TomTom sold user data to cops!!!

I guess people are more concerned with Obama's fucking birth certificate. Talk about distraction.

The thing that shit me the most about TomTom's statements over this is that TomTom said it will "rethink how it shares personal data".

Rethink? Why are you "sharing" data at all?

Glad I never got an in-car GPS. And they called me paranoid for it too.

I'm a former truck driver.I used to use tom tom to find my way.I got stopped by DOT and they wanted to see my log books so I showed them.My log books didn't match my tom tom's time and location of my trip so they confiscated my tom tom and my CDLs.Now I lost my license and I can't drive.Fuck tom tom.

I do not agree with data collecting without legitimate cause and the authority to do it but what did the customers really think was going to happen? They do it because they can and, like everybody else is doing these days, they'll sell what they gather for a profit. Why should the cops do their own 'research' if there's already somebody else doing it for them?

What I bolded up there in your post, is that what is actually happening? If it is, who can argue with the necessity for it? I can see no good reason to dispute the traffic cops' right to watch those areas - they just should have done their own work openly instead of spying in this sneaky manner.

holy cow my paranoia about GPS and cell phones and their info being sold or handed over was true. So i am not such a dumb ass for having no gps and a dumb pay by the minute cell

i agree with most of what your saying but here in the states traffic cameras issuing tickets is unconstitutional and most of the time get thrown out of court for hearsay, most people dont know that but its the truth. you have a right to face your accuser in the court of law and since that camera cant show up and testify, ticket gets squashed

Careful of the spin, though. In Australia they define breaking the speed limit as automatically dangerous, so anywhere that can be shown where Joe Citizen is breaking the speed limit en masse must automatically be a huge danger zone.

Proper road engineers would (correctly) argue that since the 85th percentile* is copping a beating here, then obviously the speed limit is set too low.

*85th percentile: The speed that 85% of drivers feel comfortable at on a given stretch of road.

So in other words, they didn't use the data for driver safety, they did it for $$$. The same reason why TomTom stored the data in the first place. $$$.

Of course the reason these pups are marketed as convienent and affordable, is to get as many people as possible tracked, duh. Same with the i-phone, and cell phones in general.

Yes.Not only that but they wouldn't let me drive the truck because they said I was over my hours.They had the truck towed and inpounded and I had to call my wife to come pick me up.

Don't worry, I'm with you man. I never did the GPS thing, although I did have a mobile phone for a few years. One day it just really got to me how the phone actually knew where it was all the time and would blatantly display locality information on the screen.

I pulled this quote from one of the comments on Business Insider, to actually believe that it was only TomTom that does this would be foolish, TomTom just got caught, thats all.
