The most animals of Cernobyl are immune already! Or were they immune for millions of years? Or is the radiation in Cernobyl not the mass we were told to? Is maybe the radiation something else as we are told to? recent findings say that birds living around chernobyl have smaller brains than normal birds. Scary now, huh? Sleep tight. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 642285 United States 04/25/2011 05:21 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | We need to NOW start a "Manhattan Project" like effort using our best and brightest to do the following things: 1. Begin looking for a way to neutralize this awful waste. (There may not be any but we should start looking in earnest.) This should be one of our highest national priorities. 2. Start converting empty office space and even high rise buildings into nearly automated farms that can grow our food in a safe space, protected from rain, and fallout. This should be a major priority so the world doesn't end up killing itself on the radioactive food. Or starting wars over the tiny bits of safe land left to grow food on. We must have this online and able to feed most of the world, within five years. Once the switchover is begun, we will not be able to go back to standard farming of the land for hundreds of year unless #1 above finds a way of stopping the radioactive material in a hurry. 3. OUTLAW and dismantle all nuclear power plants world wide! No more making the situation worse. We must find a way to seal these waste rods in granite and put it deep enough in the earth that it cannot be reached by any human being for at least 3000 years 4. Pull any and all hidden energy technology out of mothballs and get it into use as soon as possible. This means Tesla's generators and equipment generating as much zero-point energy as we need and we must forget about making a profit on this. We need energy just like we need water and air. Take it away and our civilization grinds to a halt and we either freeze or burn up depending on where we live. 5. Science should start looking at a way to upload our minds and memories and personalities into computers. We may well find we do not need or want physical bodies any longer. We would have done this anyway within 100 years. Now we need to do it within ten or fifteen years at the outside. 6. Push R&D of nanotech which has the potential to go in and repair our cells and their miscoded and injured DNA. Again, we would have done this by 2040 most likely anyway. But now we need it by 2015 at the latest! 7. Pass laws allowing euthanasia by those who have absorbed lethal dosages of radiation and who are suffering. There is no point in prolonging their agony if the outcome is inevitable. BTW: this should strictly be under the control of the individual and NEVER mandated or done for someone without their consent by the state or governmental agencies. 8. To the extent possible, find lawful ways to hold Japan responsible for their role in making this worse and violating safety standards and upgrade recommendations in the name of profit. Tepco's borad and senior management should be tried publicly and then executed on TV in front of the whole world. Same thing for the Japanese regulatory bodies that failed to inspect and make these plants as safe as possible and who were pressured by Tepco to "look the other way" and falsify safety documents and checks, etc. Then there is the whole issue of lying to the world for months on end rather than getting in there and doing something to contain this mess immediately. While it may have been unavoidable because of the quake and tsunami, the damage could have been minimized rather than letting the open blazes and explosions go on and on while they pump water into the things from the sea and the let that highly radioactive water leak back out into the sea and the local water tables. 9. Acknowledge that the Japanese disaster was an "act of God" and probably could not have been prevented or foreseen by man. HOWEVER, what the Tepco staff and the Japanese Government did AFTER the initial accidents has been CRIMINAL AND SELF-SERVING since day one or two. The entire world needs to see these morons being publicly punished for their role in attempting to conceal/cover/and shift blame. Perhaps the best punishment would be to drop them and their families down into the reactors and let them simply walk out. By the time they'd get off the site, they'd have had enough radiation to kill them within a matter of weeks or less! Maybe that would be more effective than public execution (and what else is reasonable for such a hideous wretched crime against the entire world?) 10. Japan's entire GNP, stock market profits and publiy and governmental agencies should be taxed at 70% of their profit for the next 100 years to begin to pay the real costs to treat the injured and provide families income when their husbands/fathers/breadwinners have been killed or disabled by the radiation released over these past two months. Finally, maybe it's time for man to figure out that Nuclear reactions are 93 million miles away from us on the sun for a REASON! Bringing such a fire back to our home planet and lighting it has quickly taught us that this is a fire that cannot be put out. As such, it's best to leave it where our creator saw fit to place it. Well away from it being able to directly harm us most of the time! |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1349452 United States 04/25/2011 06:08 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | dear god please forgive me and my fellow man for being so arrogant and foolish , the older i get the more i relise how far weve strayed from you ,dear god forgive us for we certainly do not know what the hell were doing. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1348561mments by Dr. Michael C. Baker home I recently read Helen Caldicott's response to the letters to the LA Times on your web site and thought I would make a couple of comments. First, I am the individual from Los Alamos "where new and better nuclear bombs are currently being designed for use in third world countries". This is an interesting and totally unsupportable statement that she has made. I am unaware of any such work and would question why on earth she believes that the US would want to use nuclear weapons in a third world country? Let me add that I do not currently and never have worked on nuclear weapons. Although weapons work certainly is carried out at Los Alamos, the laboratory employs around 10,000 people doing work as diverse as Native American anthropology to the Human Genome Project. I personally work in nuclear safeguards which is a field dedicated to the nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction not building better and new ones. In her letter she states: "Should I defend myself when it is obvious that radio- iodine was only one of the fallout isotopes, yet none of you have had the integrity to examine the medical implications of others, including strontium 90, cesium 137, plutonium and other transuranics?" Funny that there are dozens if not hundreds of scientific studies on the health effects of these isotopes, many of them carried out here at Los Alamos. It seems this is another unsupported lie on her part. Perhaps in the many hours she spends campaigning against all things nuclear, she could spare a few to review the scientific literature. I would also like to comment on her use of 20 year old information on uranium enrichment, a very small part of the nuclear fuel cycle, to make the assertion that nuclear power is contributing to global warming. In 1996 alone, U.S. nuclear power plants prevented the discharge of 147 million tons of carbon, 2.5 millions tons of nitrogen oxide and 5.3 million tons of sulfur dioxide. Since 1973, nuclear power plants have accounted for 90% of all carbon emission reductions achieved by the electric utility industry. By picking one small part of the nuclear fuel cycle Ms. Caldicott has ignored these numbers and a real benefit of nuclear energy Finally I would like to comment on what she calls an "important" book for the public. Her book, Nuclear Madness, is so full of half truths and blatant lies that it is hard for a scientist to read. You will note that her references include very few peer reviewed scientific papers and when they do they frequently do not support her conclusions. I believe that she hopes the reader will not take the time or have the resources to look up the scientific papers. I would conclude by encouraging the people that read her book and papers to do just that. Sincerely, Michael Baker --------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael C. Anonymous Coward User ID: 1349452 United States 04/25/2011 06:13 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | In her response, Helen Caldicott listed several references that she claims support her view that low doses of radiation are "6 to 8 times more dangerous that originally estimated". Let's consider her reference number 3, on the epidemiological study of Rocketdyne workers. As usual with the scientific claims of Helen Caldicott, the study does not provide strong evidence for her position. Actually the study showed that Rocketdyne radiation workers had a lower incidence of death from "all causes" and also a lower incidence of death from cancer, than the U.S. population and also in comparison to other worker groups. Let's consider the actual percentages. Compared to the U.S. population, Rocketdyne radiation workers had a 32% lower death rate from "all causes" and a 21% lower death rate from "all cancers". Compared to a similar worker control group, Rocketdyne radiation workers had a 38% lower death rate from "all causes", and a 11% lower death rate from "all cancers". The number of radiation workers from which these percentages are derived is over 4,000 which allows a high degree of confidence that the differences are real and not due to chance. |

The extraction of important conclusions from a very small set of numbers is a common characteristic of epidemiological studies by the anti-nuclear groups. The most important conclusion from the Rocketdyne study and others like it, is that common personal habits and cultural factors are far more important in determining risk of premature death than is exposure to ionizing radiation. The anti-nuclear activists would save more lives, thousands of times more lives, if they attacked smoking, abuse of alcohol, and careless driving habits, rather than the use of radioactive materials. |
