Re: Math: 6÷2(1+2) = ?
9

Using the order of precedence for calculators and computers, that is..

6÷2(1+2) = ?

step 1, parenthesis

6/2*(3)

step 2, proceed left to right: / has same precedence as *

3*(3)

step 3, final multiplication

9

The only way you can get 1 is if * has a higher order
of precedence than /, which is not true in most computer
languages.

Changing the original problem to 6/2*(3) will yield 9. This is correct.

BUT, the equation we are working with is 6÷2(1+2) which yields 1.
 Quoting: Syrius

Sorry, but that's incorrect. 6/2*(1+2) is exactly the same as 6/2(1+2), or in english, 6 divided by 2 * (1 + 2). In parantheses first, then left to right in order of precendence. It doesn't matter if there is an actual * symbol or not, it still infers multiplication.

6÷2(1+2) = 9

Rule 1: First perform any calculations inside parentheses.
Rule 2: Next perform all multiplications and divisions, working from left to right.
Rule 3: Lastly, perform all additions and subtractions, working from left to right.

Rule 1: First perform any calculations inside parentheses.
6÷2(1+2)

Rule 2: Next perform all multiplications and divisions, working from left to right.
6÷2(3)
6<Left ÷ Right>2(3)
3(3) = 9

It doesn't get easier than that. I don't know what you don't understand.

Alright one more attempt for that bad kid who call this HORSE SHIT

using distributive property again to get rid of that pest 2 in-front of the ()'s

6÷2(1+2)=2(3÷(1+2))=2(3÷(3)) = 2(1)=2

Ops now its 2, crap. Quick erase erase erase.... Bad example!

I ask again:

What exactly does 2(1+2) mean to you?

is it not always (2+4) ?

why does it suddenly change to (1+2) because there is 6/ in front of it?

You must see 2(1+2) as a unity

Rule 3: Lastly, perform all additions and subtractions, working from left to right.
