NOW INCREASED DANGER OF VENOMOUS SNAKES!! Thanks OP. Pretty sad when you have to go OUTSIDE the US, to get news on what's happening INSIDE the US. Remember a year or two ago, when Fema, was forcing home owners to either buy flood insurance or increase their coverage, even if they didn't live in a flood plane or they lived in a 500 year one? Tell me they didn't know something like this was coming. thewatcher |

Yeah it hit the news here this morning, This is the first time they have shown it, So if it wasn't for the internet i would know nothing about any flooding, Well until now that is. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 983390Like much of the west side of the river at Memphis (Arkansas side), much of Louisiana is sits very low at the water....and may well be inundated.... Here's a quote from one of the articles I linked to above: "Downriver in Louisiana, officials warned residents that even if a key spillway northwest of Baton Rouge were to be opened, residents could expect water 5 to 25 feet (1.5 to 7.5 meters) deep over parts of seven parishes. Some of Louisiana's most valuable farmland is expected to be inundated" 25 feet!!!!! |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 983390I started a thread on it for the Memphis area impact back on 4/28. Lots of great articles in there. Started it mainly as a little "archive" since this particular flood is really historical for us - I will most likely never see anything like it again in my lifetime. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 983390In the US, we've searched national news for a week for better information and pictures of the extent of the flooding and found very little. Only coverage that has been shown in flooded empty parking lots, ball fields and others areas normally left unbuilt because the area is a flood plain. Thanks for posting the video from England. |

NOW INCREASED DANGER OF VENOMOUS SNAKES!! As a lifetime Memphian (who currently resides south of the city in North Mississippi), this video (while the footage is real) leads people to believe that the city is inundated. It's not. The outlying areas are inundated (i.e., the Arkansas side, the Delta region in north Mississippi, areas on the north side and east side of Memphis due to tributary flooding and segments in South Memphis, and near the airport due to the Nonconnah flooding) - I'd guess....maybe 30%? Of course, that's HUGE! Not trying to discount it at all. Never seen anything like it and never will probably in my life. But, it's not like the whole city is under water. Most of the city sits HIGH above the river. Still, it's been an amazing thing to watch. I have about 100 or so pics I've taken over the past week - and this weekend spent 2 days down on the riverfront (well, close to the riverfront - riverside drive is closed because, well, it's under water). The impact economically is huge - but folks should remember this isn't just affecting Memphis - I'd say parts Arkansas and parts of North Mississippi are really inundated.... And, p.s. - I've been documenting it here on GLP since the 28th. Been somewhat surprised that hadn't garnered more interest actually. I will also note that Louisiana is really bracing for this. We may see an even worse situation creep up there in the next few weeks as that land sits much lower..... |

The Delta region in North Mississippi is actually some of the richest farmland in the entire world - all thanks to the mighty Mississippi and the mineral rich flooding that happens from time to time in this area. |

NOW INCREASED DANGER OF VENOMOUS SNAKES!! And the corps is getting ready to open Morganza Spillway this week. This spillway flows along the Atchafalaya (probably butchered the spelling) River and into Bayou Teche area which is 125 miles long. This is the east side, and a significant chunk of the Cajun/ and French Black cultures communies- a very precious and unique culture that has managed to resurge and preserve it's integrity even while assimilating with mainstream America.. These are different than the creole culture of New Orleans. Music, food, nature, and cultural uniqueness have increasingly drawn tourists to the area and helped keep it alive since the 90's. The people have a hard existence, government almost extinguished its unique language (different than modern French) beginning in the 30's, but the Cajun music and culture revival in the latter 20th century helped save the culture and language and re-establish a pride that may have been disappearing in the youth. Genocide is not new this this people going back centuries, and that is how they ended up in the lowlands of Louisiana. The last 15 years have seen a strengthening as the culture and people have come to be more appreciated. Information seems to be more lacking and unforthcoming than in Missouri. I looked at the map, the map that supposedly was unavailable to the governor last week, and therefore the communities, and most of the area along the river, which is where a lot of the towns are, is supposed to be under 15-25 feet of water. Chemical contamination and related health problems are already a major problem from petro chemicals, agriculture, and now the oil spill, although I do not hear complaints about them. The oyster beds have not recovered from the spill, and I read the silt and chemicals coming down will kill the oysters. Seafood was a major livelihood and survival staple. Of course the entire ecology, wildlife will be gone too in the inundated areas. Communities are being advised to voluntarily evacuate and take all possessions, animals, (crops get left),insurance papers, etc. These people will not have homes to come back to. Ever try to pack your entire life while you are working at a job you can't afford to be fired from, or while one of the adults is working offshore or out of state- which is normal. These are not SUV, motor home resources. How much can you get into one vehicle? Forget about livestock, where do pets stay while you live in a shelter indefinitely? Reading Lafeyette news, they started out saying it would be inevitable. Also giving the impression that after leaving the water in 2-3 weeks, then it would flow out after awhile. They have not told them as far as was printed, that it would take 45-60 days IF there was no rain (during hurricane season)) as they did in missouri AFTER the release levees were blasted to allow the water to drain back into Mississippi. The corps is saying it will flood anyway- and it is strting to flood. However, a natural flow does not do the same damages as a release. The north end is estimated to be up to 35 feet under and I suspect that is farmland. from the Advertiser- lafeyette online news source: "Downriver in Louisiana, officials warned residents that even if a key spillway northwest of Baton Rouge were to be opened, residents could expect water 5 to 25 feet deep over parts of seven parishes. Some of Louisiana's most valuable farmland is expected to be inundated." The flood pdf can be found online. News sources I have found are Lafeyette news, and I will check New Iberia I would hunt them, but have got to get to town |
