morons its 1

you can get 1 in more ways than 9

6/2(1+2)=
6/2+4=
6/6=1
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16960047

This is simple math. Where are the variables?
However if this was 6/2(1+2x) then you could use the FOIL method easily enough. We are only dealing with the simple order of operations here.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 14090804

true. There are unsolved math and physics problems out there. So i dont know if the answer is one or nine. I just wanted the fruit and vegetables...lol. Nine just makes more sense but i am sure the computer programmers are laughing at this thread so basic for so many pages.

Re: Math: 6÷2(1+2) = ?
Haven't read all the previous pages but when solving an equation
one uses BODMAS.
This is an acronym for
B.......Brackets
O.......Of
D.......Division
M.......Minus
A.......Addition
S.......Subtraction

So, first the Brackets..1+2=3
now we have 6/2x3
now the "of" which is 2x3=6
now we have 6/6
Do the Division and 6 divided by 6=1
Q.E.D.
 Quoting: omar

almost right..

Rule 1: First perform any calculations inside parentheses.
Rule 2: Next perform all multiplications and divisions, working from left to right.
Rule 3: Lastly, perform all additions and subtractions, working from left to right.

6÷2(1+2) = ?
6÷2*(3) = ?
6÷2 = 3 * 3 = 9
 Quoting: eclectic mind

Yes, but you do the multiplication FIRST.
That's the rule.

The answer is 1.
 Quoting: MrZephyros

nope.. both multiplications and divisions are both done in step two.. but the order is working from left to right..
if the equation was (1+2)6÷2 = ? then it would be 9 as well..
(1+2) = ?
(3)*6÷2 = ?
(3)*6 = 18÷2 = 9

the only problem some make is working from left to right!

Re: Math: 6÷2(1+2) = ?
Read in English the term is read the quantity six divided by the product of 2 and the sum of one plus two.

The factors in the Numerator are 1, 2, 3 and 6
The factors in the Denominator are 1, 2, 3 and the term (1+2)

Prime factorization for Numerator: 1*2*3
Prime factorization for Denominator: 1*2*(1+2) you

Eliminating common prime factorization we are left with

3/(1+2) = 1

The reason it is not 9 is that the TERM (1+2) has not been included in the calculation, rendering it incorrect.

Yes the answer is 1 as written.

It would need to be written differently for it to follow the stated rules and answer 9

"2 people have one apple each and get two more each

They want to evenly divide their combined apples to 6 people so how many apples does each person get?"

Would be a would be a word problem to match 6÷2(1+2)=

The other example

"6 people entered an arena to do battle and half are killed.

The three victors receive one apple from the Queen and two apples from the King.

How many apples were awarded?"

Would match 6/2(1+2)=

Alright, there's a lot of self-proclaimed experts around these parts. Let's see how your logic holds up against some basic mathematics.

6÷2(1+2) = ?

I'll give two hints. This is NOT a trick question, and there is only 1 correct answer.

All tools used for computation are fair game.

(Yes, I saw this somewhere else and decided to post it here.)

Best of luck to all you geniuses .

Dammit.

Came in here thinking 1, but the 9s are right, you do Division and Multiplication in the same step, left to right.

a÷b(c) = ?

You do the multiplication of the parenthesis first.

a÷b(c) = a÷[bxc]

So ..

6÷2(1+2) =

6÷2(3) =

6÷[2x3] =

6÷6 =

1

This is a basic rule of arithmetic in almost all countries.
