Order of operations

PEMDAS

parentheses

exponents

multiplication and division

addition and subtraction

when two operations are of the same rank they are done left to right.

So first do parentheses leaving you...

6 divided by 2(3)

since the only thing left is multiplication and division you now go left to right.

six divided by 2 = 3

and three times three = nine.

The confusion seems to be from the fact that people believe that each individual letter of PEMDAS is done in that order. In which case multiplication would come before the division. But this is not so. Multiplication and division is done left to right.

well let's see... it we take 8 and add it after it's subtracted and then place a 1 at each end only to subtract 2 in the beginning before I came here... then the answer would be 52-43

6/2*(1+2) comes out as 9 for me and my computerness.

Try yourself:
Open your console in Chrome and type
"alert(6/2*(1+2));"

Excel 2007 gives me 9 as well.

I have always used BODMAS [link to www.mathsisfun.com]

from that link:

B - Brackets first
O - Orders (ie Powers and Square Roots, etc.)
DM - Division and Multiplication (left-to-right)
AS - Addition and Subtraction (left-to-right)

PEMDAS

6÷2(1+2)
P - 6÷2(3)
E - there are none
MD - 6÷2(3)= 3(3) = 9

Answer is 9

It IS a trick question because the arithmetic layout is ambiguous.

6÷[2(1+2)] = 1

(6÷2)(1+2) = 9

It's not a difficult problem, it's just laid out wrong.

The question is deliberately ambiguous and that people get different answers is of no surprise.

Why is this so difficult for people? I'm fairly dyslexic, but I have still managed to do allot of mathematics and physics in college etc. This is very sad that such a simple operation is essentially impossible for many people.
