The question is not ambiguous. There is only one possible way to read it and the answer is 9.

Alright, there's a lot of self-proclaimed experts around these parts. Let's see how your logic holds up against some basic mathematics.

6÷2(1+2) = ?

I'll give two hints. This is NOT a trick question, and there is only 1 correct answer.

All tools used for computation are fair game.

(Yes, I saw this somewhere else and decided to post it here.)

Best of luck to all you geniuses .

Bracket - 1+2=3
Indicies - NA
Multiplication - 2x3=6
Division - 6 / 6 = 1
Addition - NA
Subtraction - NA
Answer = 1.

Math thinks infinity and zero can be used in calculations, that's why math is gay.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, whatever, but Math is just a simulation of purest pinkness, trust me.

I hold one elephant in my left hand and one cockroach in my right hand, why is my right hand so enormous?

Basically, how can you strip the ONEness (the unit-ness) that describes an elephant and apply that value to a cockroach?

Surely, there's a scalar misfit?

Or is that just me?

Re: Math: 6÷2(1+2) = ?
Google is reading the equation as (6/2)(1+2)

Notice, the one I put is up: 6÷2(1+2)

Now, I'm not a programmer, but I'll venture a guess as the script doesn't allow for equations of this magnitude to be processed correctly. Therefore, it's creating it's own version, one that exists within the parameters of its script.

No need for hostility. You're only proving what I previously stated. It's reading the equation as (6/2) = [Fraction] x (1+2)... When it's 6 Divided By 2(1+2).

Yes, I would like an apology.

Re: Math: 6÷2(1+2) = ?
if you follow the correct order

1) brackets first(!)
2) then multiplication
3) then division
4) then addition
5) then subtraction

there is only one outcome:

1. (one)

If you believe 2 comes before 1 then it´s 9, but that´s wrong.

Will we have a question of this type every month now from now on, only with slightly different numbers?

last months correct answer was 288 (can anybody remember?)
this months correct answer is 9 (was found within only a few seconds after the OP and I guess the thread will still continue for at least 42 more pages)

What will be the numbers for next month? Any predictions anyone?

If you want to be technical, it would look like this: 6÷[2(1+2)]

Re: Math: 6÷2(1+2) = ?
people who answered 9 should go back to school. the final operation is not 3*3=9, it's 3/3=1. that sign with the two dots above and below the dash means division, not multiplying.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1368063

Oops, and people wonder why we have third world countries.

Multiplication and division are the same operation and are performed "simultaneously" in an abstract sense. OR Performed LEFT TO RIGHT as written.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1309528

No they're not. "Simultaneously in an abstract sense"?? What kind of idiot bullshit is that?????

Division is done FIRST. PERIOD!!!

Proof that you have to evaluate division first:

3*4/5*6

If you incorrectly evaluate multiplication first you get:

3*4/5*6
12/30
.4

If you correctly evaluate division first you get:

3*4/5*6
3*.8*6
14.4

.4 is NOT 14.4!

Order of operations bitches! Don't forget it!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1367296

WOW quite the response, multiplication and division are the same operation and happen at the same time.

Re: Math: 6÷2(1+2) = ?
and parenthesis inside of parenthesis are quite common in a scientific environment. it just shows the flow of operations. you start with the inner most parenthesis and work your way out.

in your problem: 6÷2(1+2)

you MUST first solve the equasion between brackets, there is simply no other way if you read algebra rules.

so your problem becomes: 6÷2*3

Then according to order of operations you MUST multiply first

so your problem becomes: 6÷6

which translates in the only correct response: 1.

No debate nor arguments possible.
