My wife and I now carpool in her Accord at least three times a week. I have classes after work on Monday and Friday that start before she even gets out of work so I have to drive my truck on those days. However, by carpooling those three days and using her car on weekends when we do go anywhere, we're saving ourselves at least $40 a week. A voice of reason in a world of woo-woos. |
| Not A coward User ID: 1232279 04/23/2011 01:15 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This is something everybody should be aware of, read all the info and proper use of acetone and tell all your friends. Quoting: CalmShock for exposureWhat the op is talking about is actually referred to as "Volumetric efficiency". It is possible that acetone will aid in the vaporization of gas, but to add anything to your gas is inane. This is an internet forum people. I have a newer BMW. So adding anything to the gas to my $60,000 SUV will ensure I spend tons later replacing every part that gets destroyed by the additive. Newer cars actually increase volumetric efficiency by the use of turbos, superchargers and direct fuel delivery systems. So adding something you are not 100% sure of, that you read on the inter web is just not a sane thing to do. Years ago (in the 70's), people told an uncle of mine that during an oil change you flush the engine out with varsol. "Just a gallon or so... to get the grime out." So being a total moron, my uncle does this as he teaches me how important it is. Shortly afterward, the engine begins to make some incredibly loud and shrill noises. Guess what. Adding varsol to your engine during an oil change is a fucktard thing to do. Yes, gas costs more than it should, and yes..we are being gouged. But adding huge repair bills to save a buck is hardly worth it. Somethings, you just have to pay for.. Gas.. is just one of them. Would you buy an economy condom? You know..maybe a recycled one?... me neither... p.s, not shilling for the oil and gas industry, just trying to save a glp'r their motor... |

I'd like to increase my gas mileage but I'm going to research this thoroughly before I think of putting anything in my tank that can damage it. Money is tight enough as it is. Something to consider: Quoting: Circuit Breaker[link to neubranderinc.com] I can honestly say that I have tried it, and it has worked. But the impact was not as great as I would have hoped. I will have to admit that I didn't read the whole article. As soon as I saw that the mythbusters were involved, I stopped reading. I have a very low regard of their technical/scientific ability. On the other hand, I have a high regard for their ability to distract and entertain the sheeple. If anyone wants to know for sure if it works, they have to design and execute their own experiment. It's not that hard. |

It's not that hard. Here's the question though: did it really? As I've found out doing some research on this, many variables will affect your gas mileage such as tire pressure, outside air temperature, rate of acceleration, time spent in traffic or waiting at intersections and some others. It could very well be that the times you tried acetone, there were other variables taking place that were the actual factors increasing your mileage. To me, the best way to test this would be to put a car on one of those devices with the rotating cylinders under the wheels so you can ramp up to a certain speed without going anywhere. Fill the tank with a certain amount of gas and set the cruise control for 55 and go X amount of miles. Drain the tank and see how much fuel is left. Repeat the test with various amounts of acetone and the same amount of fuel. If acetone improves fuel economy then the amount of gas left in the tank should be more than with no acetone. Excellent point. I have found that tire pressure and air temperature have a large impact in mileage. I keep my tire pressures 5 or 10 psi below the rated pressure on the tire. I check it often. There's nothing that I can do about the air temperature. The other factors you mention are also all valid. All I can say I did my best to identify to account for as many variables as I could. I like your idea for a mileage test (assuming that all the other variables are monitored), but I think it might be (at least for me) a little too impracticable. |

In short, it is a wing you mount on the back end of the car, which creates a vortex behind you, simulating the effect when you draft behind a big truck, or bike and auto racers draft off each other. It has resulted in findings like a 78 Lincoln Town Car getting 57 mpg. Check it out! |
