Corps delays third breach after exhausting explosives supply

Wednesday, May 4, 2011
By Scott Moyers ~ Southeast Missourian

"SIKESTON, Mo. -- A third levee breach planned for Tuesday is being delayed by at least 24 hours because the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers used too much of the explosives on the first two detonations and do not have enough for the third breach yet, corps officials said at a news conference Tuesday evening.

Col. Vernie Reichling, who heads the corps' Memphis District, said they discovered the "potential issue" Monday night after executing the first breach at Birds Point in Mississippi County. The problem was exacerbated Tuesday after the second blast near New Madrid, Mo.

"We saw that we were potentially using more of the slurry mix than we had anticipated," Reichling said. "This comes as we are executing a plan that was hatched 30-some years ago and we are implementing it for the first time. So there has been a learning curve."

Matthew Patrick--" Well they havent anwsered my question about caruthersville and points south. Just wanting to know their opinion on the rising water down here. It will be record breaking, 49.5 ft, at 50 ft it tops the floodwall, not to mention if it can withstand the pressure! I know everyone is in mess, just wanting some accurate info from the professionals. Local authorities wont give info".5-3-11

Anthony Smith ‎@ April Atkins." Theyre not gonna tell u till it hits 50 ft. I've tried and tried to get answers from people and all I hear is 50 ft. The COE doesnt need to blow the 3rd section cause it's working fine now, but they still will. The river has hardly risen in 24 hours and do to the planning of the 3rd breach the level predictions have went back up again. No need in it."

Christian Shorez--" can you update what is going on in haiti and cruthersville and near portageville is this caused by something by the levee blast or is there another site to look at?"

Christian Shorez--" I dont know if its rumor or fact i herd on the police scanner about flooding issues in Caruthersville haiti and also in or around Potageville but my questions keep getting deleted and i find that to be very much like either the levee breach may have caused a issue or army core may be avoiding certian questions

Lauren Mays-Sells--" Saw on KFVS12 where the 3rd explosion won't be at 10 as originally planned, but will more than likely be in the evening sometime?

"The "slurry mix" is a liquid mix of sodium perchlorate -- often used to make ammunition -- and aluminum powder. The amount used by the corps also may answer questions from people, some in different states, who said they felt the blasts Monday night from nearly a hundred miles away."

"Maj. Gen. Michael Walsh, president of the Mississippi River Commission and the man who ordered the execution of the plan, said they had acquired more of the explosives shortly before 6 p.m. Tuesday but that it would take 24 hours for it to arrive. Walsh said the third detonation, which would create a second 5,500-foot outflow area, would take place today."

"Walsh said that they had used more than 150 tons of explosives for the first two breaches, the second which took place near New Madrid, just after 12:30 p.m. Tuesday. Reichling said that after the second blast came Tuesday, he ordered an "operational pause."

"That not only will allow time for the additional explosives to arrive but will give his crew of about 150 corps members time to rest."

"Fatigue has been a factor," Reichling said. "Some of our people have worked 24 to 36 hours straight. They've been working with high explosives, and there is a concern for safety. We have been constantly adjusting to conditions. The conditions Mother Nature threw at us was severe."

"The Birds Point-New Madrid Floodway plan is intended to create inflow and outflow breaks in the levee system to move river water across 200 square miles of Southeast Missouri farmland, largely in Mississippi County. The first breach floods the land and the second two allow the water to flow back into the Mississippi River. The detonation Tuesday creates one outflow for the water, and both Walsh and Reichling said Tuesday that not immediately having a third would not create a problem."

Missouri levee blast eases threat to Illinois town

The dramatic, late-night demolition of a huge earthen levee sent chocolate-colored floodwaters pouring onto thousands of acres of Missouri farmland Tuesday, easing the threat to a tiny Illinois town being menaced by the Mississippi River.

But the blast near Cairo, Ill., did nothing to ease the risk of more trouble downstream, where the mighty river is expected to rise to its highest levels since the 1920s in some parts of Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana.

"We're making a lot of unfortunate history here in Mississippi in April and May," said Jeff Rent, a spokesman for the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency. "We had the historic tornados, and now this could be a historic event."

The Army Corps of Engineers was considering making similar use of other "floodways" - enormous basins surrounded by giant levees that can be opened to divert floodwaters.

A staccato series of explosions lit up the night sky Monday over the Mississippi with orange flashes and opened a massive hole in the Birds Point levee. A wall of water up to 15 feet high swiftly filled corn, soybean and wheat fields in southeast Missouri.

Upstream at Cairo, which sits precariously at the confluence of the swollen Mississippi and Ohio rivers, preliminary readings suggested the explosion worked.

But across the river, clearing skies gave a heartbreaking view of the inundation triggered by the demolition. The torrent swamped an estimated 200 square miles, washing away crop prospects for this year and damaging or destroying as many as 100 homes.

"You have four of the five major natural-gas pipelines come right through the soup in New Madrid, the soft alluvial soil," says Gray. Try to explain to somebody why you cannot heat a nursing home or keep a hospital warm."

An earthquake in the middle of the country, along the precarious New Madrid fault, could have enormous fiscal and energy consequences. "Virtually every natural gas pipeline in the nation is built over that fault," Geller says. "You'll see the explosion reflected off the moon."

So now they've let the water into the former farmland, but they're delaying the blast that will let it drain back into the riverbed near New Madrid?

So it'll make a nice big lake inside Missouri?

If they had a target for the area in Missouri that would be flooded, and the river isn't rising as fast as expected, that area could take longer to flood, hence the delay in allowing drainage back into the riverbed.

Makes sense?

It is a lame fucking excuse that they ran out of ammo.

When planning an engineering operation, one would expect them to plan for that and know how much slurry mix they had available or could make.

"Oops the dog ate my homework." Same kind of transparent excuse we get with the false flag ops at the international level.

Flood unease builds south along the Mississippi

“The floooding is prompting more evacuations and unease as the Army Corps of Engineers weighs whether to purposely inundate more land with water.”

“The breach of southeastern Missouri's Birds Point levee was heralded by some Illinois towns along the Ohio River as a needed relief from record flooding. The man who ordered that action says he may do the same with other Mississippi River spillways as flood prospects mount.”

“Downstream - in southeast Missouri, Kentucky, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana - concerns are growing as the Mississippi River continues to rise.”

~~~~I don't think the 3rd blast coming up will be the last.....
Lawsuit seeking damages for area farmers because of levee breach
Terry and Mary Beth Lee's farm stands -- or stood -- on the land that her great-great-grandfather settled more than 200 years ago. Her dad worked the fields beneath Birds Point levee up until he and his wife died within three months of each other in 1993, the year of the last 100-year flood.
"We vowed to them before they died that we were going to go to the farm and build a house there," Mary Beth Lee said.
Today, two centuries and a way of life are underwater after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer's detonations late Monday and Tuesday breached the levee at Birds Point.
And what could prove to be a lengthy legal battle against the U.S. government is beginning.
On Tuesday morning, Cape Girardeau-based Cook, Barkett, Ponder and Wolz LC filed a lawsuit in a Washington, D.C., federal court seeking unspecified damages for the farmers and property owners in the spillway flooded out by the levee's breach. Later in the day, lawyers met with more than 80 residents of the floodway and surrounding areas and members of the media at the Clara Drinkwater Newnam Library in Charleston, Mo., to discuss the suit.
The civil action claims the property owners' Fifth Amendment rights prohibiting a government taking without just compensation have been violated by the corps' detonation of the levee system in Mississippi and New Madrid counties. The litigation, which includes 25 claimants, seeks class-action status. J. Michael Ponder, partner at the law firm, said the litigation counters the claims of the corps that the Army has the proper easements in the spillway to operate the project and flood about 130,000 acres.
Farmland 0, Cairo 1 (Second Update)~~~~(Some great photos with this article)~~~and comments
May 1st, 2011
Monday night, they finally did it. The Army Corp of Engineers blew the levees at Birds Point in Southeast Missouri, flooding 200 square miles of Missouri’s best farmland. The farms - those silly patches of black dirt where we produce the food that keeps us alive - were sacrificed in order to save the tiny town of Cairo, Illinois.
The lawsuit claims that 5th Amendment rights are at stake, which offer legal protection for landowners before government can take private property. According to an article that appeared this afternoon on the PR Newswire, the cataract of water is flowing onto the farms at the rate of 550 feet per second, and (as one would imagine), it’s causing catastrophic consequences.
According to Monday’s Southeast Missourian, flood levels in Cairo reached historic highs on Monday night when the gauge hit 61 feet, shattering old records set 74 years ago. In February 1937, the rivers rose to 59.5 feet in Cairo, Illinois. Think about that for a moment. This flood of 2011 is breaking all known records.
The blown levees are good for Cairo; bad for the farmland in Missouri which experts say will be ruined for years. Midwestern farmland owes its fertility to those spring-time floods of yore, but this is not the way Mother Nature does things. When those levees were blown, that 15-foot wall of water brought with it sand and river-laden debris and all manner of pollutants found in flood waters. Experts predict it could take years for the farms to become productive again.
The Chicago Tribune reported that crops have already been planted on some of these farms that are now being inundated with this “man-made tsunami,” destroying the crops and causing hundreds of thousands of dollars of damage to the local farmers. In addition, as many as 100 homes could be destroyed by this plan.
