I think what OP means by authority over others also could mean "teaching".

For example I know how to make a given widget, I would be the authority over those who did not know how to make that given widget. He explained it a while back.

I believe this to be true. Consider "Jonbenet Ramsey", or any "news" story that is played over and over in the media.

If it is a planned ritual killing it is meant to have media coverage to achieve the desired result.
