Serious Discussion: What is Consciousness?
The individual unit of consciousness.

Humans are conscious, animals and insects are conscious, even plants and trees are conscious to some degree.

Some people feel consciousness is just a combination of chemicals, and that when you die your consciousness is gone.

This is an attempt to get a good discussion going on consciousness.

Do you think science will ever "create" consciousness via combination of chemicals?

Or do you think Chemicals come from Life?
"A sense of common interest can be fostered among individuals, if they know that they are inter-connected, are parts of one Organic System and are the sons and daughters of one Father. Here is the task of all religions; to teach people that all beings of the world are closely inter-related. Although steadfastness or firm belief in God (Nistha) according to some particular faith and eligibility of the individual is congenial for healthy spiritual growth of every individual, religious bigotry which begets enmity is condemnable, as it is against the real interest of the individual and society. Real religion teaches love for one another. Lord Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu propagated the cult of all-embracing Divine Love which brings universal brotherhood on a transcendental plane.

(Srila Bhakti Dayita Madhava Maharaja )

"If one loves Krishna, he must love Lord Jesus also. And if one perfectly loves Jesus he must love Krishna too. If he says, "Why shall I love Krishna? I shall love Jesus," then he has no knowledge. And if one says, "Why shall I love Jesus? I shall love Krishna", then he has no knowledge either. If one understands Krishna, then he will understand Jesus. If one understands Jesus, you'll understand Krishna too"

No kind of consciousness is the ultimative subject, the Source of all. Any consciousness manifested needs some vehicle for it, e.g. chemicals. Consciousness is still part of duality hence cannot be the Source of all.

Consciousness, and being? Are they the same? What is the difference?

I am not my thoughts. My thoughts are my consciousness. What am I? Am I my body? Am I my mind? Am I my heart? What? It is unknown.

Banish all thoughts. Are you still you? Are you? Are? You? Being? Not? Ah.

Some philosophers attempt to explain consciousness directly in neurophysiological or physical terms, while others offer cognitive theories of consciousness whereby conscious mental states are reduced to some kind of representational relation between mental states and the world.

Re: Serious Discussion: What is Consciousness?
The Bhagavad-gita says, avinasi tu tad viddhi yena sarvam idam tatam: "Consciousness is that which is spread all over your body, and it is eternal." How is consciousness eternal? That you can understand by practical experience. In your childhood you were conscious, in your boyhood you were conscious, in your youth you were conscious, and as you progress to old age you will be conscious. So your body is changing, but your consciousness continues unchanged. This you cannot deny. Therefore the Bhagavad-gita says, na hanyate hanyamane sarire: [Bg. 2.20] "Consciousness is eternal. It is not vanquished with the destruction of the temporary body."

As soon as there is no consciousness in the body, the body is dead. Then what is consciousness? It is the symptom of the presence of the soul. Just as a fire situated in one place distributes heat and light everywhere, the spirit soul present in your body spreads consciousness all over your body. This is a fact.

From your childhood body to your boyhood body to your youthful body, your consciousness continues. Similarly, your consciousness will carry you into another body, and that transmigration from one body to another is called death. When your old body cannot be maintained anymore, the consciousness has to be transferred to a new body. When your garment is too old, it has to be changed. Similarly. when the material body is too old to carry on, your consciousness is transferred to another body and you begin another life. This is the law of nature.

Awake to what?

To All That Is.

Realization of connectedness, oneness and aware of your own godliness.

From this, can't we just say that consciousness is the presence of a soul in matter?

And from this inferrence we can say there are basically 2 kinds of matter in the universe. Living Force and Non-living force.

Does anyone disagree?

Consciousness is the presence of thought of consciousness in you. Matter is another thought this time about matter and space.

Pure consciousness is "beyond" time and space.

What do you mean only atman is brahman, not you?

Atman means soul and brahman is spirit.

Realizing "I am Brahman" means engagement in spiritual activity because we are spirit, and our activities are exhibited even though we are contaminated by matter. To become Brahman does not mean to become void but to establish ourselves in the superior nature, which means superior energy and superior activities. To become Brahman means to be completely engaged in rendering devotional service to the Lord.

"I am" is never brahman.

You do not quote shastra and make illogical arguments.

The Jiva atman or living entity is also Brahman, or spirit. Is the spirit soul not capable of I Am?

Though the jiva permeates his body as impersonal consciousness, he is always a person.
