 fluid ounces per 10 gallons, it's highly unlikely it will corrode any parts in your vehicle. Read the article all the way and you'll see that tests were done soaking every part that would be in contact with the fuel in the gasoline/acetone mix with no effect to the parts.

So maybe your friends were not using it properly, or you're just helping spread dis-info.

I don't have the link but it was on GLP about 3 weeks ago. The mythbusters short how acetone causes a hair less gas mileage.

I'd be afraid what this chemical would do to my non-metal parts and seals over a long period of time. I realize gasoline is also a solvent but a totally different composition.

I just had my GTO performance tuned to have a "lean-cruise" feature activated.

Leans out the air:fuel mixture...I went from about 21 MPG to 26 on the highway.

Overall my average on this tank was 22mpg from 16mpg the previous untuned tank.

ALthough I'm working on putting on a supercharger and a big ass Cam, Stall converter etc. Bout to drop back down to 15 lol

here is a more novel approach...cut back on your driving...

take your shopping list to work and stop on the way home, don't make a "Special" trip just to pickup something

carpool...have a guy/gal at work who lives close by you drive one day, they the next

there are lots of ways to save on fuel, if you really want to...use your brains and think up some that will work for you....as I said "Good Luck"

What year was your Toyata?
Although that doesn't represent the 15-30% increase the article claims, that's nearly 10%...
That would be a pretty steep loss for oil companies if 10% of their earnings suddenly vanished.
Everyone seems to have a negative opinion about this... (Possibly attributed to years and countless dollars spent trying to cover this knowledge up)
Take it from someone that has actually tried it people.
How hard is it to believe that the energy sector would cover up and generate dis-info about this?
Not hard to do when they make everyone terrified to put it in their car...

Re: IMPROVE GAS MILEAGE!!! THE SECRET GAS COMPANIES DON'T WANT US TO KNOW!!
I tried it in my 2000 Expedition. It was a bit of a pain to add the acetone whenever I filled the tank. You have to have approximately the right ratio (after doing the calculations, it worked out to about 180ml/tank) you need to add the same amount of gas to your car each time if you want to add premeasured amounts of acetone. Either that, or you can calculate and measure and add the acetone to your tank depending on how much gas you get. It's not the easiest thing to do when you are sitting at the gas pump. I figured it would be a lot easier to have premeasured amounts of acetone to pour into the tank.
Anyhow, I tracked my mileage for about a year before and then started adding acetone. There was a modest increase in mileage. But that was small compared to the seasonal variation. In fact, the seasonal variation is large enough to hide the acetone effect if you don't account for it. BTW, I used HPLC grade acetone, not the stuff you get from the hardware store.
I did that for about a year, and then stopped. There was a small drop in my mileage, but again, it would have been large enough to not see if I hadn't accounted for the seasonal variation.

The single best thing I did to increase my mileage (aside from driving slower) was to make a very simple modification to my throttle body. The performance increase was very pronounced, and the mileage increase was obvious after a couple of tanks of gas. I believe that the mileage increase was partially impacted by my not having to press down on the throttle as much as I used to.
For anyone who is interested, here is the link:
[link to www.gadgetmangroove.com]

Here is the peswiki writeup on it:
[link to peswiki.com]

If you are clever enough and handy enough, you can figure out how to do it yourself. It cost me less than $10 and 20 minutes of my time. Still, even if you have to pay for it, I think it is worth it.
Oh - I was so impressed, I modified my garden tractors. Not that I was looking for a mileage increase, but I did notice an immediate performance improvement.

Try using fingernail polish remover and see just how"potent" that acetone really is when you want to remove some gum or something. It sucks really really really badly.

try putting straight acetone from a metal can into one of those plastic bottles. i will..I am curious, too.

I have, and you are correct. Acetone is a solvent. However, it will only dissolve certain types of plastic. I'm not sure of exactly which types of plastics are present in every fuel system, but then again, the concentration of acetone is very low in this approach.

Please consider that gasoline is a solvent also. In fact, there are lot's of different petroleum distillates (solvents) in the gas that you get at the pump. Many of them will dissolve plastic too, but not in the concentrations present.

I'd like to increase my gas mileage but I'm going to research this thoroughly before I think of putting anything in my tank that can damage it. Money is tight enough as it is. Something to consider:
