No Gas in the SouthEast US
|
Anonymous Coward 8/31/2005 5:31 PM Report abusive post | No Gas in the SouthEast US
| Quote |
My roommate is a truck driver. He spoke with one of the gas distributors who told him that they had one more load of gas to deliver and then they would be out for at least two weeks.
If you need gas, buy it now. There won´t be any in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and parts of Tennessee.
I suppose I shouldn´t be surprised. The refineries that were supplying the Southeast were around New Orleans. I shouldn´t be surprised...yet I am. |

As a truck driver, my roommate delivers food to WalMart. He called me and was wondering if Wal Mart would be able to supply all their stores if the gas supply runs out in the South.
I told him I didn´t know. |

Oil companies are getting their first glimpse today of facilities battered by Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf of Mexico.
On a reconnaissance flight, Shell found damage to at least one of its facilities, its Mars platform, which it said "sustained topside damage" — the structure above the ocean housing controls, production equipment and quarters.
The company said it plans to send crews via helicopter today to several of its facilities to perform detailed inspections.
BP started helicopter flyovers of several of its facilities today, and so far, the news has been good.
"No damage was observed from these aerial overflights, but we´ll know more when we get the folks on board to complete their more detailed onboard inspections," said Hugh Depland, a spokesman for BP.
BP has already started to move small crews to some of its platforms. The crews will restart generators and inspect the facilities for damage prior to bringing them back on line.
The company did discover a mobile drilling rig that had become adrift and ended up next to its Holstein platform.
On Monday, there were reports of several rigs that had gone adrift. The rigs are often equipped with electronic locator devices so the companies can locate and retrieve them when they come free of their moorings.
Crews from drilling companies Noble and Transocean, which own two of the wayward rigs, are scheduled to fly out by mid-day to reestablish the rigs´ operating systems. Anchor vessels and tugboats have been deployed to the two drifting rigs to remove loose anchor lines and hook up the rigs to towing bridles.
The drilling companies plan to bring the rigs to shallow water or shipyards for repairs.
Exxon Mobil, Conoco, Apache Corp. are also inspecting their facilities.
Kerr-McGee said it has returned 50 workers to its facilities in the western Gulf, which was spared the brunt of the storm. The company expects to be able to today to restart half of the 130,000 barrel of oil a day production it shut down over the weekend.
"We´re ramping it up throughout the day," said John Christiansen, a Kerr-McGee spokesman.
In all, more than 92 percent of the Gulf´s oil output and 83 percent of its natural gas production was offline due to evacuations and shut downs completed in advance of the storm.
More than a quarter of the nation´s oil and gas comes from state and federal waters in the Gulf of Mexico. |

I am absolutely and totally serious.
I was TOLD this. Now...I´ll be the first to agree that rumors right now will be running hot...but a moments thought on the situation made me believe that it was at least possible. After all, the refineries in Louisiana are shut down. Most of the gas delievered in the South would probably not come from California. It makes sense to buy the fuel close to where it will be delivered.
After listening to what the Pres. said about gas disruptions, I believe that gas shortages are entirely possible. |

GAS around the corner is $3.09 today it was $2.58 last week, my sister in law just told me (20 mins ago) it was going up 9 cents a day for the next week. I´m heading out to fill up. She also said it was $2.85 across the river in Hampton.

Yeah, I was afraid of that. |

salimandr nli 12/8/2005 10:09 AM | | Re: No Gas in the SouthEast US | Quote | oh geez...not more of this.
"housing controls, production equipment and quarters." this is all repairable and you´d be surprised how quickly it will be repaired.
again, people out panic buying will definatley create shortages in areas. if you keep your head about you...buy when you need it rather than through fear...what´s the use...i´ve tried for days to hand out truth on this and people still want to believe "we´re doomed". we aren´t btw...each refinery has stock and backup...to go around...the refineries will be back up and some were already up and running in the gulf yesterday...get that? yesterday. also, pipelines can send to other areas if one area is totally out (which none is!) so...now pres bush opens the reserve...really not a great idea for the long run but it will probably please the doom and gloomers...you´ll pay later.
geez. |

Gis ... nli 12/8/2005 10:09 AM | | Re: No Gas in the SouthEast US | Quote | Just got a call from family in Okla north of OKC area. Station attendant said his company sent out email to all units in region this afternoon regarding shortages. He told that people from Louisiana are coming up into southern Okla and draining many stations in the se quadrant of state, mostly south of I-40. Some stations are closing with empty tanks.
In same region of northern Okla, the local stores are all sold out of 5 gallon gas cans. Older hardware store had ´em prieced at $16.99/can and they still sold out like hotcakes.
Another relation phoned earlier saying local noon news in Okla warned folks to prepare for gas prices around $5-6/gal by Labor Day weekend.
P/S --- Bush just told the whole nation in 4pm CDT speech that we are having a refinery crisis now starting with the hurricain disaster. They are doing some emergency EPA changes about rules, etc in order to help with this. |

exactly. everyone in atlanta (actually all over ga right now) is out filling everything they can (some stores are only allowing $10 max buy at $3.50/gallon) we are creating more of a crisis. |

For whatever that´s worth. IMO they are doing to little of everything too late. |

Anonymous Coward 12/8/2005 10:09 AM | | Re: No Gas in the SouthEast US | Quote | This is factual.
Just talked to our UPS driver. All UPS drivers have been ordered to fill up at gas stations. Normally they fill up at the UPS depot (this small one has a 10,000 tank reserve) but they have it locked down and are saving it. |

Anonymous Coward 12/8/2005 10:09 AM | | Re: No Gas in the SouthEast US | Quote | Yep, I was just listening to the radio and and gas is going at $5.57 in Atlanta. That must have been an old report as the above poster states $6.04.
D DAMN ! Going to go check local prices, brb. |

bp...british petroleum...owner of the vast majority of gulf refineries...
i´ll say it again...each refinery has storage and supply...pipelines can transfer the gas where needed...deja-vu.
geez. |

Anonymous Coward 12/8/2005 10:09 AM | | Re: No Gas in the SouthEast US | Quote | no gas might be helpfull to discourage people trying to get back into the area and try to save whats left from their houses
it was also on this local wwtv (or so) - that there is no or little gas left (145 miles in front of NO on a main road)
(could be a hoax to spread rumors - but on the other hand - everything looks so crazy there - who knows) |

Anonymous Coward 12/8/2005 10:09 AM | | Re: No Gas in the SouthEast US | Quote | Just checked the prices in SC a little over $3.00 still not too bad compared to $6.00. I find it ironic that just a few weeks ago people were loudly complaining to the cashiers were they buy gas, one guy was even killed over the high price of gas which was around $2.70 then. Now they´re lined up and eager to fork it over.
Idiots |

Salimander, I don´t doubt what you say is true but!
Do you really think BP will release it if they think they can drive up the price (read profit)? |
