It's a good idea. I'd steer clear of the canned foods. They go bad fast.

Rice and beans because they are a complete protein when eaten together. Lots of pasta and noodles. Canned spaghetti sauce, but it only has a couple of yrs shelf life
.
A large can or more of Olive oil- you can always mix pasta with olive oil and season it with a lot of different spices. Cooking oil. Lots of spices and seasonings. Canned tomatoes and tomato paste. Oats, flour (freeze for a couple of wks. to keep from getting weevils in it- same goes for anything that might get buggy) sugar, baking powder, baking soda, yeast, salt.

Corn bread mix (store the boxes in metal containers) evaporated milk or powdered milk, yeast, gravy mixes.
You can to to thrift stores to pick up metal containers and cookie tins, canisters, etc. for cheap, to store food in. Make sure they seal tightly. Or you can buy large food grade plastic pails with lids for large storage.

Baking mixes and pancake mix and syrup. Bottled juices. Canned meats. Snacks, cookies and candies because you might really miss them. Dried fruits and nuts. Ramen noodles. Canned soups will last a year, so rotate any canned goods. Condiments. Peanut butter and jelly. Egg substitute or dried eggs to use as ingredients.

Get some iron cookware, like a dutch oven and a skillet that you can cook with on a barbeque or in your fireplace.
Have lots and lots of water. You can fill old soda bottle with tap water and put one drop of bleach in. Or buy one of those really big water storage containers at Walmart for like $7.00.

Don't forget to stock up on b-b-que charcoal and lighter or get a metal firestarter and keep boxes of matches in metal containers so they don't get wet.

Store plenty of bleach and bottles of hydrogen peroxide which can be used for disinfecting cuts, a mouthwash, you can even clean house with hydrogen peroxide.

If you must. You want something cheap and good to compost so you don't have to eat it. Don't be one of those people who live on canned/dried/frozen stuff 24/7.

Don't forget some parmesan cheese, other dried cheese, sundried tomatoes and lemon juice to use on all the pasta. Plus spices like chives, oregano, basil, garlic powder, dried onions, lemon-pepper seasoning etc. to cook with.

Also, another tip which I read on glp is you can measure out flour by the cup and store in zip lock bags inside a large popcorn tin.

And you might as well stock up on some toiletries, soap, and over the counter meds while you're at it. And lots and lots of toilet paper.

You can add dehydrated fruits and veggies, nuts, jars of peanut butter, canned soups, stews, etc. to the stocks. I think it's good to have a variety of foods so you can cook from scratch or just heat up (like canned soups), depending on the situation you might be in.

It's also important to think ahead about how to heat and cook without electricity.

Just stockpile things you normally eat. Start with 3 days worth of food, then start working towards 3 weeks.

Water is your #1 priority.

The LDS Church (famously known for their members being instructed to have 2 years of supplies on hand) has a great website that can help you get started: [link to www.lds.org (secure)]

Good luck!
