Why don't you take a stopwatch and measure the time it takes between when you touch your toe and when you feel it.

Then come back to us and report the findings of our experiment.

"Instantly" is a VERY relative term.

Re: why when I touch my toe do I feel it instantly?
ok I will give you a good answer seeing as no one here has thought what a brilliant question it was that you asked. Dont feel bad that you are smarter then the dicks here for asking it.
Its interesting question because logically you should not feel it at the exact time but you do. There was a study done and according to this study your brain lags and has a "buffer" amount in is processing. Very much like a computer watching a clip on the net. It waits for a certain amount of time before delivering the sense to your consciousness. Kinda like it's waiting to see if there is any other sense that must go along with the one it has just got. ie your eyes see you touching your toe, the brain gets the signal from your eye, then it waits till it gets the signal from your toe before it gives you both what the eye sees and what the toe felt in the same instant.
That is why it seems to you that there is no lag between the two.
Now the next question is.. Does that mean that taller people live further in the past then short people? The answer is yes.
The taller you are the longer your brain waits for the all the senses to get to the brain, but we are talking nano seconds!

Hope this helped.
ps. so good to see a good question now and then. :-)

Not instant. There is a delay between the impulses.

There nerves there, they produce a electrical charge to send a signal to your brain. This is how you know something is touching it.

Didn't you pay attention at biology class?

which would you say is more instntly then...touching your toe and the signal has to travel to brain, or connecting an electrode or something and inputting a signal straight there? which would be instant, or faster?

Because you touched it, fuck nut, and it just so happens that it is rigged with nerves which tell you when something is good, bad or potentially fatal. Lucky huh?

Re: why when I touch my toe do I feel it instantly?
Since the body is one complete organism, the instant the toe is touched that completes the cycle and signal that something was touched.

And since the mind is not a part of the body, but the body is a part of the mind, then the mind paying attention to the process of 'touch the toe' is aware of it happening, instantly.

Re: why when I touch my toe do I feel it instantly?
what's an even more interesting theory is that the brain sends the signal somehow backwards in time so that the instantaneous time you see yourself touching your toe, the brain has sent the info back in time, because it takes time for the impulse from your toe to reach your brain, so that the two senses appear to coincide at the same time.

trippy, right? and you thought this was so simple lol

But that's a really poor theory. The conventional explanation makes much more sense.

maybe. but try this simple experiment. first have someone drop a ruler and you tryand catch it in your hand. pretty easy. but then sit down, and try to catch the ruler between your feet. takes a rather long time to catch it, right? amazing what a little amount of time can make. but yet it appears to us simultaneously when we feel ourselves touching our toe. am i not the only one who finds this fascinating?

i'm not making one judgment over the other in terms validity of theory as to its explanation. i'm just offering the various theories. what is the conventional theory that you speak of anyway btw? the one about the buffer? just curious what you think.

i'm not arguing with you, i'm just asking more questions. so then why does it take longer for your feet to react if you try to catch the ruler with your feet? should be instantaneous if it traveled at the speed of light.

Your brain waves are faster than the speed of light. The synapses that happened between your nerves, to the brain & in the brain feel instantaneous, but they aren't.

interesting. i want to believe this. but still, my reaction time and the time of my students i've conducted this experiment on...I'm a teacher in korea...have always been slower when trying to catch the ruler with your feet that with your hands. still i don't understand with the conventional theory. the buffer or backwards in time still makes more sense to me.

If you've never tried to catch something with your feet on purpose (like most people have with their hands) than there is no set neuro pathway in the brain. If you continue to catch something with your feet the pathway will be set & the feeling will be instantaneous.

Re: why when I touch my toe do I feel it instantly?
man.. it's scary to imagine the complexity and enormity of our sensory buffering. like, we don't even fuckin KNOW what shit really looks like or feels like or is or anything! it's all a counterfeit illusion!
