So if you divide by 2(1+2) on one side, do it to the 1 also.

You get 1 = 1/6

That is not how you check to see if your answer is correct.



if it equals 1, then you should be able to put the 1 in for x And it will work out even on both sides.

it does not work in any situation but 9.

Nope, dont need to know the results before hand. I came up with 9 long before I checked my work.

That is the nice thing about math. You can always plug in your answer and check your work. Pretty simple concept really.


Still havent answered my question though.

All 2(3) means is
6÷2x3
Now the HARD part, from left to right( because division and multiplication are the same!!!)

OK, because most of you make the mistake of "simplifiaction", it's 1, not 9.

6÷2(1+2) =

6÷2(3) =

Tricky part: the numerator after simplifications stays as is, that is

3÷(3) = 1

The same equation was a tricky question back in my years in Gymnasium. And yes, although the majority of the students got 9, the mathematician told as that both 1 and 9 are correct.

And no I was never good at math...

Did it with my "scientific calculator" and it gave 1 and 9.

After putting the denominator in brackets it gave 1.

Seems I do the calculation having the above written as

___6__
2(1+2)

Fail, there is nothing here... is it just a coincidence?
