I think the basic substance of all rituals is intent.

I agree with that. Chris states rhythm is indispensable though. A drum or a mantra or music. Also, a ceremonially separated space. A circle or a square. A time of begining signaled and a time to end. With a solid framework in the invisible, you can attract spirits.

But sometimes intent is enough by itself, preferably when you are alone. The rest is for secluding a collective in time and space. Unless people know you began the ritual, they will not mentally participate and the spirits do not come.

A couple questions if I may.

When you do spells and rituals, do you go by a book, or do you ad lib some spells as you go along to include some your own personal feelings/emotions?

I know there are many books of spells, but if it is a book, is it a particular one that anyone who practices can obtain, or is it a book just for certain higher-ups?

My Life Partner and I are thinking of relocating to the North Georgia Mountains, Blue Ridge/Ellijay area. Do you feel that it is a good area to get away from the rat race of big cities?
