LOL All my kids live out of state and my friends think I'm nuts and hate the outdoors (which I LOVE) - but I love to play along creeks... just don't feel safe doing it alone. I'm trained as an EMT, but that won't do me much good if I have an accident and I'm all alone on a river. You're not far from me. I'm right on the Muskingum/Licking County border on I-70. What better fun and MAYBE profitable... than to get a group together and play in the mud ? Let's see how many we can get, and set up a time and place to meet. PICNIC TIME !!! Anybody in Ohio want to go Gold Panning with me?? - There's gold in Licking County and parts north of there !!! Here's some interesting info: Gold Panning in Ohio Ohio is a place where several gold deposits have been found and the first indications were obtained by gold panning. Gold can be found in primary vein deposits that were formed with silica igneous rocks. Gold deposits contain sulphides and the main type is pyrite and sometimes some beginners are used to confuse gold and pyrite. It is believed that gold is washed into streams and is concentrated by flowing waters to form secondary and placer deposits. Gold prospectors have developed their activities in Illinoian and Wisconsinan. The main zones are located in Illinoian, basically in Stonelick Creek, Brushy Fork and Wildcat Hollow. Most the time gold was recovered is in the form of tiny, flattened flakes. Among the best areas to search for gold flakes with a gold pan are those where gold was found some years ago. It is important to point out that there is a difference between hard rock and placer gold deposits, and some locations in Ohio have developed both types of gold deposits and the experience is the main tool employed to make a difference. Hard rock mining is the process of working mineral veins from the earth’s crust. Veins which carry gold or a variety of other precious metals are referred to as lodes, and are commonly associated with quartz. If we are working with hard rock, some material must be removed in order to get the rich vein. The idea is to take samples and evaluate the gold panning concentrate. It’s common to find very small particles of gold and the panning must be practiced carefully. Some gold prospectors recommend reducing the water movement. By using a magnet some magnetite particles can be concentrated and some fine gold particles may be trapped by magnetic particles. Then, our eyes must be educated in order to detect and recognize some minerals. In Ohio, most gold prospectors are basically interested in getting gold nuggets. This task is not impossible, but patient is a key element. It is well known that the main concentrator agent for gold is water and some particles of eroded gold will be transported and deposited down a hillside until they find their way into a river or any stream. The gold prospector must be able to detect the possible zones where the river takes a different direction. These points are the main areas to prospect. Then we have to take a gold pan in order to evaluate the gold locations. This is a fantastic adventure practiced in Ohio. The panning technique employs gravity concentration and separates the heavy gold and other minerals from the much lighter particles such as quartz and feldspar. The secret of gold panning is to practice as much as can be possible and manuals show the basic indications. The main value of prospecting gold in Ohio is to recover some particles of gold, and many people expend many hours of satisfying activity as weekend prospectors. They receive a reward, to recover gold in areas where few people was able to detect gold. It is important to indicate that some locations in the States are characterized by the formation of special gold deposits and Ohio has a special place for gold prospecting. ..."There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy."... Anybody in Ohio want to go Gold Panning with me?? - There's gold in Licking County and parts north of there !!! I search up in Lucas County. I`m an amateur geologist, love being outdoors and studying rocks. Been doing it for 14 years since I retired as a cop. My wife, doesn`t care for it but my sister does. Always have a nice time doing it. I like Ohio, people are friendly compared to my beloved Detroit where they eat their young. I understand your passion for it, at worse it`s a good day spent out with nature. A good cigar and a couple beers works for me, makes for a nice day. I love looking at the different types of rocks and gather them as I travel throughout the country. What I like about rocks are that they don`t get mouthie with me or want to spend my money in a shopping mall. I for one enjoy my solitude with the birds and animals....I move quietly with little or no footprints, like an Indian, I`m there but not seen. I find real rest alone with nature. Good luck on your venture. LEGION |
