he majored in political science for undergrad and got his graduate degree in public admin and has been unemployed for the past year.

He is living with his parents and my dad calls him "pathetic," "a loser," "spoiled," and "weak." It makes me mad because I know this guy is bright blah blah blah

Your dads a smart man. He kept a roof over your head and food on the table and he made his way in life which obviously made you what you are today.

So whats the problem. Your friend a fruit or limp wrist sissy and your dad says it as he sees it. If my dead dad were alive to say that about a life long friend I had, I'd laugh and say come on pop, give the loser a break. Than ask why dad, why beat down my friend.

I've known this guy since I was 8 years old, he was my best friend all through school, and we took separate paths in college. I went the engineering route and found a job, but he majored in political science for undergrad and got his graduate degree in public admin and has been unemployed for the past year.

He is living with his parents and my dad calls him "pathetic," "a loser," "spoiled," and "weak." It makes me mad because I know this guy is bright and has a passion for that field, but I hate the way people will judge you if you aren't "successful" and going through rough times.

It's not just my father either. Many people look down their nose at you if you aren't rolling in dough and really getting ahead in life. It's like you are inferior if you don't fit the overachiever mold, for whatever reason.

Very sad, and I consider myself to be conservative. I just have empathy for others and am not cold-hearted like so many of these self-righteous types are.

If you are going through similar troubles as my best friend, my prayers are with you.

As an older guy, I say:

Stop hating on the younger people. They did nothing to cause the economic mess we are currently in.

Furthermore, young people have very limited opportunities available today. The current shitty job market is not their doing.

So, you older bitter people who are critical of younger people really need to go fuck yourselves.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1321419

Agreed.

And one can call them stupid, but they didn't fill the schools with idiots for teachers, nor did they write the textbooks that teach shitheads like Woody Wilson were heroic presidents.

The fact is, for generation after generation no single one has been able to stand against TPTB and shove them back to there holes.

And until one generation screws up the courage and will and fortitude and does just that, nothing will change.

Lemme guess, your friend is part of the most wortless group of Americans this great country has ever seen. That would be the 18 to 35 year olds.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1279601

I think it's pretty damn clear that the Baby Boomers are by far and away the worst generation this country has or ever will see. Spoiled, greedy, self-righteous, ignorant, arrogant..... Us "18-35" year olds are going to have you living in those Fema camps soon! You guys already screwed up your Social Security, so you should be happy with what you get once your too old to ruin, er, run the show.

What is pathetic is when people shell out all sorts of money for college and then can't get a job. That is time and money wasted. They should make sure there is work in their area before they even think of getting a degree. Most people would be better off going to tech school these days. So I get where your dad is coming from. You were smart, your friend no so much and it is showing.

Re: My dad just called my unemployed friend (recent college grad) a loser
Tell your friend not to give up. I have a similar story.

I graduated around 1975 during the Jimmy Carter caused recession and there were no jobs. My major was in Physics and I couldn't get a job so I lived with my parents and made lawn sculptures for money.

Then I decided to go to graduate school figuring that when I got out the economy would be better. Three years later with a masters in the computer medical field things were better and I got a job. Amazingly, my education debt was only $2,000 which is another thing that has changed. Now they screw you for an insane amount to get a degree.

I might have been called a loser back then and for sure the economy right now is worse then back then so your friend is no loser for not having a job. He will be a loser if he doesn't figure something out soon. But it has never been tougher. Those bastards in Washington have pretty much ensured the recovery will be long in coming and painful for all.

your dad's a dick and he's full of shit, a majority of the people who earn loads of pounds are actually really shit at doing anything, they just bullshit their way into management jobs and then spend their time telling other people what to do but actually not really being able to do ANYTHING themselves, seems your dad is the one caught up in games of proving your worth to other people through the acquisition of material goods and money, but the people who really have value are the ones who judge their own advancement by and for themselves, look up "positive disintegration"

Karma is going to bite your Dad in the ass.

He has found employment easy during his years, but soon he may be facing a future where he doesn't have a job either. If he is old enough to retire, he may find that his pension plan defaults and social security dries up and medicare is cut to the point that he lives a sickly old age.

The young man is NOT A LOSER. He completed his degree. That is a major accomplishment and he deserves respect for it. I can imagine paying back student loans is the reason that your friend feels stuck living with his parents.

Your Dad's generation didn't have to live that. Back in his day College was something you could pay for yourself as you worked your way through college. Now days the tuition has skyrocketed due to the easy availability of student loans.

At first I thought he just spent 4 years in college but now I see he spent an extra 2 years. So after 6 years he has nothing to show for it except most likely bills and living with his parents again. I see where the dad is coming from. He is calling it as he sees it. Life is brutal and is going to get worse. Kids just aren't seeing this and stupid parents are not directing them. Most kids would be better off getting a job at McD's right out of high school to take the time to see where they want to go and where the jobs really are. This young man probably wouldn't be able to get a job there because of too much education now. Rock and a hard place. His future looks pretty grim.

Truly, anyone who wastes their life trying to get ahead in this rat race, chasing artificial dreams, will end up being the biggest loser of all because they just wasted their entire life slaving away for material satisfaction.

Yup!

And universities have become money makers and a big business. They could care less if you have a job when you graduate. Parents push kids into college and high schools do the same. Most kids have no idea what they want to do and then end up with an expensive piece of paper. Then they realize in their mid 20's they have wasted a big part of their youth.

Most kids would learn more if their parents gave them some money and a rail pass and sent them traveling for a year. That is an education.

I am now 60 and worked since I was 10 years old . . . Longer if one counts the years working on the farm. The last four years I have worked very little . . . Living on a pension and taking care of an extended family. I was trying to make ends meet during the Carter economy and before it was very tough and now it appears worse. Many, many people are going to be under employed for several years or for ever . . . Jobs have been sent out to foreign countries, the world economy has been imposed on the US and Europe. This is a plan . . . The middle class and especially the mid to upper middle class is to be exterminated (economically). The power of the middle class is to be ended. . . so we are in for a very tough ride. I am sorry for the young people who expect what their parents have . . . Most won't see what they see their parents have. . . Bottom line!
