2

288

hay that is on another forum as a problem!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 12805141

Yes I admit I got lazy and pulled their numbers to word my problem.

Unfortunately no one on that forum thought to make it a word problem.

And oddly enough a physics forum is split 50/50 as to the 2 or 288 which is the same as our 1 or 9

 Quoting: NightWisp

correct so how did you get 9 for the OP?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16720242

6 divided by 2 =3 x 1+2 + 3 so 3 x 3 =9

oh I see... 6 / 2(3) = 6 /6 = 1

my bad.

9 would look like this...

( 6 / 2 ) * (2+1)

Not

6 / 2(1+2)

or as I posted it is

6

2(1+2)

not

If it were written that way, yes 1 would be the answer, but it is not, hence left to right and 9.

Algebraically, 2(9+3) is an inseparable quantity. That's to say that the distributive property of multiplication would make it so (2*9 + 2*3) which = 24.

The kid in this video is correct. Once you listen to the PEMDAS review, you will understand. Who ever wrote the equation has not properly communicated in the language of math. The equation is faulty.

Re: Math: 6÷2(1+2) = ?
The answer is 1 and I will prove it!

I will substitute variables into the brackets so it becomes

6/2(x+y)

simplifying the equation it becomes

6/(2x+2y)

divide numerator and denominator by 2 yields

3/(x+y)

put your values in for x and y yields

3/(1+2)

3/3 = 1

Re: Math: 6÷2(1+2) = ?
The multiplication before division applies to each statement , 3(1+2)is its own statement so left to right doesn't work

six divided by 2x3 equals

six divided by 6 equals

6/1 X 1/6 equals

6/6 equals

You can also use foil

6/2(1+2)=
2(1)=2 2(2)=4
2+4=6

6/6=1

In the order of operations, multiplication does NOT come before division. Which ever one comes first going from left to right is the problem you solve first. Therefore the answer is 9.

This is simple fucking math people.

Patrick will sleep well with the knowledge that so many people are not at his level. Do any of you math majors know the answer to:

What is the square root of 4?

Just checking some basics.
