Quoting: celestial-chemist 18131262 I doubt that they do this. I had one - a German Shepherd/wolf hybrid. Went to shelter & asked for next dog being put down and they brought him out. He was all black, 150 lbs and very scary looking while at the same time very beautiful. I thought they'd be bringing out a small lab mix which are so common in the shelters. But if I hadn't have taken him he would have been put down. And so glad I did. His family had turned him in because he cost too much to feed at 10 mos. old! The shelter told me he was half wolf according to his previous family but didn't necessarily believe them because many people brag about such things. But vet confirmed it. He was the best dog I ever had in every way imaginable! He was loving & protective with family (inc. the cats), very gentle with kids, but definitely a fierce animal when needed to be. He was very intelligent and knew when to be fierce which wasn't too often. I had previously had German Shepherds and he had many traits of such only they were magnified. The only problem I ever had with him is that he was very destructive at first. He destroyed the garden & would even chew small trees down and the first time I left him in the house alone he made a big hole in the sheet rock. I had left him in house so he wouldn't destroy the cross-fenced yard around the house. He didn't like the feeling of being trapped. So we put in doggy doors, left the gate open to the small yard so he could get out to the rest of the property and let him roam our fenced 5 acres when we were gone. He was fine after that. Sounds like he was a nice dog! |

Anything other than the standard breed of German Shepherds as defined by the Germans themselves is not a German Shepherd they are Alsatians they are not thorough bred but different inbreeds. An Alsatian is a German Shepherd Dog. Some German Shepherd dogs have been bred for size although they cannot be shown because there size does not meet AKC standards. Other derivatives of the breed have developed over the years and the AKC does not currently recognize the three most closely related to the German Shepherd. They are Old World. They have Long Straight Backs. The Short Haired Ones with a slant to their stance are the ones to watch out for. Their hips do fall apart. The Old World Long Haired Shepherds are all together different. Some of my girls are 10 years old now and can still run like the wind. Very athletic dogs. Very loving and loyal. My girls are 70 to 90 lbs. Some of my males have gotten to be 140lbs. I have been breeding these guys for 18yrs. I have 5 generations. Sounds like you have nice dogs! Any updates on this? |

When I was a kid, back in the 60s, when there was no leash laws, our neighbors had one that was half wolf, that dog was beautiful and not only protected his owners but every kid in the neighborhood. If a stranger stopped to ask directions or anything, that dog would put himself in between the stranger and us kids in a warning manner. I have a German Shepherd now and she is the most loving dog we have, also have a Pekingese and an Australian Shepherd. The German Shepherd is the peace keeper of all the dogs. |

Poor dogs always end up crippled. If you want the perfect breed of dog you want one that is all kinds. Mutts are the best. Quoting: BarbiNot completely true. I have an Australian Shepard/Border Collie/ Blue Healer mutt, and she was just diagnosed with hip dysplasia in both ball-and-socket joints. She's only 7 months old, and small-medium build. She was a rescue, so there was no way of knowing if her parents had it, too. On the other hand, weve seen some rather large German Sheps at the vets office i work at, and because the owners have researched the line integrity of their breeders, are dysplasia-free. It really does depend on genetics, mostly, then nutrition and appropriate exercise when growing. Actually, hip dysplasia is purely genetic. Nutrition can only play a part in it to help with the governing of pain that the dog has due to the deterioration of the bone. You're definitely right about that though there are multiple factors involved with the disease. |

The angle of the wall between the mans legs doesnt look like it meets the far left wall at a 90* angle. Unless dude lives in a room with two acute and to obtuse corners. Rare for a dog to live that long In the end he just could not stand on his own Beautifully gentle dog with kids, women and small animals. If so much as a bee would go down on the walk he would stand near it a guard it. My daughter has a tiny dog, about 4 lbs. they made quite a pair. Rocky protected our pet lizard and ferrets. Geez I miss him The kids and I are still grieving our Rocky I will say if you are female it is a lot of dog to handle. When he lost the ability to stand it took three of us to lift him. |

The breeder is a power hungry leftist control freak loon who holds the cards and controls your ownership of these highly priced dogs. Additionally their two-year health guarantee is a joke as after two years if the animal develops hip dysplasia their non-requirement of return of the dog big whoop as by that time you have bonded with your dog and monies returned will do little to offset its healthcare costs of hip dysplasia. Further, the average lifespan of a typical German shepherd can be up to 13 years of age but this breeder does not list an average lifespan of these larger dogs If you wish to have, a large protector choose another breed that grows to a larger size naturally and the breeder does not take over your life at your expense.
