Re: U.S.Postal Service reports BILLIONS in LOSSES!!! GOING UNDER!!!
JENNIFER C. KERR, Associated Press – 41 mins ago

WASHINGTON – The Postal Service is continuing to hemorrhage money, reporting a loss Tuesday of more than $2 billion over the first three months of the year and warning it could be forced to default on federal payments.

Such a default would not interrupt mail service to millions of Americans, but it could further hobble an agency struggling with a sharp decline in mail because of the Internet and a tough economy.

The agency says the $2.2 billion loss covers Jan. 1 to March 31, 2011 — sharply higher than the net loss of $1.6 billion for the same period last year. The post office also said it will have reached its borrowing limit, set by Congress, of $15 billion by the end of the fiscal year.

Re: U.S.Postal Service reports BILLIONS in LOSSES!!! GOING UNDER!!!
this post is a big ole pile of BS!
For a site against govt.,conspiracy... YOU should already know what they are trying to pull!

first lets start with this. They want to show loss, because they want to loose saturdays, which in return how many 10,000's of people will get screwed! AND 10,000's of people will loose there jobs!!
They are just like every other business anymore...Out for number one! The bottom line!!! They don't give a Crap about anything else or anyone else.

As for loss, thats just numbers, refined and made to look good in THEIR favor! (dumb ass)

AND, What about raising postage prices??? (how many times now?)

Truth is, mail volume is UP UP UP UP!!!
Why don't you think they didn't want to do a mail count this last spring??

On top of that, if they are loosing millions, why did they spend millions in commercials and B.S, trying to convince the people loosing Saturday mail is a good thing??

WAKE UP PEOPLE! Use some freaking common sense!

Maybe they should stop processing and delivering all of those 500 pounds of junk mail flyers and adverts that get sent to my box every month.

Seriously, and lower their prices too, cheaper to send fed ex these days FFS.

Sent a package USPS two weeks ago and it was $4.60.

Same size package and weight last weekend, damn thing cost $5.75!

In two weeks, they raised the price that much? WTF where do they think our money comes from...magic? Hell no.

Same box, same size same weight a year ago was $3.45

Fuck em I'm just going to ship fed ex from now on and get better, faster, safer shipping and pay a small amount more.

As someone who ships out 1200-1400 packages a week, let me tell you that USPS is the lowest cost carrier to ship packages to residential addresses.

Their new Priority Regional Rate boxes are great... ship up to 15 pounds as long as it will fit in box. Price is 4-8 dollars cheaper than UPS to residential addresses.

And anything less that 1 pound, no one can touch USPS.

NOT A SHILL, JUST A SHIPPER :)
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1339891

I only ship about 50-100 per week and am in Canada. Our postal service is the cheapest method of shipping BUT to ship a package to the US, eg. CA. It will cost me $13+ But to ship from US to here is about $5 or less.

The US postal service is a political hot potato that no one wants to touch, so it keeps losing money.

Mail volume was down 3.1% from same quarter last year, that is a HUGE number. It means less business' are sending out direct mail pieces. Online ads have taken a portion, but not enough to contribute to that steep decline.

well as a former mail carrier Its the damn postal services fault.

Junk mail only cost 5 to 15 cents to mail and its really a pain in the ass to mail because you have tones of them to mail to everymail box and its was crazy.

If they would charge the junk mail 44 cents then that would help there profit.

& now the USPS is also delevering UPS and Fedex packages as well BULL SHIT cause as a carrier i wasn't getting paid extra for that. So were was that money going to?

I hope the USPS goes down I hate it with a passion.

The U.S. Postal Service needs to die.

It's top heavy with incompetent, lazy, and rude management.

The letter carriers and clerks are rude as hell and as far as customers service goes, it sucks and that's putting the matter mildly.

The Postal Service is an old horse that has outlived it's usefulness. Send the old horse to McDonalds or the glue factory.

It's because they are all unionized! These people don't have to have a degree and start out making $19.50/hour -- WTF???!!! I know many college grads who couldn't find a job starting out making that much and they had much greater responsibilities.

Re: U.S.Postal Service reports BILLIONS in LOSSES!!! GOING UNDER!!!
Greetings:

Now This Might Take Some Doing ... But Here Is An Idea ... Which Would Most Definitely ... Save For All ... In Fuel Costs ... For Those That Deliver Mail/Packages !!

The Thought/Idea ... Is To Reorient The Sorting Places/Hubs ... To Correspond With The Routes ... In A One Way Direction For Delivery !! ... As It Is Of That Moment ... Items For Delivery ... Go Way Out Of The Way ... To The Nearest Hub/Sorting Area ... For The Kind/Type Of Package ... Oftentimes Going Right By Or Around The City ... In Which The End Delivery Address Is Located !! ... Then It Is A Hop To The Next Hub/Sorting Area ... Finally Ending Up ... At The Delivery Location !! ... Fuel Spent/Wasted On Backtracking ... And Days Wasted/Spent ... In Which The Items Could Have Already Been There !!

It Was Taught In Terrestrial School ... That The Closest Distance Between 2 Points ... Is A Straight Line !! ... Well ... Ones Need To Apply "Crow Think" ... As The Crow Flies !! ... To Head Direct ... Of Which Depending On Where The Shipper Is ... & Final Location ... Things Are Presorted & Handled ... From One Point To The Other Point ... Not Having To Divert Off Direct Directional Course !!

For Example ... One Has An Item Sent From St. Louis Missouri ... To Boston, Massachusetts ... The Item Proceeds Eastward (Not To The North, South, West) ... In Direct Course ... To Boston, Massachusetts ... Perhaps Or Perhaps Not ... Stopping At Sorting/Distribution Hubs Along The Way !! ... Main Hubs Would Handle Mails/Packages Heading In Specific Directions ... Going In Those Directions To The Delivery Address ... Not Backtracking !!

Farewell For Now !!

I havnt read through this entire thread so this may have been mentioned, if so, I apologize but I dont have the time to read all 5 pages this morning since some of us still (thankfully) have jobs to go to (just not good jobs anymore)

The USPS needs to go. Period. NOT ONLY do they charge money via stamps and shipping BUT are given tax money directly as well for operation costs. In other words , that stamp may be "only" 42 cents (whatever- I dont mail things) but in reality it is much more since it is essentially subsidized through our taxes.

Last I heard we (the taxpayer) pay enough in taxes (not stamps and postage fees) to literally PAY FOR THE INTERNET FOR EVERY FAMILY IN AMERICA... SO, just in taxes given to pay for these awesome pensions and benefits of postal carriers we could all have FREE INTERNET and get rid of the damn post office by moving everything to electronic.

Mopst people I know do not use the mail system anyhow- Its all for junk mail and wastes a huge amount of gas and resources.

If the USPS eliminated delivering all this CRAP, JUNK, SHIT, think of all the gas they would save. Think of all the hours of labor saved, sorting, delivering, etc.

They are losing billions becuase they are delivering CRAP THAT NOBODY EVEN FUCKING WANTS!

Wrong. It would make more sense for them to just charge more for the junk mail that nobody wants anyway. The Advertisers would stop sending it or pay more to spam you.

Oddly enough this is the only thing keeping the USPS alive right now... Without the junk mail there would be hardly anything sent anymore- Therefore our tax money is really subsidizing junk mail- The senders are also getting a "bulk shipping deal" and paying far less than you or I would to send a letter.

I work for Vistion (Ford) and make 12.85/hr with no health care and max pay of 15/hr.
Three years ago I was a Confined Space Rescue Tech who subcontracted to places like Ford, GM, National Steel etc. and was making nearly twice what I make now once benefits are included.

I am blessed to make what I do BUT when your mortgage and bills are set to making twice that amount I am broke as hell.

I quit selling on ebay. So much money going to shipping and people wanted you to give them free shipping. Couldn't afford it.

Plus, I would end up owing ebay 150 + dollars at the end of each month plus 70 + month for paypal and even more than that went to the post office.

I worked my butt off aquiring, photographing, listing, packing, shipping and customer service just to give most of it away. Sucks.

It's even worse now. International buyers can get an actual american address (rent) and have buy all the goods with free shipping within America and then have all their goods boxed up and sent in one package for a really good price.

So I guess that's another u.s post screwed themselves by being too expensive.
It's cheaper to buy from american stores with the strong dollar than to shop on ebay.

Letter carrier here.

Yeah, I'm just as tired delivering that fuckin bullshit junk mail to you as you are receiving it. You think I like carrying that extra weight on my shoulder? Fuck you! I get home with my spine bent all outta shape. And you fuckers complain like it's so hard to walk over and just toss that shit in the trash. Oh you poor baby! And most of you mindless monkeys complaining are just repeating what you've heard others say over the years like a bunch of mynah birds. You don't really know the fuck why but it sounds good so you jump on the bandwagon and start your mindless yappin. And so the shit just perpetuates. You know what I sometime really feel like doing with all this fucking shit I have to deliver to you - that you are responsible for? Yes, YOU!!?? I'd like to grap you by the neck and just ram all that shit up your ass.

Ok, I feel better now.

LOL, You are doing a great job, so hang in there. I have a lot of respect for those at the tip of the spear so to speak, who deliver the mail.

There are to many who do not touch mail who do have to go, that is the real problem in any bloated bureaucracy.

I am retired, and carry part time rural mail.

One of the funniest things, and there are many that I've seen, was a customer who got something from a porn site in the mail, and scratched all over it that it was unsolicited, and to return. Like the household didn't have any pervs inside, right, LOL.

Bullshit, is what I wanted to tell her/him. Either the husband was on the internet surfing porn, or a little fat offspring was inside spooning the computer monitor.

All "junk" is a product of the serfs, and their consumerism. Exception, is the box holders. But even those can be removed if they wanted to really remove them.

I know the carriers(rural) work their asses off, and, are very good at what they do, really surprised me, and I do deliver in the snow belt, so that is altogether another issue.

If all the Carriers quit today, it would shut down the mail. They are not irreplaceable, but to think someone can just come in and do the job tomorrow is ignorance.

If you consumers really want to remove yourselves from the beast(I suspect you really don't though, you are what you are, a consumer, living on credit, or .gub assistance), go here:

Unsolicited Mail, Telemarketing and Email: Where to Go to “Just Say No”

Tired of having your mailbox crammed with unsolicited mail, including preapproved credit card applications? Fed up with getting telemarketing calls just as you're sitting down to dinner? Fuming that your email inbox is chock-full of unsolicited advertising? The good news is that you can cut down on the number of unsolicited mailings, calls, and emails you receive by learning where to go to "just say no."
Consumer Reporting Companies

If you decide that you don't want to receive prescreened offers of credit and insurance, you have two choices: You can opt out of receiving them for five years or opt out of receiving them permanently.

To opt out for five years: Call toll-free 1-888-5-OPT-OUT (1-888-567-8688) or visit www.optoutprescreen.com. The phone number and website are operated by the major consumer reporting companies.

To opt out permanently: You may begin the permanent Opt-Out process online at www.optoutprescreeen.com. To complete your request, you must return the signed Permanent Opt-Out Election form, which will be provided after you initiate your online request.

When you call or visit the website, you'll be asked to provide certain personal information, including your home telephone number, name, Social Security number, and date of birth. The information you provide is confidential and will be used only to process your request to opt out.

If you don't have access to the Internet, you may send a written request to permanently opt out to each of the major consumer reporting companies. Make sure your request includes your home telephone number, name, Social Security number, and date of birth.

Telemarketing

The federal government's National Do Not Call Registry is a free, easy way to reduce the telemarketing calls you get at home. To register your phone number or to get information about the registry, visit www.donotcall.gov, or call 1-888-382-1222 from the phone number you want to register. You will get fewer telemarketing calls within 31 days of registering your number. Telephone numbers on the registry will only be removed when they are disconnected and reassigned, or when you choose to remove a number from the registry.
Mail

The Direct Marketing Association's (DMA) Mail Preference Service (MPS) lets you opt out of receiving unsolicited commercial mail from many national companies for five years. When you register with this service, your name will be put on a "delete" file and made available to direct-mail marketers and organizations. This will reduce most of your unsolicited mail. However, your registration will not stop mailings from organizations that do not use the DMA's Mail Preference Service. To register with DMA's Mail Preference Service, go to www.dmachoice.org, or mail your request with a $1 processing fee to:

WASHINGTON – The Postal Service is continuing to hemorrhage money, reporting a loss Tuesday of more than $2 billion over the first three months of the year and warning it could be forced to default on federal payments.

Such a default would not interrupt mail service to millions of Americans, but it could further hobble an agency struggling with a sharp decline in mail because of the Internet and a tough economy.

The agency says the $2.2 billion loss covers Jan. 1 to March 31, 2011 — sharply higher than the net loss of $1.6 billion for the same period last year. The post office also said it will have reached its borrowing limit, set by Congress, of $15 billion by the end of the fiscal year.

maybe you guys should shut the fuck up until you know a thing or two about the USPS. they were forced to restructure in 2006 by the US Congress to not only have to pre-pay huge amounts of retirement benefits, but to have to stay tie their price increates to the CPI, which is obviously a bullshit number that just makes them lose even more money.

also, they MAKE money on junk mail. they barely have to look at a single piece of junk mail before it is in the mail carrier's hands. i'm not saying junk mail is cool, but you guys are fucking morons.
