Nuclear or ionizing radiation (even in low levels) can affect your body in a number of different ways, and the adverse health effects of extreme radiation exposure may not be apparent for many years. These effects can range from mild results, such as skin color change, to permanent genetic alterations. Many of the isotopes we are tracking are also known carcinogens, known to cause cancer in humans and animals. The results that are experienced due to radiation exposure will entirely depend on the amount of radiation the body absorbs (the dose), the type of radiation exposed to, the route of exposure (the susceptibility of the tissue), and the length of time over which exposed.

While it is my opinion that we will not see high-level radiation exposure in the United States, I do understand and respect the danger of low-level radiation in our environment.

Through biomagnification, the concentration of a chemical in the animal at the top of the food chain may be high enough to cause death or adverse effects on behavior, reproduction, or disease resistance and thus endanger that species, even when levels in the water, air, or soil are low.
