Re: Math: 6÷2(1+2) = ?
I love this meme.. the '1ers' are so effective in their shilling.

The answer is obviously 9

BEDMAS- Brackets, Exponents, Division/Multiplication, Addition/Subtraction

Division and multiplication are done in the order of which they appear in the equation after each calculation. Ditto with Addition/subtraction.

6÷2(2+1)

Step 1: Brackets

6÷2(3)

Step 2: There are no exponents

Step 3: Division/Multiplication

Now, this is where the 1'ers have their fun. For some reason, they think 2*3 is the next calculation. Some of them will even say, "everything in the brackets", well, all that is left in the brackets is 3. I don't know how this is anything other than a meme, an intentional joke by many-a people.

the next calculation, 6÷2, equals 3

3(3)

Step 4: Division/Multiplication

When a number is next to brackets, they are to be multiplied, after the operations inside the brackets are complete of course.

9!

For some reason, the 1'ers perceive the equation as

6÷(2(2+1)) -- In which case, the 2*3 operation would be completed, as it IS within brackets.

I don't understand the "1" joke. I can only understand cancer, and those who will get are the ones who believe the answer is "1".

I tried explaining that earlier to them as well. Have shown links with it typed into a calc, have shown links of college profs showing the answer. Talk about leading sheep to water... But for real now, lol, movie time.

haha ok, if you took the level of math you did than check you work.. work it backwards.

tell me how 9 actually works there?

you realize in an equation this, 2(3), goes first because of the parentheses, right? Parentheses first.
 Quoting: FaithNoMore

You must be high to not get 9 and still act like you followed the rules.
 Quoting: Patrick Bateman

I will right it out one more time for ya. Of course because you can't check your work.

6/2(1+2)= now watch this next step... simple math.

2x(1+2)=6 See how I did that? checking my work.

2x(3)=6

6x=6

x=1

If the answer is 9, check your work and show me.

Now you know why you don't have college algebra professors help with 6th grade math.

"The problem as it is written is 6÷2(1+2) , the ÷ cannot be substituted with a fraction bar because they have different ranks on the order of operations."

Now where did he come up with that?

You arrive at 1 when the equation is:

6/[2(1+2)]= 1

Buttttttt, that is not how it is written.

No, you idiot. You can solve an equation that is not flawed to get the correct answer. This is flawed as in poorly written, but to answer it the way it is, 9 is the correct answer.

You obviously can not show your work. Just give me links. And I am the idiot? Rightttt.......

Lol, the proper work has been shown over and over again.
 Quoting: Patrick Bateman

No, It has not. I asked you to show me how you checked your work. You must of checked your work. Show me how you checked it. Not with links. With your "head" and show us on here how you did it. You can not just do an equation and say I followed order of operation and I am good now.. haahahha You must also check it. The flaw most people have in their work. Show me how you checked it.

Re: Math: 6÷2(1+2) = ?
You arrive at 1 when the equation is:

6/[2(1+2)]= 1

Buttttttt, that is not how it is written.

Got a word problem that will back up 9 as an answer?

It really needs to be useful though and make sense to a 6th grader.

I am unsure how a simple narrative would explain this problem. Do you have one for 1? I have indicated that by simply communicating the equation a little differently than written will bring you to 1 that you want.

2 people have one apple each and get two more each

They want to evenly divide their combined apples to 6 people so how many apples does each person get?

Nice, but is it possible that you have 6 people entering the arena to do battle. Three will die and the victors will each receive 3 apples.

I am still waiting for someone to mention that my chicken dinner word problem was a technical failure but it served the purpose.
