Contrails and Aviation-induced Cirrus Clouds

"Our winters have not been as dramatically cold in recent years as they have been historically," Travis said. "Some of what has been attributed to global warming may be due to contrails that throw down a blanket of clouds to warm the nights."

Reducing the extremes of day and night temperatures could have a subtle impact on ecosystems, Travis said. It may, for instance, increase insect populations that thrive better in moderate temperatures.

Some crops could also be affected. Cranberries and citrus orchards need a certain number of cold nights and warm days to ripen properly, Travis said.

Travis said he has mixed feelings about contrails. On the one hand they have been a prime focus of his research interest for the last 10 years. On the other hand they almost spoiled a recent vacation in the Pacific Northwest.

"There were so many contrails in the sky we weren't having any nice days," he said. "The contrails were making the days kind of gloomy and overcast. There aren't as many sunny days as we had when we were kids."

So does Travis, who feels the fact that we can measure a change of any sort should be cause for concern. Even a slight alteration of the daily temperature range, for instance, can have repercussions, he says. "To you and I, that may seem like a nice comfortable-sounding scenario—the days are not as hot, the nights are not as cold—but for natural ecosystems, this could be a real problem. For one thing, you need to have extreme temperatures to weed out the weaker species—it's classic Darwinism."
For this reason, Travis believes we shouldn't sit by and wait to see what happens with contrails. "Anytime we can see an effect from something artificial like that, I think we want to try to do something about it," he says. The British government, for one, may be about to. It's considering requiring planes to fly at lower altitudes over Great Britain in hopes of promoting fewer contrails.
I too will be looking at contrails with a new eye—a jaundiced one. Though I will admit that if they were black as soot, it would be a lot easier.

Contrails alter temperature the same way that natural high clouds do. During the day, the layer of ice crystals shields the ground from some of the sun's energy. At night, the layer of ice crystals prevents some of Earth's heat from dissipating into the vacuum. Without the contrails, the daytime temperature would be slightly higher and the nighttime temperature would be slightly lower, creating the increased range between lowest and highest temperatures.

Using satellite observations of spreading contrails as a guide, Burkhardt built a model that simulated how they form, spread out and dissipate. Then she embedded it in a global climate model and watched what happened. She found that contrail cirrus ended up covering 0.6 per cent of Earth's surface – an area nine times as great as that covered by line contrails.

Burkhardt then used this figure to produce a more accurate estimate of the total energy trapped by contrails. Her calculations suggest a global figure of 31 mW/m2 – higher than that attributable to aviation CO2.


There is a catch, though. "[The measurement] says nothing about what will happen tomorrow," says David Lee of Manchester Metropolitan University in the UK. While a contrail lasts a day, the CO2 released from a plane lingers in the atmosphere for hundreds of years. For example, while contrails – and their warming potential – disappeared from European skies last April when an Icelandic volcanic ash cloud grounded flights, atmospheric CO2 continued to warm the world.

The flip side is that cutting contrails would make an immediate difference to atmospheric warming, whereas emissions cuts take years to have an effect, says Robert Noland of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Trade-offs between Emission Sources

Abstract – Aviation operations affect the climate in several
ways. Carbon dioxide, water vapor and other greenhouse
gasses are unavoidable by-product of the combustion of
fossil fuel. There are indications that persistent contrails
can lead to adverse climate change, although the complete
effect on climate forcing is still uncertain. A flight
trajectory optimization algorithm with fuel and contrails
models, which develops alternative flight paths, provides
policy makers the necessary data to make trade-offs
between persistent contrails mitigation and aircraft fuel
consumption. This study develops an algorithm that
calculates wind-optimal trajectories for cruising aircraft
while reducing the amount of time spent in regions of
airspace prone to persistent contrails formation. The
optimal trajectories are developed by solving a non-linear
optimal control problem with path constraints. The
regions of airspace favorable to persistent contrails
formation are modeled as penalty areas that aircraft
should avoid. The trade-off between persistent contrails
formation and additional fuel consumption is investigated
for 12 city-pairs in the continental United States. The
avoidance of contrails using only horizontal maneuvers
results in a small reduction of contrails with increasing
fuel consumption. When both horizontal maneuvers and
altitude are optimized, a 2% increase in total fuel
consumption can reduce the total travel times through
contrail regions by more than 70%. Allowing further
increase in fuel consumption does not seem to result in
proportionate reduction in contrail travel times. This
trend is maintained even in the presence of uncertainties
in the contrail formation regions such as uncertainties in
relative humidity values computed by weather forecast
models.

Over the span of a few hours or more, the contrail loses its definition and becomes a wispy cirrus cloud. But if the atmosphere is very moist, the line shape can exist for days, said Ulrike Burkhardt, a researcher at the Institute for Atmospheric Physics at the German Aerospace Center. She and colleague Bernd Kärcher calculated contrails' effect on climate.

"Assuming a steady growth of air traffic, then contrails would remain for some time the most important aviation-related warming. If, on the other hand, aviation volume is decreasing, then carbon dioxide would become more important relative to contrail cirrus," Burkhardt wrote in an email to LiveScience.

Hmmmm . . . I noticed these measurements are all ground measurements . . . Obviously showing EPA is doing a fine job in ground source abatement . . . Wonder what percentage of the decrease was due to all that additional air traffic added during the same years . . . Spewing out more sulfur compounds than ever before . . . Subtract low altitude for high altitude injection of sulfur I think . . .

A recent increase in the abundance of particles high in the atmosphere has offset about a third of the current climate warming influence of carbon dioxide (CO2) change during the past decade, according to a new study led by NOAA and published today in the online edition of Science

“Stratospheric aerosol increased surprisingly rapidly in that time, almost doubling during the decade,” Daniel said. “The increase in aerosols since 2000 implies a cooling effect of about 0.1 watts per square meter – enough to offset some of the 0.28 watts per square meter warming effect from the carbon dioxide increase during that same period.”
Sources of aerosols reach the stratosphere from above and below as shown in the graph. Sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbonyl sulfide (OCS), and dimethyl sulfide(DMS) are the dominant surface emissions which contribute to aerosol formation.

My NOTE: There is no evidence the sulfur compounds are all from surface emissions . . . why . . . they were measured in or near the stratosphere . . .

More particulate in the stratosphere than can be explained = (unknown source) + declining ground sources - major volcanic eruptions

It was common practice for students and doctors to go to the delivery wards just after completing autopsies for research or classroom studies.  Sanitary conditions were primitive, for this was before germ theory was developed.  Often, physicians did not wash their hands between autopsy and delivery.  As a result, they were carrying an invisible particle of infection on their hands from the cadavers to the mothers.  In other words, the doctors were inadvertently introducing into the mother’s body the infection that would kill her.  This would also explain the discrepancy between the two divisions:  midwives did not do autopsies.

Semmelweis ordered the doctors and students in his division to adopt a hand-washing technique employing a chlorine solution before they delivered any baby.  The change had an immediate impact.  In 1848, the first full year of hand-washing techniques were applied; and deaths fell dramatically, moving in line with rates from the other division and rates reported for home births.  The mortality rate after hand washing dropped from 1 in 10 to 1 in 100.

While this was a major break-through, do you think the medical world and work immediately celebrated?  No.  In fact, Semmelweis was not reappointed to his position the next year.   Even worse, it was so divisive that his division discontinued the hand-washing practice after he was not reappointed, and the mortality rate among mothers returned to their much-higher rates.  It would be almost 20 years before it was shown how Semmelweis’ “invisible cadaver particles”—caused putrefaction in dead bodies and hospitals began to adapt the practical strategies of minimizing infection.
