Meteor Shower Spawned by Halley's Comet Peaks Friday
Thread: Meteor Shower Spawned by Halley's Comet Peaks Friday

Phoenix 2012 Forum Administrator

It has been 25 years since Halley's Comet last passed through the inner solar system, but an annual meteor shower keeps the icy wanderer's legacy on Earth alive this week.

Halley's Comet takes roughly 75 years to circle the sun, but if you're 30 years old or younger, you either have little or no memory of this famous cosmic vagabond's 1986 trip by Earth. And your next chance will come in the summer of 2061.

But if you don’t want to wait until 2061, you might want to step outside before sunrise during these next few mornings and try to catch a view of some "cosmic litter" that has been left behind in space by Halley's comet — a summer display of "shooting stars."....

Giant asteroid to hurtle past Earth

Thread: Giant asteroid to hurtle past Earth

Voo Doo Doll Maker! / Australia

An asteroid with a diameter of 400m will make its closest approach to Earth later this year.

Known as YU55, the asteroid would fly within the moon's orbit narrowly missing Earth, according to reports.

"The space rock will hurtle past our planet at a distance of just 201,700 miles (324,600km) during its closest approach on November 8," The Daily Mail has reported.

"That is closer to Earth than the moon, which orbits 238,857 miles (384,400km) away on average.

"With a width of some 400m and weighing 55 million tons, YU55 will be the largest object to ever approach Earth."

But US space agency NASA said there was no cause for concern.

"Although classified as a potentially hazardous object, 2005 YU55 poses no threat of an Earth collision over at least the next 100 years," NASA said.

"However, this will be the closest approach to date by an object this large that we know about in advance and an event of this type will not happen again until 2028."

[MYSTERY:]Mystery Cosmic Rays Zapping South Pole[YOU SHOULD KNOW]

Thread: [MYSTERY:]Mystery Cosmic Rays Zapping South Pole[YOU SHOULD KNOW]

PhotonTransporterBeam / India

Cosmic rays zapping the Earth over the South Pole appear to be coming from particular locations, rather than being distributed uniformly across the sky. Cosmic ray "hotspots" have also been seen in the northern skies too, yet there is no source close enough to produce this strange pattern.
"We don't know where they are coming from," says Stefan Westerhoff of the University of Wisconsin, who used the IceCube neutrino observatory at the South Pole with a team of colleagues to create the most comprehensive map to date of the arrival direction of cosmic rays in the southern skies.

IceCube detects muons produced by neutrinos striking ice, but it also detects muons created by cosmic rays hitting Earth's atmosphere. These cosmic ray muons can be used to figure out the direction of the original cosmic ray particle.

Between May 2009 and May 2010, IceCube has detected 32 billion cosmic-ray muons, with a median energy of about 20 teraelectronvolts (TeV). These muons revealed, with extremely high statistical significance, a southern sky with some regions of excess cosmic rays ("hotspots") and others with a deficit of cosmic rays ("cold" spots).

NASA CONFIRMS!!! Space Time Vortex DOES EXIST Around Earth

Thread: NASA CONFIRMS!!! Space Time Vortex DOES EXIST Around Earth

40Head / United States

" Einstein was right again. There is a space-time vortex around Earth, and its shape precisely matches the predictions of Einstein's theory of gravity.

Researchers confirmed these points at a press conference today at NASA headquarters where they announced the long-awaited results of Gravity Probe B (GP-B).

"The space-time around Earth appears to be distorted just as general relativity predicts," says Stanford University physicist Francis Everitt, principal investigator of the Gravity Probe B mission."

These are notes I took during Voice Chat in the Lobby when SHR stopped in. He sent me a PM and said when he has the time, he will stop in during Rapid Fire to give us an update. That's very thoughtful of him, and I know you all will appreciate it as much as I do.

GLP Observatory Project: The Domes Are Up...

^TrInItY^

[link to www.godlikeproductions.com]

All the big tubes are up and landed. It is fully up and in place. It's awesome man. So far it has really been good. There is nothing we haven't been able to overcome. The dome is like the biggest on earth. The small domes are pretty much commercially available. The big one is proto-type. Motors - asap. Full automation/ motors issue. Rotomoto plastic dome. The larger dome is the only one of it's kind at the time when we bought it. (sold it in Sept. but waiting for the weather to break/ trade show coming up. Talked the dude into selling the one he had/ said he had to beat him into doing the deal) What are gonna be the capability of the small one - guy told him there were less than 20 of them on earth that was in 2008. Probably about 12 on earth, and maybe far less than that. Get this, we got the only one in stock on earth.

We have tapped that guy when it comes to the instructions/ hands on/ nut n bolts kinda thing. We have a wireless bridge. We're gonna use solar panels to run the main power, we some smaller ones to charge the motors on the doors, to rotate on the doom. We need to have that power supply to charge the battery to open the doom door. We are really at the root level automation...

Backyard program that we are thinking of throwing out and putting our own in. Thinking of coming up with our own system/ streamline the set up. We will see a lot of that in the future.

We have a magazine that loads different filters that take a series of photos depending on how many layers. We will have automated magazine. With this filter set up: Red, Green, Blue, Illuminance filters.

The Illuminant filter isn't a nebula filter / 5 one minute exposure @ five each, then stack a layer of them. Long exposure, deep light saturation.

SBI G System it's like a $7000 system. We got a great deal.

This is how these astro-photographer's do this. It takes a really long time to / SHR1 50 seconds in 3 minutes, SHR 2, SHR 3 all different timing of processing and be able to image these deep galaxy. You'll be able to do all these really great photos. So that everyone can do it. Good 5 minutes, Better 10 minutes, Best 15 minutes, Excellent 20 minutes.

Three clusters of three sets of scopes, and the medium scope, and for deep sky the big one.
Will have a Chat.
Will have to reserve 15 minutes of time.
You can reserve 15 minutes each for three days in a row to complete a project. We will have different time allotted for different projects.

Note: My typing isn't as fast as he was talking, I missed so much, but this is a good idea of some of the wonderful things they are doing. I hope I didn't get anything wrong, just take it with a grain, ok?

METEORS FROM HALLEY'S COMET
: Today, May 6th, Earth is passing through a stream of dusty debris from Halley's Comet, source of the annual eta Aquarid meteor shower. It's a mild but beautiful display best seen during the dark hours before sunrise. After the sun comes up, try listening for eta Aquarid echoes on Spaceweather.com's live meteor radar.

TWILIGHT BLASTERS: As northern summer approaches, nights around the Arctic Circle are growing brighter. Soon, the midnight sun will banish auroras altogether--but not yet. On May 4th in the Tombstone Territorial Park of Yukon, Canada, photographer Yuichi Takasaka witnessed a vivid green ribbon cutting through the twilight:

...

"The sun was only 9o below the horizon," says Takasaka. "Nevertheless, we could see the auroras. Between 1 o'clock and 3 o'clock in the morning, I shot more than a thousand images, of which these nine were best."

The weekend outlook for more Northern Lights is not promising. Solar activity is low and a waxing Moon is about to add to the late-night glare. Fortunately, we still have the South Pole.

Near Earth Asteroids

Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs) are space rocks larger than approximately 100m that can come closer to Earth than 0.05 AU. None of the known PHAs is on a collision course with our planet, although astronomers are finding new ones all the time.
