Re: They're gonna blow the levee
Another thing that is not looked at is this.... besides the value of the land (farmland) being greatly dimenished most all this ground is already planted in corn. If they flood this ground all this corn will be destroyed and the ground will remain flooded for a month or more. More likely two months. It will be to late to plant another crop on it.

So lets see. A farmer rents the ground around $250 an acre then he has corn on it which is another $360 an acre. So the farmer is out a really shiny and pretty nickle.

If just 100,000 acres of corn was flooded it will cost $61,000,000. This is not counting the value of the land itself which will take a huge hit. This ground has been selling for around $4000 an acre. So lets say you ruin a lot of the ground by getting the sand and silt all over it. lets say oh 40,000 acres will have its net worth cut in half. That's $80,000,000.

So your going to sacrifice $141,000,000 to save a town that's worth is only around $10 million if that.
 Quoting: Gabriel's Sword

$10 MILLION???

wtf

Did you look at the photos? I would PAY someone to erase that blight!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1360771

Well I was trying to be nice. tounge

Seeing is truly believing when you visit that town. That is why that Missouri politician said he would rather have Cairo flood.

 Quoting: Gabriel's Sword

I bet if you offered EVERY Cairo family $5000, they'd GLADLY leave...that would only cost about $5 million!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1360771

You are correct about this. At work the lady I work with and I got in an argument over this and I told her the exact same amount as you did in what I would offer the residents to leave that cess poole.
She told me I was crazy and I asked her how many times have you been their and she told me that she had never been their but told me about a time they were going to Missouri and crossed the Cairo bridge and ended up in a small town and looked abandoned. I told her that was Cairo and she told me that no it wasn't because it looked horrible. I said yep that's Cairo.

Re: They're gonna blow the levee
if you look at the link above you will see more details concerning the blasting...oh wtf here you go

Army Corps crews by Wednesday were laying the groundwork for the explosives, a liquid mix of sodium perchlorate — often used to make ammunition — and aluminum powder. Crews then pump the slurry into pipes embedded into the levee in 1,000-foot lengths — each separated by 60-foot gaps — and accessible through manhole-like holes known as "fuse plugs" that are cut into the embankment, said Jim Lloyd, the corps' operations leader in Memphis.

The corps would use blasting caps with C-4 plastic explosives to set off the slurry, fracturing the levee's top end enough that it would weaken, allowing the river to bust through it.

As floodwaters filled up the floodway over the next 24 to 36 hours, a slurry-filled barge would make its way down to the levee's lower end and its contents would be injected into piping. That section could then be blasted open, creating an outlet for the trapped water, Lloyd said.

Why?

What will blowing the levees do to correct the situation?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1360652

By blowing a hole in the levee it will allow water to escape from the river into who knows how many square miles of flatland, allowing the level of the river to drop and theoretically save people downriver who might otherwise be flooded.

...or it could be they are intentionally flooding the farm land to bring in new top soil. I read somewhere that due to all the over farming of the land the soil has lost its nutrients forcing farmers to use fertilizers we consume. Those can't be good for us.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1048618

This is what I don't know much about. What is silt? Apparently not good topsoil according to the MO folks. Is it clay?
 Quoting: oniongrass

Silt is a rich, dark in color earth that is rich in nutrients that makes for prime farming land. There can be a lot of mud involved though and it's a stinking mess to have to clean up if it's in your house or place of business.

We have been dealing with the ACOE (Regulatory Division) in Fairbanks AK
for almost a year now, over an issue which could have easily been resolved
in one or two meetings. They have dragged this out since May 5th, 2010,
have been as obstructionist as possible, and made mountains out of molehills,
all in the name of job security. It has been a real eye-opener for us.

Finally, when we were sure we had an absolutely airtight case, we told them
what they could do with their 'permitting process'. To be honest, I am
embarrassed for the Corps regarding how they treated us. They just kept
piling mistake on mistake, while forcing us to jump through every hoop in
the book while they themselves blatantly ignored their own regulations.

Can't speak for the Corps at large, but out local office does NOT know what
it is doing. At the expense of private business and landowners like us.

The ACOE is a branch of the military and it's pretty obvious.

2 years ago they gave the lowest possible safety rating possible out of the 3 to the levee that just breached this week in Poplar Bluff, MO., but didn't take steps to rectify the situation.

the US army corp of engineers destroyed the new orleans levee
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1344543

yes they blew holes in two places which floaded New Orleans the day after Hurricane Katrina... one hole near the 9th ward (poor folks) the other near the rich folks (which then gangs of oozie holding men came and stole from the rich)
they even had an article in the paper stating this fact then that article disapeard and they reversed the story... for the first and real story was about some citizens shooting two FEMA dudes responcible for the explosion, then ther reversed it to say two citizens were shot on the levee to cover it up...

I think this blowing up in this situation is nessecary and a well guided thing..... This area is getting plenty of water!!!

Cairo is upriver about 30 miles. Their is another levee that was breached just a bit ago just south of New Madrid in Tn. I think it has flooded 20 square miles or something like that.
Also they stopped the flow of the dams at Ky lake which was flowing around 1.2 million gal a sec. It is now backing up and flooding farmland in South central Tn. Ky lake ends up flowing into the Ohio right up from Paducah Ky.

What will solve this problem is to blow the levee at Cairo and have the Gov buy them out and move the town. It will be much cheaper than what they are proposing now. After all 300 white families who will lose their lively hood is worth it compared to around 2000 who sit on the front porch for a living.
If you have 130,000 acres out of production then a lot of people will be out of work besides all the farmers. All those communities rely on that grain to make a living.

If it was a slow flood from Iowa or Illinois then it would have some nice topsoil to be added. Most of the water is coming from the Ohio and it is very sandy. Since the water is going to be rushing out in a massive flood all those trees and sand and rocks are going to be out in everybodies farm or house.
Weather station is calling for another bout of rain this weekend.
