These superconductors power a very sensitive magnetometer that can survey vast resources deep into the earth. Just as large as the discoveries it makes, the sensitivity with which it operates as well as the theories that were used to create the desired effect are equally impressive. Without them of course the entire discipline wouldnt exist... but they are there, and therefore it does.
