Re: Giant German Shepherds? WOW
These are not German shepherds they are Alsatians.
Anything other than the standard breed of German Shepherds as defined by the Germans themselves is not a German Shepherd they are Alsatians they are not thorough bred but different inbreeds.

They are "King German Shepherds"

I had one, its recognized by Rare Breed Association.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1296570

No see you are another uneducated fool.
Any dog not going back to the bloodlines in Germany is not a German Shepherd it is an inbreed many bred wit Belgian Shepherds.
They are called Alsatians.
An Alsatian and a German Shepherd are 2 different things.
The only real German Shepherd is the one that goes back to the pure bloodlines in Germany.
There can not be a "breed" of German Shepherd.
There is a German Shepherd, and any different breed is an Alsatian.
You are just another one of the millions of fucking dense people who do not understand this.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1343936

And yet again ... Wrong

All the "Alsatians" are is German Shepherds brought to England that were called something other then German Shepherds as a result of the disdain for all things German including Hitler just before, during and after WWII ... SO the breeders of the day called them Alsatians.

They are not white, nor are they this or that.. They are GSD's period. THere were German speaking people in an area of France known as Alsace who had GSD's... But it is still the GSD.

Some fancy themselves as special or unique and think they need to be above the rest so they say, "We have Alsatians" What they have is their nose stuck up so high they dont realize its up their a$$...

and its still the GSD.

An absolute fantastic breed despite all the efforts to ruin it by politically correct daisies who dont want a dog to bark or bite to protect, they just want 95LB lap dogs

There is only 1 breed, but for the sake of survival of the true breed values, the are now West German Show Lines and Working Lines comprised of animals whose heritage is from the DDR and Czech Republic. Same breed, GSD, but different as night and day in capabilities.

Do want to clarify because I can't say I completely agree or disagree with this part even though I just stated I agreed with everything lol The working German Shepherd has its place, don't get me wrong. However, some of those dogs are bred to be so intense that only the most experienced, rightfully, can own them. For people that DO want a pet, they should have an option, provided the dogs are healthy and well-tempered, just not one that is so tenacious and driven that it does not think before it acts. Natural guardians, absolutely, unfortunately some out there are just breeding "crazy" dogs.

I'm not understanding what this means, why would you think that dogs that are registered as German Shepherds not trace back to Germany but instead are mixed?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1158661

Because its a standard that started in Germany, it exists outside Germany.
But most 80% think this is not so because they are dumb.
There is only 1 kind of German Shepherd only ONE kind.
I once had what I thought was a Long Haired German Shepherd.
Until I was schooled by a German man on the fact that he was not a German Shepherd but an Alsatian and there is no such thing as a long haired German shepherd.

Wait, so you're saying because you were "schooled" by someone, then it must be true? I hate to break it to you, but the long haired gene has been in the breed since the beginning, why do you think it is prevalent in all lines? Did you know that at one point, German Shepherd Dogs came in not only short and long coats, but wire coats as well? Did you know that the German registry, the SV, recently allowed long stock coats are again permitted to be shown in their own separate class? Though their are "Altdeutsche Schäferhund" breeders throughout Europe, which are long coats that technically mean "Old German Shepherd Dog".

I hope sometime in the future, healthy ver of these wonderful dogs will return.

They tend to die young, some way to powerful in the front, and weak hips so on.

100kg+ is not easy for a dog to support if on 2 legs so on, they are very protective/curious so will try to get a peak over even the higest fence :(.

It seems idiotic to me to breed them larger, The breed suffers from hip dysplasia. Poor dogs always end up crippled. If you want the perfect breed of dog you want one that is all kinds. Mutts are the best.

Not completely true. I have an Australian Shepard/Border Collie/ Blue Healer mutt, and she was just diagnosed with hip dysplasia in both ball-and-socket joints. She's only 7 months old, and small-medium build. She was a rescue, so there was no way of knowing if her parents had it, too. On the other hand, weve seen some rather large German Sheps at the vets office i work at, and because the owners have researched the line integrity of their breeders, are dysplasia-free.

It really does depend on genetics, mostly, then nutrition and appropriate exercise when growing.

Yep you're right, people need to read. Here's from their About Us page

"We x-ray our dogs before breeding, either with preliminary x-rays
approved by our veterinarian or with a passing grade from the
Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and/or the University of
Pennsylvania's Hip Improvement Program (PennHIP) certification of
being free from degenerative joint disease (DJD). We are now also
certifying elbows through the OFA, TLI testing for exocrine pancreatic
insuffiency, our breeding males have been certified through the OFA to
be clear non-carriers of degenerative myelopathy (meaning regardless
of the females they are bred to, the pups will NOT have this disease),
and AKC DNA profiling. Individual health tests for each dog are posted
on their webpage along with size and weight stats."

I want Mina!
She's BEAUTIFUL!
I've been wanting a GS for 5-6 years now...I have no doubt that when I do get a puppy...it's gonna be a lil black GS baby, like Mina...:)
They are wonderful dogs..so smart, and loving, protective.
With me getting older, and eventually living alone, I think we would be a good fit.. :)
I'm a big dog person....my beloved Wonder Dog was a full sized rough Collie, and I have a 13 yr old Irish Setter right now.
I think going thru a reputable breeder is the key to having them live long healthy lives.
My Collie was 16 when he left me, and never had a health problem his whole life.
My Irish Setter has been the same way..never a problem.
LOL..when people come to visit me, they can't believe Danny Boy is 13 yrs. old...he runs these hills just like he did as a pup.
Get a healthy pup from a good breeder, give them plenty of love and good food, a nice place to live, and you'll have a wonderful companion for many, many years.. :)
I will say this about breeders...I've found that the Country folks that breed dogs on their big farms, have the healthiest puppies.
Both of the 2 dogs I spoke of, came from Farm Folks...not Show People/breeders.
I have come to find that the pups bred to work, are healthier than the show puppies...and more intelligent too.
Everyone believes Irish Setters to be ding-bats, because of what happened in the 70's/80's with the over/in breeding of the lines.
My Setter is Field Dog Stud Book registered, not a show dog. His whole family is 'hunting stock', so they never 'lost their intelligence' in the over/in breeding thing.
He isn't as hairy or as big as the show line, but he is still quite beautiful, and very smart... :)

ACTUALLY THAT IS FROM PURE GERMAN BLOODLINES

THEY HAVE FEWER HIP PROBLEMS OR NONE AT ALL

I OWNED ONE SHE HAD NO HEALTH PROBLEMS AND WAS THE BEST DOG I EVER HAD.

THE DYSPLASIA COMES FROM AMERICAN BREEDERS THAT TRIED TO ACCENUATE THE SLOPING HIPS WHICH IS WHAT CAUSES THE DYSPLASIA IN THE FIRST PLACE. (it screws up their spines)

THE GERMAN BLOODLINE IF YOU SEEN THEM STANDING HAS A VERY STRAIGHT BACK AND THEY ARE TALLER. (avg weight for a female is 110 lbs mine weighed 108)

LOOK AT A WOLF, NO SLOPING BACK VERY LONG LEGS FEWER HEALTH PROBLEMS. THEY ARE ALSO TALLER THAN YOUR AVG DOMESTIC DOG.

If not, they have obviously been bred for size. I have to wonder what kind of health problems they might have such as hip dysplasia and other joint problems.

My Great Pyrenees, originally a rescue from a puppy mill, was unfortunately bred for size. He pushed 200 pounds in his prime, he's now about 175 - it is a constant struggle to keep his weight down to take the load off his joints, poor guy. We've had to build sturdy ramps so he can still get into the cars and go for rides. He also has cataracts.

Taking into account this isn't a dog board, I won't reply to many of the completely uneducated posts in this thread. That breeder should be ashamed of themselves. The GSD is meant to be a working dog, dogs of that size can not possibly do the work the breed is meant to do. Those dogs would have no shot at passing a legitimate breed survey and aren't worth more than $100 in my opinion.

Here's what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would pay for many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace.

Anyway, breed them big as you can. A .22 is still an effective deterrent. Speaking from experience, If someone wants to get you, they will get you. I hope a dog (that can be shot, poisoned, neck broken SILENTLY) is not your first line of defense. You're making the day too easy for trained, motivated and ready would-be marauders.
