Anonymous Coward User ID: 1331178 United States 05/03/2011 07:52 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Order of operations PEMDAS parentheses exponents multiplication and division addition and subtraction when two operations are of the same rank they are done left to right. So first do parentheses leaving you... 6 divided by 2(3) since the only thing left is multiplication and division you now go left to right. six divided by 2 = 3 and three times three = nine. The confusion seems to be from the fact that people believe that each individual letter of PEMDAS is done in that order. In which case multiplication would come before the division. But this is not so. Multiplication and division is done left to right. |

Rule 2: Next perform all multiplications and divisions, working from left to right. Rule 3: Lastly, perform all additions and subtractions, working from left to right. that's right, so it's fucking 9 you bitches! |

Dark Zen User ID: 1353023 United States 05/03/2011 07:56 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | well let's see... it we take 8 and add it after it's subtracted and then place a 1 at each end only to subtract 2 in the beginning before I came here... then the answer would be 52-43 Thank you Thank you I am smart and good looking... not to mention...modest ! Here is a great pic of me giving a speach... Last Edited by Dark Zen on 05/03/2011 07:57 AM |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 13670999 ffs I have always used BODMAS [link to www.mathsisfun.com] from that link: B - Brackets first O - Orders (ie Powers and Square Roots, etc.) DM - Division and Multiplication (left-to-right) AS - Addition and Subtraction (left-to-right) |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1309528 United States 05/03/2011 08:04 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It IS a trick question because the arithmetic layout is ambiguous. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 13680466÷[2(1+2)] = 1 (6÷2)(1+2) = 9 It's not a difficult problem, it's just laid out wrong. The question is deliberately ambiguous and that people get different answers is of no surprise. You are retarded, its not a trick, its the rules of math, short notation maybe, but certainly fair game for second or third grade. |

Let's see how your logic holds up against some basic mathematics. Quoting: Syrius6÷2(1+2) = ? I'll give two hints. This is NOT a trick question, and there is only 1 correct answer. All tools used for computation are fair game. (Yes, I saw this somewhere else and decided to post it here.) Best of luck to all you geniuses . 9 |

patmac User ID: 1130776 United States 05/03/2011 08:07 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This is the best GLP social experiment I've ever seen. Well done! 1.) OP posts an initial question 2.) Correct answer is given within the first 3 posts 3.) Everyone continues to call eachother an idiot, wrong answers are given 4.) An argument about the process is discussed 5.) Someone goes to google 6.) Everyone then switches their answer to what google says 7.) The arguing continues on for several more pages Nice. |
